Chapter 47: Start of the Second Round
The night passed and a new day arrived.
The 2nd day of the Rookie Trainer Competition has begun. In the central stadium of the Pokemon Branch Alliance, one can see the audience standing up from their seats.
Among the audience, there were small-time news reporters hoping to get some big scoop, locals who took advantage to watch this free event, scouts from Trainer Universities, as well as friends and family members of the participants.
There was a large battle arena in the middle of the stadium. On the side of the arena, 32 teenagers were lined up, holding their hands in front of their chest and reciting the Pokemon Alliance Anthem.
"You teach me and I'll teach you, Pokemon!"
"And now, the opening ceremony is finally over! It's time for the battle between the 32 qualifying participants to begin! I'm your Pokemon announcer, Mike Loud and I will be responsible for today's commentary!"
There was a media tribune on one side of the stadium. A lanky man who has long, spiked blond hair and greenish-yellow eyes was seated in front of a long table. Beside him, there was a burgundy-haired beauty with sky-blue eyes, long maroon eyelashes, and a purple eye pigment
"For today's competition, we will be joined by one of the rising stars among the new generation of Pokemon Trainers, Chasca Flower-Feather!"
"Hello everyone, it also feels nice for me to join you today."
"So Chasca, I'm a bit curious. I heard you've just recently led an operation to capture an internationally wanted criminal gang. Was joining us here today considered as taking a well-deserved break from your work?"
"Haha, eh, I guess you can say that."
Chasca awkwardly scratched her head while taking a side-long glance at the medical area. She can't say that she was forced to take a break by someone, right?
"Well then, today's match will surely not disappoint you! The Rookie Trainers for this year's competition are among the strongest seen in the last few years! And now, it's time for the players to draw their number to determine the match-ups!"
A staff member came towards the Trainers on the field one-by-one while holding a box with a circular hole on top. Inside the box, there were golf-like balls labeled with numbers from 1-32. Each player took out one ball and showed the number to the staff at the side.
At the top of the stadium, a large, four-paneled TV was constantly updating the match-ups between the Trainers.
Dante and Shinobu were standing side-by-side among the Trainers. Dante got the number 31, while Shinobu got 6.
"Ahh, it looks like we'll meet at the finals then. There's no backing out from our bet now."
Shinobu was particularly pleased after seeing their numbers. She was very confident that, except for Dante, she would have no problem getting past the other Trainers.
"Well, I really need to think about what to ask from you after getting first place hehehe."
Looking at Dante's suggestive smirk, Shinobu's face turned a shade of red. She really hadn't thought much about her word last night. However, she trusts Dante not to go too far with his request.
'Dante has been a gentleman since we met, he wouldn't request for something inappropriate, right?…But what if he did? If he requests for me to do t-this or that, should I agree?'
Imagining various possible X-rated scenarios, Shinobu's head began to steam. Luckily, the drawing phase has ended and the announcer's voice interrupted Shinobu from her daydream.
"For the first match, we'll have Trainers Louis Sanchez and Darryl Asher! For the other Trainers, please move to the side of the stadium."
"You're number, 31? That's good. It's only appropriate that our rematch will be the highlight of this whole competition. Make sure you don't lose before me, alright?"
When Dante and Louis passed by, Louis did not forget to provoke Dante.
In the early morning, when Dante and Shinobu entered the preparation room for the contestants, Louis was already inside. He gave Dante a provocative look, in which Dante responded by nodding and then proceeding to ignore him.
What a joke! He won't choose to talk with that arrogant guy over a pretty girl.
Judging from the tone of Louis' voice just now, he definitely held a grudge from Dante doing that.
"Trainer Louis is the son of the Flying-type Gym leader, Robert Sanchez of the Cordillera Region. If I remember correctly, isn't your Flower-Feather clan also situated in that area, Chasca?"
"Hmm, yes. I heard from our chief that Mr. Stevenson, the father of the current Flying-type Gym leader, broke ties from our clan when he was young. Sadly, I wasn't able to know the whole story behind it."
"That's too bad indeed! Well, family background aside, Trainer Louis is one of the current favorites to win this competition! Together with his Scyther, no contestant in the qualifiers has lasted for more than a minute in their hands!"
"Will Trainer Louis continue his dominating performance? Or will Trainer Darryl and his Poliwag step up to the challenge and win? Let us all see!"
After the referee's signal, Louis and Darryl released their Pokemon.
Similar to his battle with Dante, Louis started off by Scyther using Agility. Now that Dante also learned a stat-boosting move, coupled with the knowledge from the Alliance website, he was more familiar with its mechanics in this world.
Each Pokemon can boost their own stats to at most twice their original value. In addition, no stat-boosting moves can coexist at the same time. Only the effects of the latest one will apply. Of course, if the move can boost two or more stats at once, then it can be used to boost more than one stat.
The type of move also affects how much a stat is boosted. A move like Harden can increase the Defense by 10%, while Iron Defense can increase it by 20%. A Pokemon can train in order to increase more stats at once by using the same move.
As an example, according to Dante's estimate, Louis' Scyther currently has 50 stats in Speed, which is 10 higher than last month when they battled.
After it uses Agility, Scyther's Speed will reach 60. If Scyther uses Sword Dance to boost its Attack, the energy used to boost its Speed will dissipate and it will return back to 50.
The effect of the boost in stat can remain indefinitely as long as the Pokemon can sustain it. When a Pokemon's stat is boosted, the energy consumption for each move also increases.
The battle between Louis and Darryl didn't even last for more than a minute.
Louis doesn't have to worry about Scyther being paralyzed like in the battle with Pikachu. Therefore, he had no problems using physical attacks against Poliwag.
From Dante's estimate, Scyther's attack should be around 40-45.
Scyther's other stats also surpass that of Poliwag. Louis steadily commanded Scyther to suppress Poliwag with its faster speed and left the opponent no chance of a comeback.
After winning, Louis didn't show much of an expression on his face. Amidst the audiences' cheers and applause, he just took a deep look at the commentators' seat before heading back to the waiting area.
