Chapter 79: The Final Battle (6)
“Ha ha, this is the second time you’ve done this, and you should think about me and Elise, who worry about you every time.”
Kael appeared out of nowhere, saving Ariana’s life and shooting her a worried glare.
“You could’ve been in trouble if it wasn’t for my explosion spell just now, and if you can’t block it with the Dark Barrier, you have no other means of evasion!”
“…….”
“Prince Eamon and Ms. Charlotte are looking for you. I’ve just signaled that I’ve found you, so they should be right around the corner.”
Kael said, waving the royal emergency receiver in his hand.
Eamon had probably given him a spare receiver to use to find me and Ariana.
Not to mention Kael, who’s already on the scene, plus Eamon and Charlotte, I’m not so much relieved that reinforcements have arrived as I am slightly worried.
Although these three people are at the level of professors in terms of pure brute force, if you ask me if they are the ones who can effectively strike the Demon King, I can say with certainty that they are not.
Arianna, even if I tried to take her away, she’d follow the Saint’s prophecy anyway, so I thought it safer to keep her with me.
Kael and the others were not told of the Demon King’s resurrection on purpose, not wanting to put them in direct danger.
It was up to me to take down that goat head myself, and any intervention by others would have only put more people in danger.
Now that things have gotten so bad, I’m going to have to get some help.
“…Thanks for the save, Kael.”
Ariana said as she stood up and brushed the dirt from her dress.
“How did you know I was here, or did you manage to search the entire Academy in this short time?”
“I went to your dormitory first, but it was just Elise and you weren’t there. I got a bad feeling, so I went straight to the center, where I felt the darkest energy.”
“Is that so?”
“You always end up in the most dangerous places when things like this happen. You were on the front lines during the Great Demon Raid in the first year, firing off dark magic.”
“Well, it was something I had to do.”
As if she had done her duty as a saint. There was no hesitation in her nonchalant reply.
“So, what are you going to do now?”
“Huh?”
“Well, there’s that dangerous-looking fellow up ahead. He’s the one responsible for all these demon outbreaks, right?”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
“…No matter how I look at it, he doesn’t seem like someone that can be dealt with by a student.”
As soon as he felt the evil aura that the guy was spitting out, Kael tilted his head and blurted out an opinion that anyone who heard it would agree with.
“Hmm. I don’t think Kael’s attacks will work against him, magic or sword.”
“And sister?”
“…Neither will I.”
Ariana’s gaze immediately shifted to me, as if she had no choice. Realizing the situation, Kael straightened up.
“Are you saying that just like the last time the high-ranking spirit went berserk, this time too, Alex will have to deal with it?”
“That’s right.”
“But Alex, you’re having a hard time approaching that guy because of the army of monsters surrounding him?”
“Exactly.”
“Haa…Why does this always happen to my sister…?”
Kael, who, like me, had been called here and there by her since he was a child, let out a sigh as if he was really tired of it.
“So if I can take care of all those demons, you can go fight that thing, Alex?”
“……yes.”
Ariana considered her brother’s question for a moment, then nodded thoughtfully before continuing.
“But each one of them is an elite soldier. Even Alex would have a hard time taking down more than three at a time.
The weaker ones would be at least full-grown orcs, and the stronger ones would be high elementals.”
“Then it doesn’t make sense that it would be just you and Alex against them.”
“I’m only saying that because I’m worried about you, Kael.”
“Fine. I honestly don’t have the confidence to take them all down by myself, but…whatever.”
Kael drew his sword from its sheath at his waist and immediately assumed a ready stance.
Though he has never betrayed my expectations, it would be a bit much to ask for this army to be left in the hands of one man.
Just as I was beginning to feel a little worried, I heard a young lady’s voice again, this time from the other direction.
“You don’t have to do this alone, little brother.”
By the time her voice reached my ears, a mist of residual heat had begun to flow through the group of monsters.
I immediately stepped out of the mist, enchanted by the magic I hadn’t seen in a long time.
Eamon’s specialty magic that vaporizes large amounts of water at high temperatures in one fell swoop, turning it into tiny droplets in the air.
The fact that it was used first meant that it would most likely be followed by a chaining spell from his fiancée.
“Arcane Wrap.”
A single snap of his fingers could be heard in the darkness, and at the same time, a huge stream of arcane energy began to flow through the mist.
“Keeeeeeeeee!”
“Eek, keeeeeeek!!!”
“Ughhhhhhhh!!!”
A horde of demons were electrocuted by the arcane magic flowing through the tens of thousands of droplets, and each one let out a painful scream as they were burned to death.
After the commotion, all that remained in the fog were a few demonic beasts on the verge of death.
“Somehow, every time I use this, I feel an inexplicable sense of guilt…”
Eamon scratched his head as he walked out of the darkness after Charlotte.
Even I, who had seen all of Ariana’s magic from the sidelines, was left scratching my head at the sight of this insane move.
I remembered that this spell had originally come from Ariana’s mind, and I was slightly relieved that she could only use dark magic.
“Ariana, I’ve been looking for you.”
“Charlotte….”
“I was just about to leave the Academy when suddenly all the street lights went out, and as if they’ve been waiting for me, a bunch of demons appear out of the darkness.
I’ve never seen such a horrible creature before, and I’m afraid I’m dreaming about a giant with multiple heads.”
Perhaps he’s afraid of Charlotte in his dreams, too.
As he watched the charred corpse giant disappear, he silently thought to himself.
“…Every single one of you is in my way. Do you think a few more flies will bring me down?”
Apparently not particularly pleased with our touching reunion, the goat-headed creature lashed out again.
It used the magic sword embedded in the ground to channel its energy, activating the darkened earth once again.
The blackened ground summoned a new army of infernals to the Academy.
It was more than twice the size of the horde of infernal beasts we had just faced.
“Attention, everyone!”
At this rate, the fight was only going to drag on for so long, so it was time to come up with a proper plan once again.
The available power had increased from the two of us to five. The first thing we needed to do was allocate our resources efficiently.
“Here’s how we’re going to assign roles to take down that goat head. It’s a rushed operation, so there may be some shortages, but I want you to follow my plan if you can.”
Fortunately, with a group of this size, it would be more than possible to take him down.
The four of them, including Ariana, were told what they had to do.
“Ariana, first.”
“Yes.”
“As before, I need you to cover me.”
So far, so good. Ariana’s dark barrier had been effective in blocking the creature’s attacks.
Though her powers would not be able to block a powerful attack like Longomyniad, the light attacks he could make in the heat of battle would be cleaned up by her magic barrier.
Now was the time to unleash her full power in an environment filled with dark magic.
“Not difficult.”
I saw Ariana nod, then shifted my gaze to Kael next to her.
“Kael, you’re next.”
“Yes, Alex. Do you think I can take on that army of demons?”
Kael gave me a determined look that told me he was ready. Instead of giving him a nod of agreement, I shook my head.
“Kael, you guard Ariana.”
“…You mean my sister?”
“Yes. First priority.”
Just in case, in the midst of battle, I or anyone else got distracted from what we were supposed to be doing.
Azazel could have used an attack like Longomyniad on Ariana once again.
No matter how low on power we became, one of us had to protect her.
The rest of us, including me, have our own body strengthening or acceleration magic, so we don’t have to worry.
Ariana, with all her tools united under one dark magic, needed someone to protect her.
As far as I was concerned, there was no one better suited to do that than Kael.
“I see.”
After hearing my explanation, Kael nodded in agreement.
All that was left was my brother and Charlotte.
“Eamon and Charlotte.”
“Yes.”
“Go ahead.”
“I apologize for entrusting you with such a burdensome task, but I’ll leave you two in charge of that army of infernal beasts.”
“All of them?”
“Yes. You two will have to take care of them all.”
It’s a bit of a daunting task, but the two of them agree to take on the demon army.
Both Eamon and Charlotte have powerful offenses of their own, and together they have a good balance of physical and magical attacks.
Moreover, their combo skills, like the Arcane Wrap from earlier, also boasted a great deal of firepower. The two of them would be able to deal with that large army.
“You’re kidding, big brother.”
“Is it too much for the two of you to handle? If so, I’ll assign Ariana to support you instead of assisting me…”
“No, not that.”
As Eamon finished speaking, blue lightning immediately began to emanate from the tip of his spear.
The friction of air and water formed a wall of lightning at the tip of his spear.
He swung his spear downward, slamming it into the demonic army advancing toward us.
“Keeeeeeeeee!”
“Guo-o-o-o-o!”
A path of blue lightning split the demon army in half.
Any demon that was in the path of even a single bolt of lightning was killed in a single blow.
“Don’t you dare make such a silly joke about how a group of children that small is too much for me and Charlotte!”
“Yes, I apologize.”
“If you understand, you need to do what you need to do. It’s your job to catch that monster.”
I nodded at their words. I grabbed my holy sword and headed straight down the path Eamon had made for me.
With trusted companions to watch my back, other troublesome matters were no longer in my realm of thought.
There was only one thing left to do, and that was to plunge the holy sword into the heart of the Demon King Azazel.
