Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Hit People Without Slaps on the Face, and Swear Without Exposing Them!
The thief Antonio had apprehended was named Louis.
The records indicated that Louis was a notorious thief, with a criminal history spanning several states and a record of entering prison three times. Each time he came out, his methods became more sophisticated. He had developed significant counter-surveillance skills and was extremely cunning.
When Antonio caught Louis, the latter initially panicked but soon tried to manipulate the crowd by shouting for help, attempting to pressure Antonio into releasing him.
Unfortunately for Louis, Antonio was as steady as a mountain. With his imposing stature, unwavering demeanor, and crisp police uniform, nobody dared interfere.
Louis then tried to stir public opinion in his favor, but Antonio simply found the stolen items on him and insisted he cooperate with the investigation.
Claim it's your phone? Fine. Unlock it with your face or fingerprint.
That wallet is yours? Interesting. Your ID says you're a woman. If you want to stick to your story about returning from Thailand, then come with us to the station and prove it.
Faced with undeniable evidence, Louis confessed on the spot. He began crying bitterly, begging for mercy, but Antonio wasn't swayed.
"Stealing from others means being ready to face the consequences. You've been to prison three times. Are you joking about being a career thief? Let's go!"
Antonio had caught Louis by first identifying him through the unusual scent emanating from him. After getting closer, Antonio used his advanced identification skills to confirm Louis's identity as a thief.
And just like that, it was over.
"Is he really… a thief?"
When John saw Antonio return, his earlier anger vanished as he stared at the evidence in disbelief.
Good grief—Antonio had the stolen goods right there!
Still, John struggled to process it. He recalled how Sam had just told him about Antonio's incredible abilities as an officer, stories he had dismissed as exaggerations.
Now, faced with the evidence, he began to doubt his skepticism. Was Antonio really that good at catching criminals?
"How did you do it?" John finally asked, genuinely curious.
Antonio smiled modestly. "It's just a small trick, Officer John. Nothing special. Now, where were you earlier? Something about Senior Officer Max?"
John felt his face heat up in embarrassment. He had been about to boast about his protégé, Max, who had just caught his first thief after a month on the force and received praise from their captain.
But now? Max's accomplishment seemed trivial in comparison.
John forced a smile and said, "Oh, it's nothing. Just an earlier misunderstanding. By the way, Antonio, how did you know there was a thief in the crowd, and how were you so sure it was Louis?"
Antonio scratched his head awkwardly. "I'm not great at bragging about myself," he admitted.
Fortunately, Sam stepped in. A proud mentor, he explained Antonio's unique abilities, detailing his skill at spotting thieves and identifying criminals.
John and Max listened in stunned silence, their jaws dropping as Sam recounted Antonio's accomplishments.
Just that morning, Antonio had not only caught another thief but also dismantled an entire criminal operation, freeing six women and five children, one of whom was the child of a prominent city leader.
By the time Sam finished recounting Antonio's record, John was completely dumbfounded.
"Wait, wait… This can't be real," John said, incredulous. "Are you telling me Antonio did all that? It sounds like something out of a movie!"
Sam crossed his arms, clearly enjoying the moment. "You can check the police station's records if you don't believe me," he said smugly. "Especially about the A-level wanted criminals and the criminal den he busted. It's all there."
John didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Was Sam spinning a wild tale, or was Antonio really this good?
He glanced at Antonio. "So, Antonio, is everything your mentor said true?"
Antonio hesitated, about to downplay the praise, when his nose twitched.
"There's something going on," he said suddenly, his eyes narrowing as he looked toward the station entrance.
John followed Antonio's gaze, his curiosity piqued.
Antonio continued, "There's a gang of thieves near the entrance. Seven or eight people, most likely a small crew. Want to help take them down?"
John blinked, momentarily stunned by Antonio's calm confidence. Then he nodded, adrenaline beginning to surge.
"Let's do it."
Half an Hour Later
Antonio had successfully led the team in apprehending the gang of thieves. They were now seated in the station's holding area, awaiting processing.
"Unbelievable," John muttered under his breath, still trying to wrap his head around everything that had happened.
Max, sitting beside him, was equally stunned. "He's like a walking crime radar," he whispered.
Sam, meanwhile, was basking in the glow of his apprentice's success. "Told you," he said smugly. "This kid is the real deal."
Antonio, however, shrugged off the compliments, his focus already shifting to the next task.
For him, it was all part of serving the people.
