Chapter 81 - Chapter 81: Conclusion
Chapter 81: Conclusion
“This is… the end!”
I swung my sword and beheaded the Horn Rabbit that had leaped out from the alley in the merchant district, then shook off the blood from the blade and sheathed it. Since I didn’t sense any more demon presence, all the surrounding monsters should have been dealt with.
“Reporting from the Rosch Squad! Northern sector, extermination completed!”
“Reporting from the Elliot Squad! Eastern sector, extermination completed!”
“Reporting from the Orel Squad! Western sector, extermination completed!”
Subordinates who had gone to confirm the entire capital’s situation returned one after another, and reports came in. As expected, the southern sector, where the Great Temple was located, seemed to have the most monsters. However, thanks to Ernest’s decision to immediately stop the monsters from pouring into the civilian district, the search area was less than half of the capital.
“Good work. With this, the southern sector’s extermination is also completed. Let it be known to the people of the capital! The eradication of monsters is complete!”
Taking a deep breath, I shouted loudly. Due to the sparse population on the street, my voice echoed well between the buildings. After a few seconds, cheers erupted from the surroundings, and people started coming out.
“Thank you, Sir Knight!”
“We can finally go outside!”
“Wow, the streets are littered with monster corpses! Did you really defeat this many…!”
“We need to go get food… and water…”
It seemed that this time, the winners were the shops dealing with food. People from shops selling clothes and accessories were running out of supplies and looking dizzy.
“Justin! From the reports of the subordinates, there were no casualties in the civilian district. I instructed them to head to the gate and open it.”
“Ah, the gate’s management is under the second’s jurisdiction, so I’ll leave it to you.”
The Second Knight Order, which went to confirm the civilian district, returned, and Constant reported. They would have been the first to deal with the monsters this time, so maybe he’ll be promoted from vice-captain to captain.
“Anyway, we have been made aware that the Third Knight Order are specialists in dealing with monsters this time. Everything from knowledge about monsters to how to fight them is completely different from combat against people. If the arrival of Vice Captain Luminar and the others had been a few hours later, the capital might have been in ruins by now.”
Although they were resting in shifts, it was clear from their tired faces that their minds hadn’t rested.
“We should thank Jest and Jest’s mother for this. It was Jest’s mother who informed us of the ominous signs from the capital and Jest who flew to deliver letters to the territory where the Orelle Squad was waiting on top of the mountain. It’s significant that not only letters but also messages were delivered accurately thanks to learning transformation magic.”
“Transformation magic!? That little dragon can turn into a human!?”
“Little… it’s just that he usually uses magic to shrink himself. You do know that he’s actually quite large, right? He turns into the form of a ten-year-old child.”
“Justin~!”
Perhaps because of the rumors, the person in question appeared, waving his hand. He was sitting alone on Eleanor, not holding the reins. I wonder if they can communicate telepathically, that would be enviable.
“Jest, did you safely deliver the crown prince?”
“Yeah! When I got to the gate, someone came out from inside to meet me, so I handed him over! Am I amazing?”
“Yeah, you’re amazing! Thank you.”
“Hehe.”
Jest laughed happily as I ruffled his head. If I have time tomorrow, I’ll bake Jest’s favorite cookies for him.
“Justin… is that child… a dragon?”
Oh, I forgot about Constant. He was looking at Jest with a face that seemed to have forgotten to close his eyes and mouth.
“Yeah, this child is Jest, the dragon.”
“Amazing, he looks like an ordinary human child no matter how you look at him.”
“It’s amazing, isn’t it! Since my mom taught me transformation magic! But you see~, dwarves and elves become targets, so it’s not good. Also, it’s safer to be in human form than as a small dragon, so she told me to stay in this form as much as possible.”
“Well… that may indeed be true. Jest’s mother is wise, living for two hundred years surely counts for something.”
Jest puffed up with pride at being praised by Constant. His smug expression was just like my younger brother, and it made me crack a smile involuntarily.
“Now, enough chit-chat. Constant, you still have the final gate inspection, right? We need to go to the Adventurer’s Guild and request the dismantling of the fallen monsters.”
“That’s right. The Adventurer’s Guild is in the civilian district near the gate, but those adventurer folks didn’t come out at all, maybe to avoid actual work. They said they were there to deal with monsters if they came to the civilian district, but who knows if that’s true.”
Constant spat out the words, but I thought it was understandable from my perspective.
“Adventurers like those in the capital wouldn’t stand a chance against the big shots that appeared this time. At most, they’ve dealt with escorting against thieves or small forest monsters scattered around. If anything, their presence might have been a hindrance. But I’m not going to pay for simple tasks. So, the Third Knight Order will collect the defeated monsters and take them to the guild.”
With a smirk, I chuckled, and Constant joined in.
“Hahaha, that’s a good one! They’re probably planning to earn some pocket money by collecting monster corpses! We better make it clear to the guild, though. If anyone brings in monsters that the knights have defeated, we’ll send someone to pick them up and keep them detained!”
“Yeah, and I’ll personally invite them to that underground cell I visited.”
“Grr… I-I already apologized for that!”
It was just a joke, but it seemed to hit a nerve with Constant. He protested with choked words.
“Kukuku, just kidding. Now, Third Knight Order! Let’s collect the monsters and bring them to the Adventurer’s Guild! We can’t let those bystanders off the hook easily! Make sure to confirm the types and numbers of monsters each of you brings in!”
As expected from the former troublemakers of the Third Knight Order, as soon as they realized it would be a hassle for the guild, they eagerly began their actions.
Now, I need to settle things with the guild master first. I headed to the Adventurer’s Guild with Jest on Eleanor.
