I Can See the Sword’s Memories

Chapter 28

Chapter 28: The White Dragon Sword

“The White Dragon Sword,” Kanok said. “When mana flows through its blade, a faint dragon’s image appears on it. They say it came from another dimension… though that claim hasn’t been confirmed. The blade is short, and the edge is blunt—that’s its drawback. Are you certain you want to choose this?”

I nodded in response. The sword’s shorter length and blunt edge didn’t matter to me. What was important was the memory contained within the blade.

The rumors about it coming from another dimension were true. The memories etched into the sword confirmed it for me.

A vivid image emerged in my mind: a pure white dragon resting atop towering mountain peaks blanketed in eternal snow. It gazed down upon the world from the summit, a place known as the Snow Dragon’s Perch.

A martial sect had been established there.

‘The dragon’s essence imbues the sword, making it capable of cutting through anything.’

Through the sword’s engraved memories, the chant flowed into me. The blunt edge was no issue—the chilling frost enveloping the blade shaped the sword energy, replacing sharpness with sheer force.

Suppressing the surging energy within me, I reined in the wildly excited mana.

The frost emanating from the sword restrained the mana, preventing it from pouring uncontrollably into the blade.

A faint gleam flickered across my eyes as the realization took hold.

Meanwhile, Flora made her choice—a bracelet crafted from black pearls strung together.

“This is called the Veil of Night,” Kanok explained. “In dangerous moments, it absorbs the wearer’s mana to generate a protective barrier. The barrier isn’t particularly strong, but it could save your life at a critical moment.”

With our choices made, Kanok nodded, and Jack Churchill, standing nearby, began jotting down details in a thick ledger.

Watching us, Kanok remarked, “Theo also had an eye for quality. This group of recruits seems to have good instincts.”

“Theo received a reward as well?” I asked.

“Of course. His performance was better than yours.”

I glanced at Flora, who nodded in confirmation. It seemed that while I was unconscious, Theo had already claimed his reward.

With our business at the imperial palace concluded, the three of us returned to the Azure Wings headquarters.

Kanok and Flora headed to the colosseum to watch the remaining matches, but I stayed behind.

I cited my poor condition as an excuse, though my true intention was to fully absorb the memories contained within the White Dragon Sword.

Once they departed, I returned to my room and locked the door.

Shrrk—

Drawing the blade, the faint image of a dragon shimmered across its surface.

Mana surged from my heart, racing through my veins and spreading a chilling frost.

Swish—

Recalling the sword techniques stored in its memories, I began to move. My senses grew razor-sharp, heightening to an almost unnerving degree.

What kind of swordsmanship could make one’s senses this sensitive?

I allowed the mana to flow freely as the chant guided me.

‘Ascend the eternal snowfields and embody the dragon’s mystique. Embrace nature as it is, wielding the blade as a river flows.’

The frosty mana rose, traversing unfamiliar pathways. From my heart, it climbed to my throat, then overtook my head, clearing away distractions.

The chill eradicated stray thoughts, rendering my surroundings blurred and distant. For the first time, I felt my senses deliberately narrowed to a singular focus.

It was exhilarating.

The simple act of wielding the sword brought joy. The aches in my wrists and ankles faded—not because I had healed, but because the frost emanating from the mana dulled the pain.

Yet paradoxically, my sensitivity to my surroundings grew sharper.

The memories embedded in the blade were a constant source of astonishment.

‘The frosty blade contains the spirit of the mountains. The tempest it unleashes can even bring down birds in flight.’

The free-flowing mana responded to the chant, shifting its course from my shoulders through my veins and muscles. In a sudden, explosive surge, it concentrated at the tip of the blade.

Shiiing—!

The strike was precise, devoid of unnecessary movements. As the blade cut through the air, it transitioned seamlessly into the next action.

The sword imparted two martial techniques to me:

White Dragon’s Core (Baekryong Simgyeol)

Tai Baek Snow Dragon Sword (Taebaek Seollyonggeom)

Two techniques, yet one. Both were born from the same inspiration, thoughtfully divided for different purposes.

The Tai Baek Snow Dragon Sword was a technique of extreme speed. Its swift, relentless strikes mirrored the form of a white dragon concealed in a snowstorm.

The White Dragon’s Core heightened sensitivity, dulling pain while amplifying other senses.

It allowed me to perceive hostility and anticipate the next move amid the flurry of attacks.

It wasn’t an inner cultivation method—there was no process to store or build internal energy. The chant only guided me in manipulating my natural energy.

I preferred it this way. I tailored the technique to align with my inner vision, crafting it to fit the massive eternal snowfield now imprinted in my consciousness.

Swish—

The intense dance of swordsmanship reached its end. The frost-laden blade traced an elegant arc as it returned smoothly to its worn scabbard.

Click.

“Whew…”

The memories had been fully absorbed. Now, all that remained was to familiarize myself with them. A cold sigh escaped from between my crimson lips.

‘So much sleep tonight…’

Without proper rest, my growth might be stunted…

Balancing the excitement of my newfound skills against my desire for physical growth, I lay on the bed.

Ten minutes later, I got back up.

Shhhik—!

The gleaming white blade traced an elegant arc through the air.

***

During the ongoing tournament, I stayed indoors. Engraving the sword’s memories into my body took priority over its results.

For similar reasons, Theo and Flora also remained at the Azure Wings headquarters. Both were busy mastering their newly acquired equipment.

Leaning against the training hall wall, I watched Theo practice. His reward from the tournament was a small ring.

Oath of Thunder.

The ring was said to hold the essence of lightning, imbued with magic to amplify lightning-attributed mana.

It suited Theo perfectly.

“Here I go!”

Crackle!

With a shout, electric-blue lightning erupted from Theo’s body. The amount of energy emanating from him had clearly increased compared to before.

His speed and strength had grown as well. But what use was greater power if he still couldn’t control its direction?

I closed my eyes just as a loud thud echoed through the hall.

I didn’t need to look—it was the unmistakable sound of Theo crashing into the training hall wall.

Turning my gaze, I watched Flora. She had found a unique way to use her Veil of Night.

Instead of forming a protective barrier around herself, she used minimal mana to create platforms in midair.

Her ingenuity didn’t stop there—she continued discovering various applications. Flora was growing stronger every day.

At that moment, the three of us turned our attention toward the entrance of the training hall, sensing a familiar presence.

It was Kanok.

“You’re all working hard, I see.”

“Vice-Captain Kanok.”

After greeting him lightly, Kanok walked straight toward me.

“I’ve found it, Saeorin.”

“Found what, sir…?”

“The one you asked me to track.”

Thud—

Kanok handed me a document envelope. Opening it, I scanned its contents, my mouth hanging open in shock.

Long ago, when I was first learning to read, I had filled out a request form with Flora’s help after reading through the Azure Wings manual.

Every member of the Azure Wings was granted a unique privilege—the ability to utilize the Empire’s intelligence network to track a specific reincarnator.

I hadn’t placed much hope in it, given how little information I could provide. Yet here it was—a response.

Attached to the report was a sketch of the man in question.

I stared at the image, my breath catching.

How could I forget? This was the man who had slaughtered my siblings. The image of their bodies falling, blood spraying in all directions, remained seared in my memory.

I clenched my teeth, a low, trembling voice slipping through the gaps.

“Are we going after him immediately?”

“Not for now. The tournament is still ongoing,” Kanok said firmly.

“Then…?”

“After the tournament ends, a team will be assembled to eliminate him. However, you won’t be part of that team.”

“What? Why not?”

“Saeorin, it’s because you’re not ready. We can’t assign a junior knight to pursue someone who has evaded the Azure Wings’ pursuit for twenty years. The team for this mission will consist of three intermediate knights, two senior knights, and one vice-captain.”

I closed my mouth, frustration building inside me. I had worked tirelessly to grow stronger, yet the wall of revenge still loomed far away, impossibly high.

The thought of being unable to claim vengeance with my own hands stung deeply.

Hoping for some chance, I asked hesitantly, “What does it take to become an intermediate knight?”

“You’re still far off,” Kanok replied bluntly. “You’ll need to complete at least three more dispatch missions to qualify for the promotion exam.”

Three dispatch missions. With only a few days left until the end of the tournament, the time needed felt insurmountable.

I stared at the document in my hands for a long moment before letting out a deep sigh, releasing some of the frustration boiling inside me.

“I understand.”
