Chapter 40: Waterfall Cave
"Aww mann, it's a pity we still can't move onto the next stage of training. Luckily, Chatot gave us an investigation mission. We're finally starting to do some real exploration!"
Dante and Pikachu are currently on the road towards Treasure Town. Because the both of them still haven't learned any stat-boosting moves, Chatot postponed their second stage of training.
Instead, he gave the two of them a task to investigate a waterfall which allegedly hid some secret. Dante remembered this mission as the 'first' official dungeon exploration of the protagonist's exploration team in canon.
The two walked past Spinda's Cafe and found it was still closed. Entering Treasure Town, Dante and Pikachu habitually checked out Kecleon's available wares. When Dante saw the Recycle move disc, his eyes lit up.
Recycle is a status type Normal move which can allow a Pokemon to either restore an item to its original state, or use its effects for the second or even third time. If a Pokemon uses an Oran Berry to restore health, by using Recycle before a period of time, the effect of health restoration can be repeatedly triggered.
It also has another, more powerful effect in the PMD world. Move discs can usually only be used by one Pokemon. However, by using Recycle, the disc can always be restored to its initial form, allowing countless Pokemon to learn the move.
Dante decisively bought the 6500 Poke Recycle move disc and the 7800 Poke they saved up from completing various tasks was reduced to 1300 Poke. Pikachu on the side has a reluctant expression seeing all their hard-earned money disappearing.
"It's alright, we'll earn that money back. You know, we'll be able to save a lot of money in the future thanks to this."
"It's okay, I believe your decision. I was just sad seeing all that money go away. Anyway, can you learn that move, Dante?"
Dante's smile froze on his face after hearing Pikachu's words. He was so focused on looking at the benefits this move can give that he forgot to consider whether they can learn this move.
Checking the description in the item menu, Dante felt weak when he saw that neither of them could learn the move.
"*Cough* so, I may have made a tiny miscalculation…"
Hearing Dante's words, Pikachu laughed out loud. Dante, on the other hand, hung his head in shame. Kecleon on the side also laughed good-naturedly after hearing what the two of them said.
"It's alright. You can return it to us if you don't need it. As an exploration team, managing your finances well is extremely important."
Hearing Kecleon's words, Dante had a grateful expression on his face. But after thinking about it for a while, he still refused. In the two weeks since they've become an exploration team, this was the first time they encountered this move disc.
The two of them can easily save up the money again. However, they may not have the chance to encounter this move disc again when they need it.
Besides, Dante will get more and more Pokemon in the future. Surely one of them will be able to learn this move.
After that whole fiasco, they finally finished sorting out everything they needed for their exploration and proceeded to the place Chatot marked on the map.
Traveling through the grasslands and up a cliff, the two of them arrived under a huge waterfall. Because the sound of water hitting the rocks was too loud, the two had to shout in order to hear each other.
"Dante! Have you seen anything with your eyes!"
"Yeah! There's a dungeon behind the waterfall!"
"WHAT!? B-behind this!?"
Because Dante already knew from the game's plot that there was a cave behind the waterfall, he easily confirmed its location by looking at the flow of energy with Copycat. Only in one area behind the waterfall was there a sign of energy flowing out.
Just by getting close to the waterfall, the both of them can feel the strong wind brought by the falling water. When Pikachu tried to put his paws under, it was almost instantly slapped away.
"A-are you sure there's something behind this?"
"Yes! A hundred percent sure!"
Pikachu only hesitated for another moment after hearing this before he steeled himself. After giving one last look at Dante for a final confirmation, he ran towards the waterfall while screaming "For tomorrow's dreamsss!!!"
With a plop, he disappeared amidst the rushing water. Dante was amused about how chuuni Pikachu is becoming. At the same time, however, he is glad how lively Pikachu is now.
Infected by Pikachu's 'war cry' Dante also ran towards the waterfall while shouting "Leeroyyyy!!!".
Dante felt the rush of water momentarily enveloping his whole body before he escaped and landed on solid ground. He had to roll for two times before he was able to stand.
"It worked! Your eyes are awesome, Dante! Hahaha, treasure, here we come!!!"
Dante, who was still exhilarated from the jump, laughed along with the excited Pikachu. After they finally calmed down, the two began to look around the cave. Stalagmites and stalactites littered the place, along with a clear pool of water on both sides of the entrance of the dungeon.
The two rested for a bit before they entered. Just like every time they entered a dungeon for the first time, the two stayed in the first room to determine the general strength of the Pokemon present.
After a while, Dante made a cursory estimate of their strength. Their stats should reach around the mid to late 30s, which is higher than the Pokemon in the second part of Mt. Bristle.
The environment was also more dangerous, with the water reaching halfway up their paws. Dante had noticed that the dungeon was more open, with less walls around the room.
However, upon taking a closer look, those 'open' spaces were composed of much deeper water. Dante even saw some Pokemon swimming freely around those parts.
Thankfully, Dante and Pikachu were already much stronger after two weeks of dungeon exploration, and Pikachu's Electric attacks are also more potent in this place filled with water.
Seeing that the two had no problem holding their own in the first room, they proceeded to head deeper into the dungeon.
Along the way, the two had to be careful of falling in the deep waters, or being dragged in. With the help of Dante's Copycat vision, it allowed him to see the flow of energy of the Pokemon that were hiding under the water, so all of their ambushes from underwater failed.
They encountered Goldeen, Dratini, Totodile, Quagsire, Azurill, Volbeat, and a Seviper on their way to the second floor. Among them, Dante was particularly surprised to see a Dratini and an Azurill.
Dratini is the initial form of the Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon Dragonite. Dragonite is a Flying and Dragon type Pokemon, and is also the first Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon in the main Pokemon game. The last time Dante checked, the price of the cheapest Dratini in the Alliance Market was 1 million!
Of course, Dante can't sell a Pokemon without a special license, so he could only reluctantly give up the idea. He had no idea about capturing a Dratini right now as it would only attract a less-than-savory attention towards himself. Instead, his attention turned to Azurill, a candidate he chose for one of his future Pokemon.
