Chapter 80: Chapter 37. The Point of "Death" (Part 9)
What is magic?
Most people would probably describe magic as the process or power of creating miracles, something beyond human capabilities. Moving objects with the mind, running faster than the speed of sound, breathing fire, controlling lightning — all of this would be magic in the minds of ordinary people.
Magic is the embodiment of the impossible, something that pushes the boundaries of reality and turns dreams into reality.
From my perspective, the title of "true magic" is deserved only by something on the level of Mai Zenin's Creation technique. True magic allows for the creation of something from "nothing." Unlike objects and "phenomena" created by domain expansion and other cursed techniques, the objects created by the Creation technique do not disappear after the technique is no longer active. I think this is what can truly be considered magic — the transformation of energy into matter. If you think about it, every other cursed technique merely alters the state of cursed energy, unlike Mai, who could essentially change the very structure of cursed energy, creating something entirely new and absolutely real from it.
This technique requires not only a huge amount of cursed energy but also the highest concentration and skill. The conversion of energy into matter is a process that defies simple explanation. Even after observing Mai's technique with all my ordinary and "spiritual" senses, I couldn't understand how the process of "creation" actually happens. It felt like a transformation of raw information into complex, tangible structures. And this was something that not even Satoru, with his Six Eyes, could see.
That's why it was true magic in my view — an act of genuine creativity, allowing ideas to be made real.
However, that was until today.
Facing Sukuna, for the first time in my life, I was about to experience true awe.
Maybe someday in the future, cursed energy will become something that can closely intertwine with human daily life, becoming something useful, something that drives human progress through thorns to the stars. In the hands of skilled masters, it could heal incurable diseases, build skyscrapers, provide endless energy for the world's metropolises. Cursed energy will become a tool transforming the world for the better, realizing humanity's boldest dreams and aspirations.
But now... Now I saw before me the true manifestation of magic in its mad form of destruction. Magic that destroyed everything in its path, turning everything into chaos and ashes. Magic embodying the very essence of destruction and chaos, a force that recognized no boundaries or rules. I saw cursed energy used not for creation, but for annihilation. Sukuna and Jogo were living embodiments of this power, their auras radiating a might capable of crushing everything in their path.
Even Satoru never made me feel this way... Perhaps it was because he was quite calm and never flaunted his power by destroying everything around him. It's also possible that my own weakness played a part in this, as even when I fought Satoru, the best I could draw out of him was the use of "Blue" and "Red"... I wasn't even strong enough to face "Purple" and his domain expansion…
My thoughts were interrupted by a powerful blast of scorching air in my face.
"Maximum: Meteor!" Jogo's raspy voice echoed. Despite its unusual softness, I still caught it.
In the next moment, an unimaginable amount of cursed energy began to gather above the arm Jogo had raised behind him. This energy twisted, swirled, and writhed, creating a sense of incredible tension in the air. It resembled a storm, with Jogo standing at its epicenter. Reality itself seemed to bend and break under the pressure of this power.
In less than a second, all that cursed energy transformed into a massive meteor. The pressure from this "heavenly stone" was so immense it felt as though the entire world might collapse under its weight. The air grew thick, every movement became laborious, and the ground beneath my feet trembled, as if anticipating inevitable catastrophe.
Sukuna's grin only widened in response. All four of his eyes gleamed maniacally as they fixated on Jogo's meteor. His gaze held both admiration and challenge. He extended one arm forward while bending the other at the elbow, taking a stance reminiscent of an archer. From his outstretched hand to the index and middle fingers of his other hand, a crimson flame arrow materialized. This fire was so vivid and alive, it seemed to pulse in time with Sukuna's own heartbeat. The arrow burned with such ferocity that the air around it shimmered and sparked, creating the illusion of flickering flames.
In that moment, the world held its breath, every particle of air, every molecule around us seemed to pause, awaiting the inevitable clash of these two extraordinary forces.
Then, something otherworldly awakened within me.
My spiritual energy, as if sensing the unimaginable danger I was in, surged from the depths of my soul. It was like an internal explosion, a shockwave that reverberated through my entire being. I felt this energy rise, filling me with strength and resolve. My heart pounded harder, my blood began to boil, and each breath I took was infused with an unprecedented sense of power and control.
Immediately after, the immense flames that had been raging around me began to converge in my right hand. The fire that had once danced chaotically now obediently flowed towards my palm, concentrating in a single point. The flames twisted, braided, and compressed as if obeying an invisible force. I felt the heat sear my skin, but it wasn't painful — it was a purifying, all-encompassing warmth.
"Aspect One: Compression."
At first, it was just a small sphere of white flame, bright and blinding. It pulsed in my palm like a heartbeat, sending powerful vibrations in sync with every pulse of my spiritual energy. I focused, channeling even more spiritual energy into this sphere, feeling it begin to compress under the pressure of my will. The sphere shrank, its light growing ever brighter, until it finally transformed into a small spear.
"Aspect One: Compression!"
The force with which I compressed the surrounding flames steadily increased. The fire around me twisted into a vortex, creating a true inferno. At the center of this storm, I stood holding a two-meter-long spear of pure white flame. The spear was so bright that its light dispelled the darkness around, creating a halo of light and heat. It was perfectly smooth, its surface shimmering like liquid metal, and the spear itself pulsed with energy, ready to burst forth.
"Second Spell: Blazing Spear!"
Mentally shouting the name of this spell, I felt something click in my mind, like a trigger activating a new wave of power. The flaming spear in my hand doubled in size, its light growing even brighter, consuming all the fire that surrounded me. It was no longer just a weapon but the embodiment of all my power. At that moment, the spear contained so much compressed flame that I could physically feel the pulsation of its destructive might through my palm.
Sukuna, Jogo, and I stood facing each other, forming a triangle. For a second, silence hung in the air; it seemed as if the whole world had lost its colors, sounds, and smells. Everything froze in anticipation of the inevitable. And in the next moment, as if by script, we simultaneously unleashed our attacks.
The massive meteor began its descent from the heavens. Air currents swirled around its spherical form, creating vortices and turbulence. With each passing moment, it grew redder, heating up to unimaginable temperatures, its surface cracking to reveal a blinding radiance. It seemed as though the air itself was burning from its approach, and the ground quaked under its weight and power.
In contrast to this fiery giant, Sukuna's arrow initially seemed tiny compared to the "heavenly stone," but the moment the "King of Curses" released it in our direction, it revealed its true power. The arrow didn't just fly — it incinerated everything in its path, leaving trails of ash and fire. The air it touched ignited instantly, and the arrow grew larger and larger, as if consuming the very space. Its fiery might increased with every moment, transforming it into a terrifying weapon of destruction that could annihilate everything in its path.
And then, amidst these two truly terrifying and destructive manifestations of magic, a thin line of white light flickered. My blazing spear pierced the air, threading its way through the turbulence and fiery storm. It moved effortlessly, as if it were destined to intersect these attacks. The white trail left by the blazing spear was almost invisible in the light of the meteor and Sukuna's fiery arrow, only occasionally flickering in the surrounding chaos. However, despite its apparent insignificance, the spear confidently moved towards its target, to the point where the three attacks would converge... the point I would call the "Point of Death."
In that moment, when the spear, meteor, and arrow met, time seemed to stand still. The air around us exploded, mixing all the elements in a singular burst. The white light of my spear pierced the fiery meteor from the side, penetrating its heated surface. The fire accompanying Sukuna's arrow merged with the white flame of my spear, creating a blinding radiance that dazzled the eyes. The meteor began to disintegrate, its red surface cracking and shattering, scattering in all directions like shards of glass.
The energy released from this collision was unimaginable. The ground beneath our feet erupted and caved in, erupted and caved in... The air was filled with a deafening roar, mixed with the howl of fire and the screams of destruction. It was as if worlds were colliding, a battle of the elements, where every moment could be the last. At this point of death, where the three greatest forces met, reality itself bent and cracked. Ultimately, unable to withstand the tension, all three territories crumbled into nothingness, opening a passage for this apocalyptic clash into the real world.
