I Broke Off My Engagement and Got a Job at the Academy

chapter 90

90. Spirits

When Giselle arrived at the road leading to High Mountain, she couldn’t help but exclaim, because the height was so absurd.

But she soon pulled herself together and took a deep breath.

Even for experienced climbers, climbing a high mountain takes more than a week. In short, it means that simply moving quickly is not the answer.

Ultimately, only those who could adapt to the harsh environment of the high mountains and move steadily and calmly could achieve good results.

With that thought in mind, Giselle and the other students walked into the high mountains.

“ah….”

And, as soon as she entered the realm of High Mountain, Giselle groaned. She could feel it instinctively. The atmosphere was different from outside.

The energy of Mother Nature was so vivid and vibrant that it made me think, “Wow, there must be spirits here.”

And soon after, Giselle discovered something of a peculiar shape.

The appearance of creatures whose entire bodies glow with translucent colors such as red and blue.

Not only that, the creatures were floating and flying around as if they were not affected by gravity.

‘A spirit, is that what you call it?’

Giselle was amazed at the sight, then came to her senses and made a hmm, hmm sound.

Several people approached her like that.

“Giselle, would you like to come with us? A few of us are getting together and planning to climb High Mountain together. It would definitely be helpful.”

Giselle shook her head at those words. She thought that if she were alone, she could go faster, but if she were with others, she would be tied down. Anyway, this evaluation was an individual competition and first-come-first-served. She couldn’t trust it completely, so she didn’t want to put up with that.

‘This time, I will definitely beat Vanessa Delphias.’

That was the only way to soothe her wounded pride. Thinking so, Giselle walked alone, away from the others.

Then, Giselle discovered the forms of spirits once again.

The sight of green birds and yellow clay figurines together. Giselle involuntarily approached the spirits.

[what?]

The green bird responded. Then the clay doll opened its mouth.

[I think they can see us. I guess it’s strange.]

Giselle opened her mouth to say that.

“Uh… spirits, right?”

Then the green bird flapped its wings and circled around Giselle as if it had seen something new.

[Wow, what is this, are we really the humans we see? It’s a quality that only one in a thousand people have, even without having developed any natural affinity.]

[Even though he has a naturally high affinity for nature, it seems that he has increased his affinity for nature even further with special equipment. If he does well, he might be able to contract with a mid-level spirit?]

At those words, Giselle opened her eyes wide and said.

“…Can you make a contract with a spirit?”

Then the clay doll waved its hand.

[Not now, but after you’ve made sufficient preparations, you can try to make a contract. This place is quite close to the spirit world, but even so, making a contract with an entity from another world is not an easy task.]

In short, it means that it is difficult to sign a contract now that there is no preparation. Giselle sighed in regret at those words.

[Instead, I’m glad that a human being has come to see us from the outside, and if there’s anything I can help you with, I’ll help you.]

At the words spoken by the green bird, Giselle opened her eyes wide and said.

“Excuse me, can you tell me a shortcut? My goal is to get to the top of this mountain.”

Then the spirits made a sound like, “Eum.”

[That might be a bit difficult. We are not affected by the environment here, or rather, we are positively affected, so if we move as we move, the human body would not be able to endure it.]

[Is there a spirit that knows the shortcut that humans can take…?]

Then, suddenly, another spirit’s voice was heard.

[If there is a shortcut that humans can take, I know it.]

A blue wolf. It was a wolf with an energy that was incomparable to that of the green bird and the yellow clay doll. Seeing the wolf, the green bird spoke with a surprised look.

[Ah! It’s a high-level water spirit! High-level spirits usually don’t come out of the spirit realm, so what’s going on?]

The clay doll tapped the bird’s wing and spoke.

[What’s going on here? You’re speaking informally. High-ranking water spirit, what brings you here…?]

Then the blue wolf looked at Giselle with a noble expression and said.

[Don’t worry. I don’t mean any harm. I just want to help a young human child.]

At those words, the green bird croaked and spoke to Giselle.

[That’s great! If the higher spirits help, it will be very comfortable and safe! What I wanted came true!]

Then Giselle looked at the blue wolf with a surprised and slightly surprised expression and said:

“…Can you give me some shortcut directions?”

Then the wolf nodded.

[Don’t worry. I will guide you to a safe path.]

At those words, Giselle opened her eyes wide and looked relieved.

The wolf turned his back on Giselle and began to walk away.

[Follow me, you human with precious talent.]

Giselle followed the wolf with a bright expression. The wolf briefly examined Giselle’s arm, but only for a moment.

As a result of taking that shortcut, Giselle was definitely able to climb the mountain at an incredible speed.

The biggest problem when climbing a high mountain is that you never know how the natural environment will change drastically due to the mischief of the spirits. If you get caught by a spirit with a bad personality, you could end up wandering through the forest.

However, this was not the case for Giselle. This was because the blue wolf next to Giselle controlled the spirits to prevent such a drastic change in the natural environment and make the path easy for Giselle.

At that sight, Giselle felt grateful to the wolf. Later, when she was able to handle the spirits, she thought about meeting the blue wolf again and making a contract with him. Of course, since he was a high-level spirit, it was still a long way off.

As we continued to move and rest like that, night finally came.

“Excuse me, Spirit. Can I pitch a tent here and get some sleep?”

Giselle was careful with the spirit because if she offended the spirit or the spirit left, she could get lost and get into trouble. Then, the blue wolf nodded coolly, making Giselle’s worries seem meaningless.

[No problem. The spirits also rest and sleep in the spirit world anyway. It’s not like they can’t understand that. Feel free to rest.]

Giselle’s expression brightened at those words and she began to pitch the tent. After she finished pitching the tent, Giselle began to cast an alarm spell.

It was a spell that sounded an alarm to the wizard when something approached his surroundings. Then the wolf shook his head.

[There are many spirits in High Mountain, but because the power of Mother Nature is strong, there are also many animals and monsters. If you use alarm magic, it will be difficult to rest comfortably. I will watch over you while you sleep, so just sleep.]

Then Giselle narrowed her eyes and said.

“…Is that okay? I hope it won’t be too much of a bother.”

[Since the spirits have come to the Middle-earth as incarnations, unless their main body is summoned by a spirit master, they do not need to sleep or rest. So, sleep well.]

Then Giselle hesitated for a moment and then opened her mouth.

“…Thank you. But, Spirit, why are you being so kind to me?”

Then the spirit thought for a moment and answered.

[Because I liked you.]

When Giselle heard those words, she felt something pounding in her heart.

The spirit had nothing to gain from him, but he was still happy that he liked him and was helping him.

Giselle nodded at the spirit’s words.

“…Thank you.”

[Okay, now go to sleep.]

So Giselle lay down on her bed and looked up at the tent ceiling.

I was glad that I was able to get help from the spirit, but somehow I had mixed feelings.

As Giselle pondered the reason, she realized the reason.

Eden Cainus. Like a spirit, he was someone who helped me without any compensation.

But the difference is that he didn’t like himself very much.

“…I wish that person had said that too.”

Giselle muttered something like that, then covered her mouth when she realized what she had said.

She soon closed her eyes, trying to shake off her distracting thoughts, and soon fell asleep.

The wolf continued to quietly watch the girl who was falling asleep like that.

Then, a red lizard approached the girl’s tent. Then the wolf grabbed the lizard and growled.

[This idiot, did he want to appear in Middle-earth by targeting that girl?]

Yes. The red lizard was a spirit who was trying to manipulate Giselle into summoning himself. The spirit started to beg when his plan was discovered and a higher spirit was guarding the girl.

[Sorry, sorry. I won’t do that next time-]

[gibberish.]

The wolf bit the lizard without a moment’s hesitation, and the lizard turned into a mere flame and scattered.

So, the night passed while the girl was sleeping.
