Chapter 54: Fiancee of a stranger
(Erriador–City of Vernila)
"Officer, have you found her yet?" May Mae swallows her anxiousness. Her frame leaning forwards on the table—behind it sat a police officer in a navy blue uniform.
Her husband sighs seeing his wife in a miserable state.
They had travelled to Erriador on the first day of the year. More than the comfort of home and living the pleasure the New year wing it's way, they favoured being with their daughter like niece. Hopefully wishing to surprise her on the propitious day.
May could not help, but smile amusedly at the thought of her dear niece being so perplexed and delighted uncovering them in her presence.
Oh how she wished to see the sensations swimming in her orbs, which spoke thousands of sentiments bubbling in her heart.
May was left heartbroken, when she and her husband arrived at Neva's apartment, discovering the door to her home was in fact, locked.
Just then when they stood and wandered about her whereabouts, the owner of the apartment building passed by. When they approached her, they felt fortunate enough to have stumbled upon the owner of Neva's residence.
To their misfortune, she did not have any information they needed to dissipate their unease. The worry that May had kept burying this whole time, started to show on her face.
Later, the cops where involved after they informed them and filed a missing report.
The officers began their investigation. They priorly interrogated the couple about the last scene she was seen in. The last conversation they had with her. Information about her friends, family, acquaintances.
May and Niall disclosed everything they know of and could think of. Including the apartments owner disclosure, about the two doors of the building having been closed in the last six days.
Sure to say, a young man had been missing the similar count of days Neva was.
When they put questions on the building owner, it was revealed that the young neighbour of Neva's had been living with her for weeks, rejecting his own apartment just six strides away.
As they examined the surveillance cameras around the apartment compound, they found the vanished footage of the evening of 26th december suspicious.
The investigator explored the Vernila University, Neva currently is taught in.
They summoned her friend Emma, who May could only recall of.
May needed to talk to Emma in person, the only company her dear niece was familiar with. As Emma arrived at the police department, the officers properly interrogated her. They found out Emma herself, has not been able to contact neither Neva nor Rhett.
Emma unveiled that Neva was in a sincere relationship with Rhett Lei. The information which shook the core of May's. For a difinite minute, her mind could not function properly.
Niall although a little taken aback, more than he previously imagined if he ever found Neva dating a Man found himself caressing his subconscious wife. Having her take a deep breath and gulp down the figures that her naive and innocent niece is genuinely dating; the detail which did not seem to sink down her chest well.
Subsequently, Emma revealed that on the eve of Christmas morn, Rhett proposed Neva to marry him, the offer of hand that Neva could not refuse to hold.
Neva was now a fiancee of someone they never knew, or seen of. May could hardly breathe with the weight of such heavy information. Niall was dissapointed in her.
The first dissapointment their perfect niece had them face.
Neva's parents like aunt and uncle, felt their heart pierced for their dear Neva, did not even deem them worthy to share such important fragment of her life.
As the officers continued the investigation, Emma revealed their last conversation, and the detail that Rhett was occasionally abscend for days due to his bussiness overseas. Of course, it was never divulged that Rhett was a secret agent of Erriador intelligence services. Dedicating his life for the peace of the nation.
But right at this moment, all fingers were pointed at Rhett. Had he abducted Neva?
The matter of this missing complaint was now twisting to be grim, and serious.
May insisted on staying at the police department until Neva was located.
Nevertheless, seeing no advancement in the case Niall could only make her agree through calm reassurances, he hardly could console her with.
They spent the night at a hotel, and this day was the second of January.
With no sleep the whole night, with all her fears turning to be true, she felt she could never be able to explain or apologize for her negligence regarding her niece to her late brother and sister-in-law. The real guardians of Neva; they who warmed up her cold and vacant arms.
As the sun dawned they rushed back to the police department, not bothering to pay heed to the information the officer gave that: Neva has still not be found, when they called right after they awoke.
(Current Scene)
"Officer have you found her yet?"
Her sudden presence, has the nonchalant officer look up to meet her gaze.
"Was it Neva Mae?" He probes to which May nods eagerly.
"Not yet. We will inform you when we locate her whereabouts." The officer says, as his eyes lowers to where he previously was peering at.
The muted clicking noise of keyboard resounds, as the officer gets invested in surveying the documents reflecting in the computer screen.
"When will that be?" May sternly asks him, he meets her eyes just then a ring of a telephone interrupts their supposed conversation.
"Excuse me," The officer picks up the phone and holds it near to his ear, greeting the person on the other side formally, discussing a certain subject.
"Let's go honey, they'll do their job." Niall voices his thoughts, making May sigh and shake her head.
"No, not yet. Not until they find her." Adamant, May stays static to her ground.
The officer places back the phone in it's place, looking up, he scans the couple.
"We will surely find Miss Neva Mrs Mae, rest assured." With those words, he pretends as if the both of them suddenly faded away as he gets engrossed in his computer screen.
May angered slams her hands in the table, causing Niall to widen his eyes at her sudden outburst.
"Rest assured your mother! My Neva has been missing for a whole freaking week! Do your damn job properly!!" May loses her cool, she could not contain her boiling anxiousness which had been tampered to form agression.
"May calm down..." Niall grabs her shoulders. They gained some displeased eyes from the officers around the room, because of the commotion May created.
May straightens her posture, holding her forehead, stressed.
"You cannot cause a ruckus here Mrs. Mae. I can put you behind the bars if this attitude of yours continues." The officer warns her, his face as expressionless as ever.
May exhales a deep breath out. She lowers her gaze. "I'm sorry officer. This won't happen again—please, just find my niece." May bites her bottom lips, shameful of her act.
"We will. You have to leave the department for now." He declares, gazing at Niall.
Niall nods his head. "We are leaving sir. Do inform us if you find anything." He searches May's eyes.
"Shall we head out love?" He utters, having May link their eyes. She nods, agreeing to calm herself, before she goes insane with worry.
