I am Just an Average Tamer

Chapter 3: Hollowsky Wolf

'T-The Wicked Forest Witch!' Kai's mind screamed, his heart pounding wildly in his chest. He sat there frozen, his gaze locked onto the figure next to him.

Sniff! Sob!

It was the figure of a little girl, seemingly around his age.

She had pulled her knees up to her chin, clutching them tightly as she trembled and sobbed, tears streaming from her bright green eyes.

Her cascading platinum hair was messy and untamed.

Faint trails of blood oozed from the small scratches on her body.

Beads of sweat formed on Kai's forehead.

'She's just like those old-timers used to say,' he thought inwardly.

'What should I do now? Wait…' He glanced at her cautiously, a wave of assurance washed over him.

Phew!

He sighed in relief. 'She hasn't noticed me yet.'

HOWL!

Before he could take a step back, a menacing howl cut through the air.

He turned toward the sound, his heart started racing as the beast slowly came into view.

It stood roughly six feet tall, its silver-grey fur shimmering under the dim light. Its blue eyes glowed with a cold, murderous intent, fixated on its prey.

Gulp!

"H-Hollowsky Wolf... but it's much b-bigger," Kai stammered, his eyes widened at the terrifying sight of the creature before him.

The Hollowsky Wolf's eyes were locked onto the little girl, its gaze fixed with a chilling intensity. It advanced toward her with steady, predatory steps.

Noticing the incoming danger, the girl scrambled to her feet and bolted in the opposite direction.

Her foot caught on a pebble, and she stumbled, crashing to the ground with a sharp cry.

The Hollowsky Wolf slowed its pace, now savoring the chase. Its glowing blue eyes glinted with what seemed like amusement as it approached.

As the gap between them closed, the girl froze, her eyes wide with terror.

HOWL!

The menacing howl snapped her out of her frozen state, her heart skipped a beat as she saw the beast looming just in front of her.

Tears streamed down her face as she scrambled backward, driven purely by instinct—the fear of death.

The beast closed the distance slowly, toying with its prey. She squeezed her eyes shut, clutching her head, as the creature stood over her, opening its maw to taste its prey.

'I-I need to get out of here. I don't want to be wolf food,' Kai thought, his eyes locked on the scene unfolding before him. But just as he made a move to escape—

FRRRT!

'Shit!' Kai cursed inwardly as the Hollowsky Wolf's eyes immediately snapped to him, glowing with killing intent, as if the foul sound and smell of his blunder were enough to make him its next prey.

Grr!

It roared and dashed towards the bush where he was hiding.

Kai's heart skipped a beat as the beast closed in, but he quickly snapped out of it. Without thinking, he bolted toward the small tree to his right.

In a flash, he climbed the tree, reaching the top branch before leaping to grab a glowing vine on the next tree.

Whoosh!

He swung across, passing several trees before rolling to the ground in a controlled tumble.

He sprang to his feet, immediately dashing toward the bushes, zig-zagging to make himself a harder target.

He peeked over his shoulder, seeing the wolf closing distance rapidly. His expressions turned to grim.

'I'm dead, there no way I can survive. It's gonna eat me! Aaaaah!' he cried inwardly.

{Haha! Got yourself into trouble again.}

A high pitched, mocking voice rang in his mind as he desperately tried to get away from the wolf.

'Oh, you can hear me? Even from this far?'

Kai's eyes widened in surprise, but he didn't have much time to dwell in this topic since he was running with his tail between his legs.

{Boy, I'm injured physically, not mentally.}

"Then take down this damn wolf, you are also a magic beast damn it!"

{...}

{I think you missed the part where I said, 'physically injured'.}

"If you're too weak to deal with this beast, then shut up. I guess you're just all talk."

{Hey! Don't compare me to that lowly beast!}

The voice in his mind snapped, shifting from its earlier mocking tone.

{Hmph! Just do what I say, take a left now.}

''Umm,'' Kai murmured nodding and turned left.

He kept following the directions the voice in his mind was giving him, praying it would lead to something other than disaster.

After a few moments of running, he spotted a slightly larger rock and, without hesitation, jumped onto it.

From there, he leapt toward the tree in front of him, grabbing its branch just in time.

Climbing quickly, he then jumped, grabbing another glowing vine, descending from the thicker branches of an even larger tree.

The Hollowsky Wolf, watched its snack jumping on trees like a monkey, it growled in frustration.

With a surge of energy, it picked up its pace, jumping onto the rock and leaping after Kai with fierce determination to catch him.

Closing the distance in mid-air, the wolf bared its fangs, ready to finally catch the slippery monkey.

{Ah, I guess I led you into a death trap. Sorry, boy. You'll always be in my memories...sniff!}

Kai didn't have time to reply or react. His blood ran cold, chill ran down his spine watching, as the wolf lunged at him, coming straight for the kill.

With his heart pounding, he squeezed his eyes shut, twisting in mid-air as he swung on the glowing green vine.

Thud!

Thudding sound reverted in the air as, the wolf that seemed to have caught Kai, dropped down in a pit.

Whoosh!

"Phew!" he sighed, swinging back.

{Tsk.}

"Hey! What was that?!" Kai exploded in anger. But before he could say another word, the voice in his mind resonated again.

{Move your miserable ass if you don't want to die.}

Ignoring the insult, he let go of the vine and rolled onto the ground.

Standing on his feet, he quickly dashed in the direction where he came from without even glancing at the direction, where the wolf had just dropped, fearing-or maybe knowing it would come out from it eventually.

{I will keep that wolf and others busy, you get out of forest quickly.}

'Wait? Can you really do it?'

{Stop talking!}

Kai nodded, without saying anything he kept running.

Grr!

The Hollowsky Wolf growled as it stood up after the fall. It lunged forward, attempting to leap out of the pit, but after a few struggling steps, it slid back down before reaching the top.

The pit wasn't deep enough to harm or kill the beast, but it was enough to temporarily trap it.

Kai kept running for his life until he saw the same little girl, "Wicked Witch" he muttered.

She was wiping the tears with her hands that were rolling down from her eyes and was sobbing trying her best to not cry out loud to attract the beasts. She kept walking slowly to the direction he had come from.

As he passed by her, Kai subconsciously grabbed her hand and tugged her along, saying, "It's too dangerous here. Let's go back to the town."

She jolted in surprise as he dragged her, but didn't resist. She knew she'd be safer—at least alive—following a fellow human rather than staying in a forest filled with beasts.

Tears still streamed down her face, but she kept moving, doing her best to match Kai's pace despite the injuries and fatigue weighing her down.

Gulp!

'I'm holding a witch's hand,' Kai thought, gulping down his saliva as his heart pounding fast in his chest. 'And on top of that, I'm actually taking her back to my town...'

'WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH ME!?' he screamed hard inwardly.
