Kaiju No.8: Devour and Evolve

Chapter 17: "It Seems You Refuse to Be Examined?"

Drake Myers laughed confidently from atop the unicorn monster's neck. "The outcome is far from certain," he declared, his tone brimming with self-assurance as he absorbed the creature's powers.

Though not particularly strong now, the unicorn's abilities would significantly bolster his survival skills. Among them, "Stun Zone" offered a formidable edge—an area-wide mental attack that left foes incapacitated without a sound. How could humans or monsters defend against such an intangible assault?

Drake's mind raced. Joining the Defense Force had once seemed appealing, but now he envisioned creating his own organization. The world was no longer the simple universe of Monster No. 8. High-tech advancements and other entities were bound to emerge.

Kikoru's Concern

"Are you insane?" Kikoru Shinomiya's voice cut through his thoughts.

As the daughter of a high-ranking Defense Force official, Kikoru understood the implications of Drake's actions. While she believed in his humanity, the idea of him challenging the Third Defense Force was unthinkable.

Drake, seemingly unmoved, replied coldly, "I just want to prove one thing—that humans are no less capable than the Defense Force. You've hurt my pride today."

His words were a mere cover. In reality, he was nearing the critical moment of absorbing the unicorn's powers. Within minutes, the process would be complete.

With his unparalleled senses of hearing and smell, Drake's combat effectiveness far exceeded expectations, even in his injured state.

A Commanding Arrival

In the distance, blinding headlights from several cars pierced the darkness, racing toward them. A stern voice rang out through a megaphone—it was Mina Ashiro, the captain of the Third Defense Force.

"No human has ever surpassed the Defense Force," she declared firmly.

The standard pathway to strength was clear: individuals with talent joined the Defense Force, underwent rigorous training, adapted to combat suits, and completed missions to slay monsters. Over time, the strong only grew stronger.

Mina's personal experiences mirrored those of many others. Her home destroyed by monsters, loved ones lost, and cherished memories reduced to rubble—such devastation fueled her resolve to fight back. The Defense Force wasn't just an organization; it was a symbol of hope and honor, a shield for humanity against annihilation.

Drake's Defiance

Drake's voice broke through the tension, sharp and unyielding. "At first, I thought of you as saviors of the world. But I've changed my mind. You lack judgment and decisiveness. One day, this will be your downfall.

"Look at me. People like me will become more common. Monsters are humanity's true enemies, yet you waste time testing me instead of fighting them. Is this the justice you claim to uphold?"

His words were laced with anger, yet his injuries were healing rapidly. What had appeared as mortal wounds no longer hindered his movement.

Drake's righteous indignation left Mina momentarily speechless.

The Defense Force's Doubts

"We have every reason to suspect you," Mina finally retorted, her voice unwavering. "You're an anomaly. How can we know whether you're human or monster? Come back with us to the base for an examination. If you check out, I'll personally welcome you into the Third Defense Force."

Her tone was serious, her respect for Drake evident despite her suspicions.

Drake remained seated, his eyes closed, his voice icy. "Once doubt takes root, you'll find countless reasons to justify it, won't you?"

A harsh voice broke in—Soushiro Hoshina. "Kid, I admit you're strong, but do you know who you're up against? The entire Third Defense Force! We protect Yokohama, Kanagawa, Sakura Nation, and even the entire Earth!"

Hoshina's hand rested on his sword hilt, his face tense. "Are you human or monster? Without confirmation, who can guarantee you won't bring catastrophe upon this world?"

A Chilling Showdown

Drake laughed dismissively. "How laughable. You narrow-minded frogs in a well! One day, you'll understand that people like me are everywhere."

His confidence was met with skepticism. If such individuals were truly commonplace, monsters wouldn't have wreaked such havoc across the Sakura Nation for so long.

Mina's demeanor turned icy, her gaze steely. "It seems you refuse to be examined," she said coldly.

Behind her, her trusted partner, Byakko, tensed, ready to pounce like a predator closing in on its prey.

Soushiro's grip on his sword tightened, his expression grave as the tension thickened.
