Chapter 40 - I
Being stared at by Liu Fang, Jing Xingzhi sensed an underlying desire someone wanted to bite him. However, upon closer inspection, he realized Liu Fang wasn’t gritting his teeth.
Did he misinterpret it? Jing Xingzhi wondered, his eyes feigning innocence.
Liu Fang exhaled, observing the wallet filled with money. “How much pocket money do you need per month?” he asked.
Jing Xingzhi considered and replied, “I’ll be eating and drinking at home, won’t go out much. two taels should be enough.”
He felt he had no significant expenses since Liu Fang handled all household matters.
” I usually have some money on me, enough for a snack on the way, if you wanted something just tell me.” Jing Xingzhi added casually.
Liu Fang then took out a small and cute golden melon seed from his pocket and said, “Here, Xiao Xingzhi, take the pocket money given by your Fang-ge!”
Jing Xingzhi playfully flirted verbally, making Liu Fang feel a bit at a disadvantage. As the older one, Liu Fang thought calling himself an elder brother was justified. However, he didn’t anticipate Jing Xingzhi, three years younger, but had the tall body.
Jing Xingzhi held Liu Fang around the waist, gesturing at their height difference and teasing, “Xiao Fangfang, with your small body, you still want to be big brother? You should call me da-ge; Jing da-ge will treat you to food and drinks!”
Liu Fang patted his pocket. “Do you still want the pocket money?”
Jing Xingzhi feigned shock, “Wow, you’re still deducting my pocket money! Fang-ge is so cruel, and my life is hard…” They bantered, familiar with each other’s antics.
However, Liu Fang blushing at being called “Fang-ge” by Jing Xingzhi.
Jing Xingzhi noticed it and playfully, he blew into Liu Fang’s ears, asking, “Fang-ge, why are you blushing?”
Liu Fang stared at Jing Xingzhi with moist eyes, unable to assert any authority. Jing Xingzhi’s teasing softened him, making him feel defenseless against this man.
Jing Xingzhi jokingly threatened, “I call you Fang-ge, but you still ignore me. If you don’t call me, I’ll treat you like a child and buy you candy.”
Liu Fang retaliated by tickling him, causing Jing Xingzhi to jump in surprise.
Liu Fang saw Jing Xingzhi jumping away, and exclaimed, “Why did you run away? Come here quickly, let Fang-ge show his love for you!”
Jing Xingzhi stood a couple of steps away, smiling and pointing at Liu Fang. “How do you know I’m ticklish? I’ve never seen you tickle me before! You’re scheming, scheming bad thing! Xiao Fangfang, you hide it too well.”
Liu Fang proudly looked at him and said, “I know more about you than you think.”
.
At night, Jing Xingzhi and Liu Fang playfully bickered and enjoyed themselves in their small home, creating a different atmosphere.
Meanwhile, in another place, Shen Fang’s staff kept busy, and only in the evening did he give Wang Xiang and Tan Xingwang some advice.
After a session of punishment, both of them had sore buttocks, and every move seemed agonizing.
Wang Xiang, with a weaker physique, endured a lot and found it difficult to walk afterward.
Tan Xingwang, considering their shared hardship, offered Wang Xiang a helping hand amidst the yamen’s urging.
They left the county government office together, and Wang Xiang, in pain, commented, “You’re lucky; someone will come to pick you up. I’m miserable. I live alone and it’s quite far. I don’t even know how to get back to the West District.”
Realizing he might have said the wrong thing, Wang Xiang glanced at Tan Xingwang with embarrassment, observing his expression.
Tan Xingwang, facing a difficult situation, had a pale face. He saw Wang Xiang’s furtive glance and sighed, “I’m in a similar situation. You’re seriously injured. Let me help you get back.”
Despite Wang Xiang’s shady dealings for money, Tan Xingwang found no reason to dislike him, especially since he knew Young Lady Qi and felt a sense of guilt for his family’s involvement. It made him unsure of what to do.
Tan Xingwang suggested, “Let me take you back first. My home is also in the West District.”
Wang Xiang happily thanked him upon hearing Tan Xingwang’s offer.
Though Tan Xingwang was injured, he was tall and strong. The one who punished him knew that the prefect took pity on him for wanting to take the blame for his family, so the beating wasn’t as severe as the one Wang Xiang endured.
Tan Xingwang half-supported and half-carried Wang Xiang, guiding him home.
.
After spending some time in the cell, Wang Xiang returned to his humble home. Suddenly, everything seemed better—a broken door became very beautiful in his eyes, a weed appeared green under the moonlight looked good, and the ash was neatly spread.
Wang Xiang inhaled the air from his home, feeling satisfied. He took out a hidden key and opened the door of the main room, appreciating the simplicity of his home. As Tan Xingwang walked away with heavy steps, Wang Xiang embraced the familiarity of his surroundings.
The familiar streets led Tan Xingwang to the Tan family’s residence. Despite his deliberate attempt to walk slowly, he reached the destination sooner than expected.
As he stood in front of the familiar Tan family door, memories from childhood to adulthood flashed through his mind, causing his eyes to turn red inadvertently.
Gritting his teeth, Tan Xingwang stepped forward and knocked on the door.
Dong dong—
No response followed the first knock. Determined, Tan Xingwang knocked harder twice more.
Dong dong, dong dong!!
