Chapter 25 - Wood Essence Herb
Actually, Qin Nan had already guessed that there was a treasure nearby, but he deliberately hinted at Shangguan Rouyue to let her mention it instead.
Although they knew the area where the one-eyed wolf had been active wasn’t large, finding a hidden treasure wasn’t going to be easy.
If it were that simple, the villagers would have discovered it long ago instead of waiting for a beast to find it.
However, such a task was no match for the two of them.
Shangguan Rouyue extended her divine sense to search and quickly pinpointed the hidden treasure’s location.
The two then arrived at a small stream, finding the treasure beneath a moss-covered rock. It turned out to be a crystal-clear herb that looked unremarkable at first glance—no wonder it had remained undiscovered until now.
It was a Wood Essence Herb, a lower-grade spiritual plant.
Even though it was low-grade, its medicinal effects far surpassed those of ordinary herbs. However, this herb wasn’t yet mature and needed more time to develop fully.
If it were mature, the one-eyed wolf would have eaten it and left the area long ago.
Because it was guarding this Wood Essence Herb, the one-eyed wolf lingered in the vicinity.
Waiting for the herb to mature would take at least another month, but who could guarantee that no accidents would occur during that time?
Kneeling down, Qin Nan carefully used a small shovel to uproot the herb along with the surrounding soil.
His plan was simple: transplant the herb into his own medicinal field at home.
Not only would it be safer there, but the field’s unique properties would also significantly accelerate its growth.
“Let’s head back, dear,” Qin Nan said.
Although there was still time to gather more herbs, Qin Nan worried that leaving the Wood Essence Herb out for too long might drain its vitality, reducing its efficacy. Planting it immediately seemed like the best option.
Shortly after, they returned to their home in Niujiao Village and landed directly in the center of the medicinal field.
Qin Nan picked the best spot in the field to plant the herb. After watering it with spring water, the plant appeared vibrant and its leaves grew even greener.
It looked like it would be just fine.
“If only we could find more spiritual plants to fill this field,” Qin Nan muttered greedily.
“I can look around, hubby. Maybe I’ll find a few more,” Shangguan Rouyue offered.
“Thanks, dear. But don’t force it; it’s fine if you don’t find anything,” Qin Nan said.
Shangguan Rouyue nodded and then flew off.
Meanwhile, Qin Nan sat down in the field, focusing on his cultivation. Without his wife around, he felt free to cultivate his demonic technique at full strength.
The Heavenly Calamity Eight Desolations Demonic Technique was a technique Qin Nan had created himself in the past. It was immensely powerful, surpassing even celestial-level techniques.
With the overwhelming power of this demonic technique, countless immortals and demons fell at Qin Nan’s hands in those days.
It was this technique that had made Qin Nan the fearsome Demon King of his era, leaving countless immortals and demons trembling in his wake.
As he cultivated at full power, the area around him began to dim. An unseen force seemed to pull all the surrounding Qi and vitality toward him.
Qin Nan resembled a human-shaped abyss, greedily devouring everything around him like an insatiable void.
Even the ground beneath him began to dry and crack without his notice.
Realizing the disturbance, Qin Nan quickly stopped using the demonic technique and switched to ordinary breathwork.
Shangguan Rouyue returned at that moment, casting a suspicious glance at Qin Nan and then at the surrounding area.
It was evening by now, and the dimness of twilight made the environment naturally dark. But something about this spot seemed unnaturally shadowy, and she felt a faint, unsettling aura lingering nearby.
“Did you find any spiritual plants, dear?” Qin Nan asked, deliberately steering the conversation.
“Yes, I found a few, though not many. I also gathered plenty of regular medicinal herbs,” Shangguan Rouyue replied.
With a wave of her sleeve, a heap of herbs and seedlings appeared before Qin Nan, with over a dozen crystal-clear spiritual plants sitting at the top.
Qin Nan had assumed spiritual plants would be rare, as he had often ventured into the mountains without finding any. Yet, his wifey had managed to collect so many in just an afternoon.
Unbeknownst to him, Shangguan Rouyue had scoured the area using her vast divine sense, effectively “digging three feet deep” across over twenty nearby mountains.
Despite her thoroughness, she only found a little over a dozen spiritual plants—proof of just how scarce such treasures truly were.
Qin Nan got to work right away, planting the spiritual plants and some of the better herb seedlings in his medicinal field.
Late at night, under a dark, moonless sky.
Three shadowy figures crept toward Qin Nan’s home, their movements cautious and silent.
Their target wasn’t the house itself but the backyard, where they soon arrived at the medicinal field. A small wooden fence blocked their way.
However, the flimsy fence wasn’t much of an obstacle, and they quickly climbed over it.
Standing before the lush medicinal field, He Qing, the leader, sneered viciously.
“Boss, isn’t this going a bit too far?” one of his subordinates hesitated.
“What’s too far about it? Qin Nan started it by attacking me. He brought this on himself,” He Qing said coldly, lowering his voice when he realized it was too loud.
“That’s right! Boss is right. Qin Nan has been acting high and mighty ever since he learned how to treat illnesses. It’s time someone taught him a lesson,” the other subordinate chimed in.
Instead of confronting Qin Nan directly, they had chosen to destroy his medicinal field as an act of revenge.
He Qing’s face twisted in malice. “Qin Nan, I’ll make you pay for your arrogance. You’ve put so much effort into this field, haven’t you?
“Let’s see how you feel when it’s all gone, kekekeke.”
Two of the lackeys were already rubbing their hands in anticipation. They weren’t just thinking of destroying the medicinal field—they wanted to steal and sell all the herbs in the city, imagining they could fetch a good sum.
They were counting on their get-rich-quick scheme.
Creak.
The sound of a door opening, followed by footsteps.
Qin Nan appeared, carrying a lit lantern, with Shangguan Rouyue following close behind.
He looked at the three men mockingly, as if silently asking, What do you think you’re doing here?
The three froze, their hearts pounding.
They had been as stealthy as possible, careful not to make unnecessary noise. After all, sneaking around was their specialty, and it was rare for them to be caught.
Yet here they were, caught red-handed by Qin Nan. It was… awkward.
Fortunately, they hadn’t destroyed the medicinal field yet. If they had, there would be no way to explain themselves.
They couldn’t help but wonder how Qin Nan had discovered them.
In truth, it was Shangguan Rouyue who had noticed them first. The moment the three intruders approached, her diving senses had detected their presence.
At her cultivation level, she was extremely attuned to her surroundings. Trying to sneak past her was simply impossible.
“What are you doing sneaking around here in the dead of night?” Qin Nan asked teasingly.
