Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Seduction?
After listening to Hill's intelligence briefing, Dr. Banner showed little interest. He spoke bluntly:
"No matter what kind of superpowered individual they are, if they dare stand in front of me, the Hulk will flatten them with one punch.
But if you want me to fight, I can't guarantee I won't accidentally hurt our allies. When the Hulk loses it, I have no control over him.
So, honestly, this meeting has little to do with me. I just want to see Betty as soon as possible! That was the condition you all promised me!"
As Dr. Banner became increasingly agitated, his neck suddenly swelled, and a faint green hue spread across his face. His growing anger made him terrifying to behold.
Seeing Banner's menacing expression, everyone in the meeting room immediately went on high alert.
Hawkeye and Black Widow instinctively reached for their holstered guns, their gazes locked on Banner with serious expressions.
Captain Steve Rogers quickly stepped in to diffuse the tension: "Dr. Banner, please calm down. I'm sure S.H.I.E.L.D. will honor such a small request."
Hearing Captain America directly commit S.H.I.E.L.D. to this promise, Fury's face darkened.
He had originally been making empty promises to placate Banner, but now Steve had said it out loud, leaving Fury no choice but to actually pull strings and make it happen.
Lately, the U.S. military, led by General Ross, had been constantly causing trouble for S.H.I.E.L.D. due to Banner's affiliation with them.
Now, arranging a meeting between Banner and Betty would only further provoke General Ross.
But the situation had already spiraled out of control. Fury had no choice but to follow Steve's lead and offer reassurance:
"Dr. Banner, give me three days. I guarantee you'll see Betty within that time."
Hearing the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. himself make this commitment, Banner quickly calmed down. While he realized he was essentially forcing their hand, the result was all that mattered.
Rubbing his hands together with an awkward smile, he said:
"Sorry, I lost control of my emotions earlier. I still can't fully control myself, so it's best if you don't provoke me too much."
Sitting beside what felt like a ticking "nuclear bomb," everyone reacted differently to his apology.
Hawkeye and Black Widow relaxed, lowering their hands from their weapons and resuming their usual stoic expressions.
Tony Stark, on the other hand, maintained his signature "couldn't care less" smirk.
Agent Coulson, ever the calm optimist, smiled faintly. As the least combat-capable person in the room, he knew he wouldn't stand a chance if things went south, so he decided it was best to accept his fate with grace.
Hill, a Level 7 S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, remained as composed as ever. Having a strong heart was a basic requirement for her job. As long as the Earth wasn't literally exploding, she would stay unfazed.
Noticing how rattled everyone else seemed by Banner's near outburst, Tony's eyes gleamed with a touch of mockery as he said:
"Tsk tsk... Look at how nervous you all are.
Honestly, Dr. Banner, your big green form is seriously cool. I'm even tempted to fight you just to test out my new suit's performance."
Hearing such an irresponsible remark, Fury's eyelid twitched, nearly giving him a heart attack. Only someone as flippant as Tony Stark could say something so outrageous.
Sensing Fury's displeasure, Coulson quickly stepped in to smooth things over.
"Uh, let's just move on from this little episode, shall we? We need to focus on how to handle Umbrella Corporation's next moves."
Tony's expression immediately soured. The last time he faced Umbrella, he'd been spared by their mercy, which was the most humiliating moment of his life. Without hesitation, he said:
"Handle them? Why not just hit them head-on? We've got plenty of manpower now—the big guy, the relic from the last century, and me, Iron Man. If we fight them again, there's no way we'd lose!"
Steve had been unusually quiet throughout the meeting, largely because he had recently uncovered the "truth" about S.H.I.E.L.D.
Someone had left an anonymous dossier in his Brooklyn apartment, which had cast a shadow over his heart and left him uncertain about how to address certain issues.
However, hearing Tony's fiery suggestion to attack directly, Steve couldn't help but agree.
Though he hadn't fought Carl and Wanda personally, and the intelligence painted them as formidable opponents, Steve wasn't entirely convinced of their strength.
Still, as someone not yet fully acclimated to this new world, he spoke with caution:
"While I agree with fighting them, it definitely shouldn't happen in New York. A battle in the city could cause massive civilian casualties.
If we don't have a solid, well-thought-out plan, the consequences of rushing into a fight could be catastrophic."
Despite his cavalier demeanor, Tony did have a moral bottom line when it came to civilian safety. Hearing Steve's point, he pursed his lips and fell silent for a moment.
Suddenly, as if struck by inspiration, Tony proposed:
"The moment I saw that Carl guy, I knew exactly what kind of person he is.
He's the type who pretends to be all upright and proper but secretly indulges in all kinds of pleasures. I've seen plenty of his kind before.
If we send Natasha to seduce him, I bet there's a good chance we can lure him out of New York."
Before Natasha could respond, Fury immediately shot down the idea.
"You think we haven't considered using seduction? Carl's security is practically impenetrable.
He has a 200-strong elite guard protecting him 24/7, and any potential vulnerabilities are covered by Umbrella's AI.
We can't even get close to him, let alone use seduction. You wouldn't get within two kilometers of him before being shot down!"
Hearing about such an exaggerated security detail, Tony frowned. The couple's combat abilities were already formidable, yet they were this paranoid about safety?
Two hundred elite guards? Even the President didn't have that kind of protection!
At this point, Agent Hill spoke up, surprisingly siding with Tony's suggestion.
"I actually think Stark's idea has some merit. Carl and Wanda didn't come to New York just to sightsee.
If they attend any business gatherings or parties, we might have a chance to approach them."
Hearing Hill align with his plan, Tony smirked smugly, as if to say, See? Someone gets it.
"See, I told you it was a feasible plan! So let's send Natasha. With her charm, she'll have Carl eating out of her hand in no time."
Natasha didn't show any signs of resistance. If using her allure could neutralize Carl, it would indeed minimize casualties.
However, Dr. Banner, with his unparalleled intellect, wasn't convinced.
"Relying on a female agent? That's absurdly unreliable.
As Umbrella's boss, Carl has probably seen all kinds of women. Seduction? The chances of success are slim. Frankly, I think this plan is stupid."
After hearing Banner's perspective, most of the people in the room began to agree that the idea was far-fetched.
In truth, Tony hadn't been entirely serious when he suggested it. He just wanted an excuse to tease the "ice queen" Natasha, who had previously worked as his personal assistant.
