Chapter 9: - Insufficiency
The morning after the mock battle between Tenchi and me, I engaged in my daily magic technique training with Ginko.
Perhaps due to the impact of the forceful use of “Sozuka” the previous day, the joints of my body claimed to be in pain. However, there was one notable development that outweighed these minor discomforts.
“Is it just me, or is the circulation of magic energy better than usual…?”
Indeed, it felt like the conduit I had been using to circulate magic energy had significantly expanded. Thanks to this, the transfer of magic energy was smoother, enabling me to handle even greater amounts of it.
This implied that I could potentially employ a more advanced form of “Sozuka” than I had previously. But why did this change occur all of a sudden
As if she could read my unspoken question, Ginko, in her fox form, began to explain.
“Hmm, it’s probably the result of forcefully circulating magic energy beyond your limits yesterday. It likely caused the circuits responsible for magic energy circulation to expand.”
I see. So, if I regularly push my magic energy capacity to its limits from now on, these circuits might continue to expand. However, it’s puzzling why only I seem to be experiencing this change. I don’t recall any such descriptions or explanations in the original work.
Curious, I asked Ginko, and she quickly responded.
“Well, you’ve been harboring excess magic energy to begin with. Your output hasn’t been able to keep up. Normally, it’s the other way around; people have more magic energy than they can handle. But you, on the other hand, have had an abundance of magic energy but lacked the means to forcefully expand your output. However, this is fortunate for you.”
She said this with a sly smile, much like the one she wore when plotting to kill me in a dream. To be honest, it didn’t bode well.
“Starting today, we’ll also work on expanding your circuits. I intend to push your body to the absolute limit, so you should prepare yourself.”
I figured as much. Ginko, you’re being a bit too Spartan, aren’t you? Well, becoming stronger is always a welcome outcome, so it’s a bit of a mixed blessing.
“That’s right. There’s one more thing you need to learn.”
As if she remembered something important, Ginko continued.
“I want you to learn ‘Jōrai’ as well. With your current magic energy output, there shouldn’t be any issues. Besides, you must have noticed it, haven’t you?”
I remained silent, and Ginko pointed out something that made me recall Winter Horse’s fighting style.
“Your fighting style is limited… right? You know it, don’t you?”
What Winter Horse had and what I lacked were long-range and mid-range attacks.
At the moment, all I could do was rely on my physical skills or my sword for close-quarters combat.
As a result, if the opponent had long to mid-range attack capabilities, I would find myself at a significant disadvantage in battle. Convenient victories like the one I had yesterday were not going to happen often.
“If you understand that, it’s good. With that in mind, you’ll be more motivated for this special training,” Ginko remarked.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“If you learn ‘Jōrai,’ you’ll be able to maintain Shiden in the air. That means you’ll also be able to unleash it against your enemies, of course.”
So, the massive number of Shiden spears floating around Tenchi in the original work was part of the ‘Jōrai’ spell.
“So, are you feeling more motivated now?” Ginko asked.
“Yeah, I’m getting pumped up,” I replied.
“Well, it’s going to be much tougher than anything you’ve experienced so far, but give it your all as if your life depended on it,” Ginko added ominously.
With Ginko’s disturbing words, a new menu was added to my early morning training.
