Chapter 49
“Lin Yu, why did you bring her up here?” In the car, besides Su Ning, there are two young women in their twenties. One of them looks at Su Ning with undisguised disgust and contempt. “Such a disgusting, despicable, and selfish person should be left to perish on her own!”
The driver is a bearded uncle with a cigarette in his mouth. Upon hearing this, he glances in the rearview mirror, indeed seeing Su Ning nestled motionless in Lin Yu’s arms, apparently surprised that Lin Yu brought her along. He frowns, clearly disapproving of Lin Yu’s action.
The apocalypse has come; they need teammates they can rely on, not someone like Su Ning, who could cruelly push a teammate who trusts her into a horde of zombies.
The bearded uncle spits out the cigarette butt. Though displeased, he says, “Since she’s already on the car, we can’t just throw her off. We’ll have her leave when we get to the concentration camp.”
His words carry weight. Hu Lin glares at Su Ning and says no more, but Hu Rong, sitting beside her, worries, “The concentration camp is crowded and chaotic; infected individuals could sneak in at any time. It’s very unsafe. Maybe we should just let her come with us.”
Hu Rong doesn’t particularly like Su Ning either. Having been around her for over a month, she sees Su Ning as a college student with an inexplicable sense of superiority but no real skills.
Upon hearing about Su Ning trying to push Mu Ling into the zombie horde, Hu Rong finds it hard to believe. While Su Ning is unlikable, she doesn’t think Su Ning would go that far. However, the fact that everyone around her believes it to be true keeps Hu Rong from voicing her doubts.
When they were leaving the supermarket after gathering food, nobody wanted to take Su Ning with them. She was left behind, her backpack on, pretending not to care as she walked back into the supermarket. The surrounding people’s cold indifference made Hu Rong’s heart ache. She wanted to call out to Su Ning, but she thought of herself as a burden and didn’t feel qualified to decide Su Ning’s fate.
In the end, Hu Rong silently followed the group, feeling uncomfortable as if something was stuck in her chest.
Now, fortunately, Lin Yu has brought Su Ning back. As Hu Rong breathes a sigh of relief, she speaks for Su Ning, “It’s too chaotic outside; without any special abilities, she can’t protect herself…”
“Sis, why are you speaking for her?!” Hu Lin raises her voice. “Mu Ling protected her out of kindness, and she was ungrateful and tried to push Mu Ling off the car! There were so many zombies beneath. If Li Yan hadn’t acted quickly to save Mu Ling, Mu Ling might have died, okay?”
“But we can’t just watch her go to her death!”
“Enough, stop arguing!” the bearded uncle frowns. “Su Ning, it’s not impossible for you to stay, but we won’t protect you. Keep up if you can; if you can’t, you only have yourself to blame…”
“Yes, yes, yes!” Su Ning nods hurriedly. Seeing the group of zombies gathering outside the window at the sound of the car engine, she immediately buries her head in Lin Yu’s coat, trembling with fear.
It’s too terrifying, too terrifying!
The system can never be relied upon; Su Ning is both angry and afraid.
Noticing her fear, Lin Yu gently patted her back and said softly, “I will protect you; don’t be afraid.”
Su Ning was very touched and peeped half of her face out from his coat, looked at him gratefully, and then ducked back in.
The three people in the car heard these words and were stunned. The bearded uncle looked disapprovingly at Lin Yu through the rearview mirror and said, “Lin Yu, you don’t need to do this!”
Lin Yu did not answer, but simply took out a bottle of milk, inserted a straw, and handed it to Su Ning.
He noticed her lips were a bit dry.
Indeed, Su Ning was thirsty. She clutched the milk and gulped down two big mouthfuls, leaving half the box, and offered it to Lin Yu’s lips, saying, “You drink too.” Food should be precious in the apocalypse, so she couldn’t hog it all.
Looking at her fragile eyes, filled with residual fear and eliciting sympathy, Lin Yu, who hadn’t felt thirsty, suddenly found his throat a bit dry. He took a sip and turned his head to the car window as if observing the situation of the gathering zombies outside, but his slightly reddened ears betrayed his inner feelings.
Feeling his hand tighten around her, Su Ning obediently snuggled in his arms and hugged him back. This man, who had saved her life, she decided to cling to him, like a leg accessory he couldn’t shake off.
In this haunted apocalypse, she dared not venture alone!
The intense physical activity and high stress earlier had already exhausted her. Now, relaxed and nestled in Lin Yu’s warm and reliable embrace, waves of sleepiness assailed her. She knew it wasn’t a good time to sleep, but her disobedient eyelids were dropping.
“If you’re sleepy, take a nap; they won’t catch up,” Lin Yu’s cold yet unconsciously gentle voice sounded above her head.
With no reservations, Su Ning closed her eyes and fell into a slumber.
Unbeknownst to her, a pair of eyes in the passenger seat had been silently watching her since she got into the car.
The car sped quickly, and after shaking off the large group of zombies, several cars turned one after another into a villa surrounded by tall walls. This was a place they had found earlier for temporary rest.
They had blocked the unlocked gate with large stones before leaving, and now the stones were still there, indicating that no one had come, and there shouldn’t be any zombies inside. But for safety’s sake, one person from each car had to get out and check.
The bearded uncle glanced at Lin Yu, who looked back impassively and made no move to get up, as Su Ning was still sound asleep in his arms.
The ever-silent co-driver, Yan Zihao, suddenly smiled and said, “Let me go.”
“But your hand!” Hu Rong worriedly said, “What if there’s danger inside…”
“It shouldn’t be a big problem.” Yan Zihao lifted his hand, wrapped in a splint, and moved it a few times, “It’s been healing for over a week; it should be almost better now.”
Lin Yu slightly furrowed his brows, glanced at Su Ning, who was sleeping soundly in his arms, and really couldn’t bear to wake her. He pursed his lips and said flatly, “I’ll go.”
After gently placing Su Ning on the seat, he turned to the bearded uncle before getting out of the car and said, “Take care of her.” Although the car was safe, there was still a certain risk. Seeing the bearded uncle nod, Lin Yu then turned and walked toward the villa.
After Lin Yu had gone far, Hu Lin finally couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong with Lin Yu? Didn’t he ignore everyone before? Why is he suddenly so attentive to her?”
The bearded uncle shook his head and lit a cigarette, opening the window to exhale the smoke. His gun was held steady, aimed at zombies trying to climb over the villa’s wall.
Yan Zihao glanced at Su Ning through the rearview mirror and then couldn’t take his eyes off her.
His face darkened, feeling that he might know the reason.
So beautiful, she must be deliberately seducing him…
He traced her facial contours in the mirror, lingering on her moist, tender lips, his Adam’s apple unconsciously moving up and down. Yan Zihao unscrewed a bottle of water and gulped down a large mouthful, but it still didn’t alleviate the dry feeling in his mouth.
Staring at Su Ning’s dark eyes, he thought, how had he not noticed before that she was so much to his liking?
He’d miscalculated, almost letting such a beauty fall into the zombies’ mouths. Fortunately, Lin Yu had saved her in time. However, thinking about her intimate dependence on Lin Yu, Yan Zihao found it unbearable and felt that Lin Yu was extremely annoying.
A person came out of the villa’s entrance, waving to signal that they could come in.
The bearded uncle opened the car door first, took his gun, and walked out, signaling to Hu Rong and Hu Lin, “Wake her up and go in together; I’ll check outside the front wall.” Then he turned and followed the others with guns, spreading out toward the wall.
As Hu Rong was about to reach out and tap Su Ning’s shoulder, Hu Lin pulled her hand and dragged her out of the car, “Sis, why are you so concerned about her?! I don’t want to go in with her; if others see, they might think we’re close to her!”
“Hu Lin, really!” Hu Rong pulled back her hand, and just as she was about to return to the car to wake Su Ning, Yan Zihao rolled down the car window and looked at them, smiling warmly, “You go on ahead; I’ll wake her up.”
“Alright, alright.” Hu Lin quickly nodded, pulling Hu Rong, who seemed to want to say something, towards the villa, “Sis, let’s hurry over! Otherwise, there might not be any rooms left, and I don’t want to sleep on the floor!”
Thinking about a previous experience with sleeping on the floor and encountering a mouse, Hu Rong also didn’t dare hesitate and immediately ran towards the villa with Hu Lin.
Yan Zihao, meanwhile, calmly got out of the car and went to the back seat. He closed the car door, and the window was raised.
Lin Yu would undoubtedly be pulled away to inspect the perimeter wall and wouldn’t be back for a while. Yan Zihao had plenty of time.
He laid her flat on the seat with one hand and was just about to unfasten the top button of her collar when someone knocked on the car window.
Yan Zihao looked up, startled to see Li Yan.
Li Yan’s car was at the front, so what was he doing here?
His icy eyes glanced at Yan Zihao’s hand through the car window. Li Yan opened the door, his voice as cold as ice, “What are you doing?”
The corner of Yan Zihao’s mouth curled into an enigmatic smile. He placed his hand on Su Ning’s waist and slowly stroked upward, arching an eyebrow, “What do you think?”
The ice in Li Yan’s pale brown eyes seemed as though it could freeze him, and Yan Zihao watched as a layer of ice formed over his hand from the white fog. Well, it wasn’t an illusion; it had actually frozen.
Yan Zihao’s eyes also cooled, the skin at the frozen area turned red and heated up, melting the ice into water that flowed down his skin. He withdrew the hand from her waist, and a burst of fire erupted from his palm, flying towards Li Yan’s face, causing him to quickly retreat several steps to avoid the fireball.
Li Yan formed three long ice spikes with his hand. Yan Zihao glanced at Su Ning, who was lying in the car, and quickly kissed her on the mouth before jumping out of the vehicle, pulling the door closed to avoid accidentally harming her.
The ice spikes were aimed at his eyes, stomach, and injured hand. Yan Zihao didn’t dodge but formed three fireballs in response, directly meeting the three ice spikes…
The alternating hot and cold environment woke Su Ning, and she rubbed her eyes to see a layer of ice forming on the car window. In no time, the ice melted, replaced by a fireball. Su Ning’s eyes widened, and she quickly retreated to the other side of the car door.
What was going on?!
And where was her “thigh” that she wanted to cling to? Where had it gone?!
It couldn’t be, it couldn’t be. With her no ideal discrimination type, the “thigh” couldn’t possibly abandon her.
Even though she thought this way, her heart was still beating uneasily.
Was it failing? No, no, her no ideal discrimination type had no time limit!
With only herself in the car and not daring to open the door and get out, Su Ning hugged her arms, enduring the alternation of cold and hot, feeling both frustrated and tearful.
The end of the world was not only hailing ice but also raining fireballs. It was terrifying!
Were they going to leave her here to fend for herself?
She didn’t want that at all!
Upon meeting only once without even speaking, the main character’s negative affection for her turned into a positive 90, with a love value that directly broke through 80. The supporting character’s affection soared to 99, and if one could detect the supporting character’s love value, it would probably be no less than 80 as well.
1414 suddenly understood why the administrators didn’t abandon her, even though she caused the love value in three worlds to reset to zero, leaving a three-hundred-year blank period in those worlds.
Such a powerful tool would be a waste not to use.
1414 was just a love value collection system, carefully selected by the administrators and assigned to Su Ning. Other systems couldn’t extract any love value from her. Only 1414 could barely get a little, about one-tenth of the love value.
The worlds the administrators planned to send her to were generally ones with bug systems. If the main characters were preempted by bug hosts and ordinary conquerors failed, they would send her in.
Anyway, these love values captured by the bugs couldn’t be collected, so they let her go there and do as she pleased.
The administrators did this mainly inspired by Anna, who had always been a headache-causing bug host. However, in the last world, she was overshadowed by Su Ning. No matter how tricky the problem Anna solved, she only received a ‘Not bad, keep up the good work’ from the main character, Luo Ao. Anna’s almost blood-spitting expression was made into an emoticon by the administrators, and they reveled in it daily!
The administrators believed that to collect a whole set of ‘Top Ten Bug Host Blood-Spitting Expression Packs,’ they couldn’t do without the reasonable use of the ultimate weapon, Su Ning.
System reward points were generally measured by the love value collected from the main characters. Since only 10% of the love value could be drawn from Su, the reward points were also only 10% of what a regular host would earn. Additionally, since the accompanying system required an undiscounted 10% of the total points for an upgrade, Su Ning really couldn’t get any points.
If she found out, it would certainly demoralize her, so even though the system assigned her tasks, it didn’t require her to complete them methodically; casual effort was fine.
Just placing her near the main characters might unknowingly accomplish the task, just like this time!
Hearing 1414’s voice, Su Ning angrily said, “Why didn’t you continue hibernating? You unqualified, counterfeit product! Even 444 is a hundred times better than you!”
Su Ning: “……”
The car door was suddenly opened from the outside, and Lin Yu stood there, looking expressionlessly at her, who was huddled in a corner of the seat, hugging her legs.
“Thigh!” Su Ning almost cried out, immediately moving to jump onto him, clinging to him like an octopus, “I won’t sleep anymore! Never again! Don’t leave me alone here, wuwu!”
Lin Yu held her with one hand, patting her back to comfort her.
It’s okay, it’s okay, it didn’t fail.
For double insurance, since this was a place where one might lose their life at any moment, Su Ning decided to use his ideal “character,” being docile and clingy!
With both hands wrapped around his neck, Su Ning’s tone was soft and insecure, with a hint of pleasing in her grievance: “I’ll give you everything in my backpack, I can find food for myself, I can take care of myself, just let me follow you, don’t leave me, okay?”
“I didn’t leave you.” Lin Yu had her sit in the seat, picked up her shoes that had bounced off under the seat, and placed them at her feet, saying calmly, “Put on your shoes, I’ll take you to a room to rest.”
“Mm-hmm.” Su Ning quickly nodded, stuffing her feet into her shoes, holding his arm as if afraid he’d vanish the moment she wasn’t looking.
Lin Yu, however, while looking down at her, noticed the undone buttons of her shirt, with a hint of her bra barely visible, protecting her large breasts…
He hurriedly looked away, wanting to remind her but not knowing what to say, and also unable to reach out to button it for her. Lin Yu thought for a moment, then directly took off his own coat and draped it over her shoulders, saying somewhat uncomfortably, “It’s cold, button up your shirt.”
His coat had no buttons, so what was there to fasten?
When Su Ning looked down and saw her wide-open collar, her face instantly turned bright red. She hurriedly held her collar together with her hands and no longer clung to his arm, sitting in the seat and too embarrassed to even lift her head. She mumbled, “Did you see everything?”
“It wasn’t intentional.” Her not clinging to him made him feel a bit uneasy. Lin Yu tentatively touched her hair, his tone filled with an apology, “I’m sorry.”
Such a restrained man, not thinking about taking advantage of her at every turn, was simply too rare!
She had decided on him!
Su Ning lifted her head, grasped his hand, and guided it to her face. Her bright eyes, filled with hope and anticipation, gazed at him, “Then you have to take responsibility for me… You can’t leave me behind in the future…”
“Okay.” Lin Yu’s light brown eyes looked directly into hers, and he nodded seriously, “I will take responsibility for you. I won’t leave you.”
“Mm.” Su Ning nodded emphatically, reaching out to cling to his arm again. She looked outside the car, noticing the ice shards and fire-scorched marks on the ground. It would surely be uncomfortable to step on them.
Spreading her arms, she gave Lin Yu a sweet and adorable smile, “Carry me!”
…
Li Yan and Yan Zihao had stopped fighting as soon as they saw her jump into Lin Yu’s arms from the car, and both of their faces darkened.
So, what had they been fighting for all this time?
···
At dinner, everyone gathered in the living room.
When Su Ning appeared behind Lin Yu, she received quite a few disdainful and hateful glances. It was clear that her original self was not well-liked here.
But at the same time, there were several pairs of eyes filled with inexplicable heat, firmly glued to her. Su Ning clung tightly to Lin Yu’s sleeve, knowing that those gazes were probably from those who had seen her eyes earlier.
Mu Ling, who was folding paper on the sofa, glanced at Su Ning lightly. She had seen Su Ning wave for help earlier and thought that she would recognize the reality and choose to give up the task, but surprisingly, she was quite persistent and followed to seek help. However, this was the apocalypse, and apart from Lin Yu, who was willing to save her, no one wanted to carry a teammate who had no significant help and was hard to trust.
But since Su Ning was not willing to give up, then let her face the cruelty of the apocalypse, and let her know that sometimes people could be more terrifying than zombies.
She really loved teaching and teasing novice hosts!
Heh heh~
Mu Ling looked at everyone with concern and said, “We couldn’t find any fresh meat or vegetables in the supermarket, so this time we only prepared instant noodles and some canned food. Everyone will have to make do for now. Tomorrow we will head to the concentration camp to exchange for some gasoline, then head to the military base…” The concentration camp was a good place. What excuse would she find to leave her there?
The living room was large, with two long tables set up. In front of each person was a can of meat, a bowl of instant noodles, and a bottle of milk. Su Ning sat next to Lin Yu, and as she picked up her chopsticks to eat, she noticed the man on her right with a bandage on his hand was watching her intently.
Su Ning ignored him, focusing on her meal.
“Is that enough for you?” Yan Zihao smiled warmly, saying, “I have a very thick and large sausage, would you like some?”
What the fuck! Su Ning almost spat out her noodles. She moved her chair closer to Lin Yu and clung to his right hand, her attitude very clear; she was taken!
Lin Yu switched his chopsticks to his left hand and coldly glanced at Yan Zihao. Seeing that he really took out a sausage as thick as an arm and offered it to Su Ning, he chuckled, “Have some extra food. I can’t finish it by myself.”
Su Ning shook her head. She not only didn’t respond, but she didn’t even look at him. Instead, she moved even closer to Lin Yu.
Yan Zihao’s smile remained, but his black eyes darkened.
His face wasn’t the only one darkening. Li Yan, sitting across from Su Ning, had the same expression, along with…
“Li Yan? Brother? Aren’t you going to eat?”
When Mu Ling noticed that the two men next to her were staring at Su Ning without moving, she finally realized the seriousness of the situation.
