Chapter 74: Imperfect memory

Arriving at White River Watch I realized my memory was imperfect. It was Graywinter Watch that held Froki's bow. White River Watch was where the iron hand gauntlets were. I stood over the two bandits I had just killed. Viree looked at me, "So? this isn't the place."

I sighed, "Yeah. Its fine though."

I had crafted Viree her own set of armor, but maybe she would want the ironhand gauntlets. We walked into the cave and were greeted by a blind man. "Eh? Who's there? Rodulf, that you?"

Rodulf was one of the bandits we killed outside. Ulfr the blind watch man of Winter River Watch was actually the Bandit Chief's Uncle, also known as Hajvarr Iron-Hand. I thought for a moment and shrugged. I pointed to Viree, "Knock him out."

Ulfr jumped at my words. Viree was effective though and slammed a fist into his face. Ulfr flew backwards in his chair and I could see his nose broke. I gave a thumbs up to Viree, "Good Girl, Who's agood girl. You are! Yo-"

She punched me in the shoulder. I winced a little as Viree was a little too strong for playful punches. I delegated and left Viree to carry Ulfr along as a hostage. I grabbed Ulfr's blank book, however to my surprise it wasn't blank like one would expect. Several small grooves were etched into the paper.

I shrugged and pocketed the collectible. Taking out Sable Wave I moved forward into the cave. Surprisingly I didn't find anyone in the next room, or the room after that. I finally found two bandits near a makeshift alchemy table. I jumped out of stealth and as they noticed me it was too late. I sliced straight through one bandit and into the next.

Sable Wave cut through people like they were butter. I couldn't tell if I was getting critical hits or not. Viree looked at me, "Can you make me a weapon like that?"

I gave a shrug, "I have no idea. The edge is so sharp, especially after I did a little extra work on it." I had used Alchemic Shift on Sable Wave. The spell worked as intended, but it had little effect. It did make the edge sharper.

Viree stared at me, "You don't need to brag."

I smiled and walked forward and exited the dungeon and back into skyrim. A man stood looking out toward Whiterun. He turned around, "That my Uncle?"

He was looking at Ulfr who was slung over Viree's Shoulder. I responded, "Yeah, you want to turn yourself in dead or alive?"

He sighed, "You know I didn't plan on becoming a bandit. Except they treat the blind worse than cattle. Even as a bandit those that joined us treated my uncle badly. That braindead Rodulf constantly played pranks on Uncle."

Hajvarr sighed, "We lived in Riften originally you know? Moved to Whiterun, but the travel was rough since Uncle was blind. Couldn't leave him behind though, he took care of me when my parents died."

Viree looked at me, and I shrugged. "Let him monologue, its good karma."

Hajvarr gave me a nod, "Eh, I hear it is. My parents needed karma like that. They were thieves for the guild in Riften."

I asked, "Were you rejected from Whiterun?"

Hajvarr laughed, "Apparently I looked like my dad and wouldn't you know it he had quite the bounty on his head. They tried to grab us at the gates. We escaped, found this cave, you know the rest."

Viree pointed at him, "So are we fighting or?"

I looked at Hajvarr, "Yeah, are you gonna fight?"

Hajvarr just looked at me with a sad look, "No, honestly I'm just done. I was gonna kill Rodulf and head west."

Viree looked at me, "Wait, didn't you want skilled fighters? Why not make a contact like you did with me?"

I thought about it, I didn't really need to trust him. Viree's contract was fake, but... I had prepared a few already written contracts. After all it was hard to trust every person that chose to be a follower. "Smart idea, would you like a treat?"

She grumbled a little and Hajvarr looked between us. "You want me to work for you?"

I shrugged, "Like she said, looking for some skilled fighters for a guard position. I'm planning on a mining operation and I don't want bandits to raid the place I acquire."

Hajvarr looked at his Uncle, "Will you hire both of us? and what is this contract."

I took out the magic contract, "Prewritten, if you can't read I'll read it to you. Yes I will hire both of you, but your Uncle will need to sign a contract too. I don't care if he's blind we can cut a finger and drip blood on the paper for all I care. The contracts are magic and bind you to their rules, fail to follow through and well... for these contracts you get a magically induced heart attack."

Hajvarr hesitated as he grabbed the contract from me. He quickly read through it and I smirked at Viree. "Look even bandits can read."

This time she punched me, "You seem extra today."

I smirked, "Just some weird dreams. Nothing major..." Viree knew I wasn't being truthful. She made no comment on it though.

Hajvarr responded, "Yeah, Yeah I'll sign. Where do we go?"

I thought about and sighed, "Viree you think you can take the both of them back to Whiterun to clear their bounties?"

Viree nodded, "Didn't you take me on this adventure for something specific?"

I did, but it was just an experiment. I knew Froki's bow was guarded by some Trolls. I wanted to test their regenerative abilities. "It's fine, it was just an experiment. We can do it anytime really."

Viree nodded, "Okay, good luck."

Hajvarr signed the contract and a blue light shined over him. With that we were ready to leave. Hajvarr hesitated though, "Wait! Let me put on my gauntlets."

He grabbed a set of steel gloves from a table. I assume those were the iron-hand gauntlets. Do I be greedy? Nah, it only fortified two-handed weapons. When we went back through the makeshift dungeon Ulfr began waking up so I took out another contract and had Ulfr sign it.

"With the contracts done we just need to clear up the bounties. Once that's done I want you to head back toward Riften. A place called Lost-Prospect Mine. If you get there before us just set up a camp. I'll be recruiting an argonian and possibly a witch to help with the mine operation."

Hajvarr nodded, "Gotcha."

Ulfr groaned, "My head still hurts."

Viree pushed them forward, "Let's hurry up, I'm hungry."

With that I was alone and I headed to the right place. Graywinter Watch was underneath the ritual stone. I looked at the ritual stone first, I could see a necromancer a the top. With a shrug I summoned a flaming familiar.

The wolf ran up the hill and exploded. The skeletons that protected the necromancer died on impact. The necromancer was blown backwards and off the hill. I found him crawling away, his eyes went wide as he saw me. His robes were burned away and he was struggling to breath. I drove a sword through his stomach and he went limp.

I wonder where all the necromancers come from? I walked down the hill and found Graywinter Watch. Inside was two trolls, I didn't bother with stealth. The trolls charged me and I sliced off one of their arms. The second Troll swung at me with a downward strike. I went to cut through its arm, but it stopped half way.

So the first strike was a critical one. The arm hung limp though and the Troll roared. Its buddy? Mate? Lunged at me with its whole body. I stabbed Sablewave straight into its skull. It slumped and I pulled out my sword. The other troll... It had ran. I followed it into the back of the cave where it guarded a small ugly child. I held up a hand and set the Troll on fire. The flames spell was weak, but trolls were weak to fire. It blocked the fire with its whole body while charting at me.

I sliced through the troll killing it. Finally I looked at the small troll child. It was asleep? I could kidnap it, that's how the Dawnguard makes their armored trolls. Actually, why don't I just sell it? The troll child must be a newborn or something telling that it was still sleeping. I looked around the cave and picked up a barrel. Looking inside was some apple that i dumped.

They were long since spoiling and I grabbed the Troll Child and threw it in the barrel. Closing the barrel I only paused to stab a breathing hole into the thing. Second I moved back to the troll corpses. Using harvest the trolls were stripped of their fat and bones.

"Now for Froki's bow." I looked around the cave, checking the corpses of some half eaten bandits. Finally I found the bow buried under some plants. It seems it got flung away when the bandits fought the trolls. The bow required to be restrung, but it still glimmered with an enchantment.

"Hmm, now what?" Talking to myself I had to wonder what I should do. I still had an entire day until we leave for Helgen. With a shrug I took at a skill book I have yet to read and began the walk back toward whiterun.
