Chapter 32: Kaiju No. 8 Makes Its Entrance
With intel provided by Hatsuki Konomi and his orders clarified, Hoshina Soshiro quickly pieced together the situation: a new kaiju had appeared at Yokohama General Hospital.
"Commander, your approach was impulsive," Mina Ashiro sighed, her frustration clear. If Soshiro hadn't sent agents after Drake Myers, the new kaiju might not have fled the hospital.
"My apologies, Captain. It was entirely my misjudgment," Soshiro said, bowing respectfully.
Deep down, his suspicions about Drake Myers lingered. Even without a definitive report from their internal scans, the potential of parasitic creatures inhabiting human hosts made Soshiro uneasy.
"Don't worry," Mina reassured him. "In a couple of days, CCG agents will arrive in Yokohama to assist us. They'll help covertly confirm whether Drake is fully human." She was thorough, ensuring that any invitation for Drake to join the Defense Force came with absolute certainty about his identity. Despite her interest in recruiting him, Mina couldn't ignore the risk: if Drake turned out to be a kaiju and infiltrated their core operations, her position as Yokohama's commander would be in jeopardy.
Meanwhile, the presence of a newly logged kaiju didn't alarm her much. With updates on parasitic kaiju flooding in from Tokyo, Mina was becoming increasingly familiar with their patterns. Unlike large-scale kaiju, parasitic kaiju were generally humanoid in form. Though their abilities were unsettling, they lacked the devastating force of true kaiju.
"Report: The kaiju is moving rapidly… Wait! Another kaiju has just appeared in Sector F. Initial classification: Level 4!" Konomi's voice crackled over the comms.
"Split into two teams," Mina ordered. "Soshiro, take care of the kaiju in Sector F."
Tonight promised no respite.
Elsewhere, in the streets of Yokohama…
Kafka Hibino, now in full kaiju form, was sprinting alongside Reno Ichikawa. His newly transformed body felt alien—strong yet uncontrollable. Moments earlier, Kafka had instinctively consumed a bird mid-flight, much to Reno's horror.
"Could you at least try to act civil, senpai? We're in public!" Reno scolded.
"I can't help it!" Kafka wailed, his voice thick with self-pity. "This body just… acts on its own!"
"Well, it doesn't even have the right, uh, equipment for that!" Reno shot back.
"Don't start," Kafka groaned. "I really, really need to pee…" To Reno's dismay, a bizarre liquid sprayed from Kafka's chest. The absurdity of the scene left Reno speechless.
"Great, now I'm contaminated," Kafka lamented. "I'll never be clean again. Who's going to marry me now?!"
The duo soon reached the edge of a restricted zone. Concern etched across Reno's face.
"We're not safe yet, senpai. Drake Myers is nearby. If he sees you like this…" Reno shivered at the thought. Drake, a man of immense power and precision, would likely destroy Kafka on sight.
Without hesitation, Reno dragged Kafka into the restricted zone. As they ventured deeper, cries for help reached their ears. A young girl sobbed as she watched her mother pinned beneath rubble.
"Run, sweetheart! Leave me!" the mother shouted desperately.
The little girl froze, paralyzed by fear. Tears streamed down her face as she screamed, "Mommy, no! Somebody, help!"
Kafka, now hyper-aware in his kaiju form, acted instantly. Before Reno could react, Kafka disappeared in a blur, heading straight toward the source of the screams.
The girl's mother was beginning to lose hope when Kafka arrived. With his monstrous strength, he effortlessly lifted the debris and tossed it aside.
"You're safe now," he said gently, attempting a reassuring smile. But his kaiju visage only terrified the child further.
"A k-kaiju!" she shrieked, her cries growing louder.
"Senpai, could you please tone it down?!" Reno shouted as he arrived.
"Relax, I've got this," Kafka replied, grinning sheepishly. Turning back to the child, he said, "Don't worry, I'm a good guy!"
His toothy grin only made things worse. The girl's wails echoed louder than before.
At that moment, the nearby kaiju finally noticed them. Roaring, it charged straight at Kafka.
"Reno, get them out of here!" Kafka shouted.
"But—"
"Just go!" Kafka clenched his fists, blue energy beginning to pulse around him.
The moment was pure spectacle. Kafka planted his feet, his body glowing with raw power. His punch, executed with all the strength of his newfound form, struck the kaiju square in the chest. The impact split the night sky, releasing an explosion of red light.
When the dust settled, rain began to fall—dark red droplets staining the streets.
