Chapter 43
The incident had become widely known, and it was impossible to hide it even if they had wanted to.
The madam glanced at Shi Mo on the bed, who had passed out. His breathing was shallow, and it seemed unlikely he would survive.
She considered that even if Jingxiao returned, they could claim he had died of illness, and it would be enough to deceive him. Besides, although Jingxiao was not her biological son, she had raised him all these years. The mother-son relationship they shared was more significant than a dead person.
Once Madam Bai came to this realization, she ceased arguing with them and left without even glancing at them.
Fan Qingfang was thoughtful and didn’t take everyone away. She left a few people behind to guard and gather information. She wouldn’t rest easy until she was certain that Shi Mo had truly passed away.
After everyone dispersed, Shi Yi felt a chill running down his spine.
He hadn’t anticipated the extent of the cruelty exhibited by Madam Bai and Fan Qingfang, openly taking lives and behaving arrogantly as if the lives of Shi Mo and Xiao Bao were just animal in their eyes.
Pei Xing also wore a troubled expression. It appeared that the waters within the Bai Mansion were even murkier than he had initially thought. Learning from Mr. Lu that Bai Jingxiao and Shi Mo were in love added another layer of complexity to the situation. It seemed that the actions of Madam Bai and Fan Qingfang should be scrutinized more closely.
Shi Yi brought a glass of water to Shi Mo, embracing his frail body, his heart aching. “Brother, I’m sorry you had to endure this.”
Shi Mo shook his head and smiled weakly. “I can finally leave this place. It’s not too late for me to find happiness.”
After speaking, he sipped from the glass, and Shi Yi hugged him tightly, his eyes welled up with tears, filled with admiration and heartache for Shi Mo.
In truth, he sometimes felt fortunate. Despite his previous life with a terrible father, he also had an older brother who cared for him. In this life, he had been blessed with a loving older brother who protected him.
Pei Xing ruffled his hair and said, “We need to act swiftly and leave as soon as possible to minimize the danger for Shi Mo and Xiao Bao.”
In their room, the candles remained lit. Normally, when someone died in this room, the innkeeper would be quick to remove the body. However, they had been instructed to wait until the shuanger in the room had passed away.
In the middle of the night, a piercing wail echoed through the building.
Shi Yi stumbled to open the door, his body slumping to the ground in grief.
Pei Xing followed closely, embracing him, and said with a heavy heart, “Baby, the departed cannot be brought back. Don’t exhaust yourself with grief. Let’s return Shi Mo to our hometown for a proper burial.”
Getting Shi Mo out was not as simple as they had hoped. As soon as news of Shi Mo’s passing spread, Fan Qingfang brought a doctor to verify his death before allowing them to leave.
Shi Yi pretended to be overwhelmed by sorrow and even fainted. He was nestled in Pei Xing’s arms, utterly drained. They hadn’t had any water or food for hours, and they were exhausted and famished.
.
Pei Xing carried Shi Yi onto the boat, instructing others to place Shi Mo’s coffin in their room.
During the time Shi Mo had taken Xiao Bao for some fresh air at night, Shi Yi had been screaming while eating pastries, even making Xiao Bao giggle along with him. In just two days, everyone else on the boat assumed he had lost his mind.
The distance from Nanzhou to Xiangshan Village was nearly half that of Zhongzhou. They arrived on the evening of the third day. Aunt Hong and Father Song, Zhou Yan, had also returned. They were shocked when they saw the two of them carrying the coffin.
Villagers working in the fields spotted them carrying the coffin and gathered to watch.
Before they could enter the gate, Pei Xing prevented them from entering.
Over the courtyard wall, a group of villagers heard wailing from inside. It sounded like Pei Xing’s young wife. The villagers were curious about what was happening.
When people were buried the next day, almost the entire village turned out. It seemed like the news had spread, as they heard that the young shuanger’s long-lost elder brother had died of illness shortly after being found. Watching the young shuanger kneeling in front of the grave, people shook their heads and sighed at the impermanence of life.
Shi Yi was so tired from acting that he actually fainted.
Pei Xing hurriedly took him home, and once they were back, they both breathed a sigh of relief.
Shi Yi jumped down, dusted off his clothes, and hurried into the bathroom in the bedroom, shouting, “I need to wash up first.”
Pei Xing followed without a word and undressed.
They didn’t say anything, simply kissed passionately. Soon, the bathroom was filled with water and the sounds of their affection.
Pei Xing didn’t let it go too far, considering it was still daytime. When Shi Yi seemed about to protest, he stopped and pulled the person out of the bathtub, placing him on the bed and handing him clean clothes.
Shi Yi rubbed his sore waist and looked at Pei Xing, his expression puzzled. He thought about Shi Mo’s future identity, furrowed his brows, and asked, “What will happen to Shi Mo in the future? His current identity is no longer usable. How can we change it for him?”
“Don’t worry, I’ve already taken care of it.” Pei Xing said, taking out an envelope from the bedside, opening it, and showing it to Shi Yi.
Shi Yi stared at the mysterious symbols on the papers, then looked at Pei Xing, pouting, “I can’t understand this.”
Pei Xing frowned slightly, pulled Shi Yi into his arms, and said, “Didn’t you originally learn to read from Hong Luo?”
“Yes, but I forgot.” Shi Yi admitted, appearing a bit surprised.
“Forget it, I’ll teach you again another day,” Pei Xing said, holding the papers with cryptic symbols. “This is the household registration certificate I had Xie Yu obtain. The name section is still blank. I’ll fill it in later.”
.
Shi Yi took the household registration certificate to Shi Mo and asked him what name he wanted to use.
“My surname will be Lin, just like our mother. The name is Momo, which happens to be my nickname,” Shi Mo replied, gently touching Xiao Bao in his arms. A trace of sadness flickered in his eyes. “Xiao Bao also has my surname. From now on, let’s call him Lin Bao.”
“Alright! Our little baby will be called Lin Bao from now on. He will always be our precious boy,” Shi Yi smiled, pinching Lin Bao’s soft cheek and then darting back to the bedroom. “I’ll go tell Pei Xing to register at the county tomorrow.”
Shi Mo watched him with affectionate amusement, thinking of Pei Xing’s meticulousness. He was genuinely happy for him.
Meanwhile, Xiao Liu, who was clinging to the door frame, sneaked a peek at the people inside. His big, sparkling eyes locked onto Shi Mo, but he hesitated to approach.
Shi Mo waved to him, and as Xiao Liu came closer, he lovingly pinched the boy’s soft, rosy cheeks. He asked, “Xiao Liu, do you remember your big brother?”
“Yes,” Xiao Liu replied softly. His big eyes brimmed with tears as he called out, “Big brother,” and leaped into Shi Mo’s arms.
