Intern at S.T.A.R. Labs

Chapter 15: Chp 15 : The Offer

"Um manager what do you think of the floorplan , we have adjusted the copper wirings and fuses for the internal generators which area should we tackle next?" the random engineer asked Adrian the noob manager.

Adrian sitting straight up as he was slouched reading the notes Hartley had left him. Now shifting through the pages to find an answer for this man's question.

" Yeah so, just a sec. Um.. after the fuses , maybe start working on the.. hmm. Yeah the cells on the inner walls." Adrian proud to have an answer.

" We don't handle the cells, we're just here for the electrical". The man replied.

'Shit What the fuck do I say now?! Fucking Hartley giving me this stupid manager job' he thought as his smile faded faster than light.

"Stop pulling the kid's leg Larry, he just got here." Another man behind him spoke , he looks older and definitely experienced.

" He's just messing with you kiddo, don't take it to heart."

" It was funny, that look on his face. Most managers we work with just sit and order is to work faster or ask when will it be done. " Larry said.

" That's probably why Rathaway stuck this to you, he doesn't like menial jobs or working with others either".

" He's definitely a character. Can you tell me more about him mister.. ?" Adrian asked the old man.

"Harry"

"Larry and Harry huh. Did you two come in a bundle deal." Adrian joked but the other two didn't laugh and now they just stared at each other.

" Haha nice one kid, haven't heard that one since yesterday " Larry hissed .

"He's not fond of that joke. Anyway about Rathaway, he's definitely a character. Rich brat, studied abroad, chosen by Dr. Wells himself, he's basically the biggest prodigy child in S.T.A.R. Labs, at least that's the way he carries himself. "Harry said.

"I see and while working with him must be tough". Adrian sighed.

" Well that's the thing , as soon as he perceives as good help he does get mellow". Harry added.

" That's just with you Harry, ain't never had a conversation with that man without him screaming at me". Larry complained.

" Well junior you've been here for maybe a year, give it time. Even this kid has been probably been here for longer than you". Harry laughed.

" Nah, I just got here 2 weeks ago. Fresh intern in the fabrication department." Adrian said proudly. Silence fell across the pipeline as everyone had stopped working and were in awe at what was said.

" You're NEW here? Then do you know Rathaway personally?" Larry questioned as he was perplexed.

" Nope, also met him a day or so after I got here."

" It's surprising that he isn't rude towards a newbie. One of your men got chewed out for not putting his tools in the box by Rathaway , that guy took two days off after that. He's almost as scary as Dr. Wells sometimes."

"Huh , guess I got lucky and got spared from his tyranny." Adrian shrugged.

' I would mention our Sunday alone but it feels too personal to share'. Adrian thought staying shut.

" Anyway reading books will only get you so far, why not help us and learn a few things. Getting your hands dirty is the best for an engineer ya know". Harry added.

" Ain't that true . Let's get started." Adrian slammed the book down and got up to do some actual work. He also left his phone behind. Unbeknownst to everyone his phone rung a few minutes later , it was his friend John Smith. The call went ignored as Adrian was busy with work. Going to his side now.

" Guess he is busy with work. Could have used his advice right now, I'll just send a text too in case". John said as he was in the hospital room besides his mother. She looked frail and pale, if the heart monitor was not beeping you couldn't tell if she was alive or not. The doctor just told him the bad news and any solution to her condition was experimental and theoretical at best. Of all his friends he relied on Adrian the most.

John held his mother's hand right but gentle.

" Just hang in there maa, just a little longer". He said choling on his tears.

A nurse came in to check on his mother. John wiped his tears and cleared his throat. The nurse checked on his mother every few hours and changed her IV when necessary.

" Nurse, is my mother going to be okay?" John asked holding back his tears.

" It's a tough thing to say. We always tell our patient's relatives , either pray to God or to the doctors." Nurse replied.

" Heh, God. My mother here prayed every waking moment of her life, always saying God has a plan for us all, that he brings light, follow him and you shall never suffer. So why is she like this now?". John now sad and angry.

" Her faith may have been strong, but maybe her prayers never rung on the correct ears." Nurse added.

" Wh- What do you mean Nurse?" John asked wiping his nose.

" You know, the Doctor here are always busy because they have so many patients, so many people asking for their help. What do you do if that happens?" Nurse asked John.

" This is the best hospital in the city, of course it would be busy. And it's the doctors job to save lives, it shouldn't matter if the queue of patients is small or long".

" Well that's the thing son, when our doctors deem any patient non-urgent chances are they get transferred to another hospital. Now the other hospital isn't bad, it just doesn't have the same fame. The doctors there are just as qualified if not more If I do say so". Nurse yapped.

" Is my mother going to get transferred nurse? She is barely hanging on and you want to move her in this condition!!?". John screamed at the nurse.

" You are justified in your anger son but like I said, the other hospital isn't as bad. I can assure you, heck I myself bought a little girl to them and they healed her in no time". Nurse replied calming him down.

" I need to think about this, could you please give me a moment."

" Sure son, I'll be around".

" Sorry, I didn't get your name nurse."

" It's Catherine ."
