Chapter 2 - The Nerve to Name Yourself Something That Ridiculous
Apparently, to operate as an adventurer in the Defense City of Nirgen, one had to bring the wooden tag given by the guards to the Adventurers’ Guild.
Having been given rough directions, Kikori found his way to the guild without much trouble and looked up at the building.
It was a three-story stone building. There was a sign hanging on the impressive and sturdy-looking building, but unfortunately Kikori couldn’t read it. He hadn’t learned to read, so there was no helping it.
“What a magnificent building…”
“Hmm? What’s this, a kid? No way, are you applying to be an adventurer?”
A man’s voice from behind startled Kikori, making him almost jump.
“And your weapon… what, an axe? Well, it’s not like you can’t use it, I guess.”
“Um”
“I’m Gantz. Kid, do you want to become an adventurer?”
“Yes. Nice to meet you, I’m Kikori.”
“Haha, nice to meet you, huh? It’s been a while since I heard such polite greetings!”
Kikori realized he had made a mistake.
Even though he thought he was speaking normally, others sometimes found it strange.
He should have known this, but still inadvertently did it.
“Well, being polite isn’t a bad thing. There aren’t many who would feel bad about being treated politely.”
Somehow, he seems like a good person, thought Kikori.
He had a muscular body and wore a metal breastplate, with additional armor on his arms and legs.
The shield on his back looked sturdy, and the sword at his waist appeared well-used.
He was probably a veteran adventurer.
“But, kid, you should give up on being an adventurer. You’ll only die.”
However, Gantz said that… as if he was certain that Kikori would die.
“But I…”
“But nothing. Do you think fighting for your life is a joke? I understand that a kid like you coming alone must have some serious reasons, but I have no intention of throwing fresh meat to the goblins.”
“Or,” Gantz peered into Kikori’s face.
“Or do you… underestimate goblins? Do you think they’re easy to kill? They’re not. They’re the kind of opponent that makes grown men wet themselves and run.”
After his threatening words, Gantz patted Kikori on the shoulder.
“Well, you came here saying you want to be an adventurer and got the tag, right? I’ll put in a word for you, so do some chores at the guild for 2 to 3 days, then look for another job.”
With Gantz slapping his shoulder, Kikori almost reflexively responded with “yes.”
But another job? Chores, customer service, delivery. Whatever the job, while having conversations, he might say something about his “past life” and expose himself.
Those useless memories that only hold him back might cause him to be called “demon-possessed” again.
If that’s what it’s going to be like.
“Hmm? What’s wrong?”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Gantz.”
He wanted to avoid interacting with others as much as possible.
At least until his common sense and thoughts aligned with those of the residents of this defense city.
“Even so, I… I want to become an adventurer.”
Hearing these words, Gantz’s expression changed several times.
Eventually, he let out a big sigh.
“You’ve got a cornered look in your eyes. What kind of life has a kid like you lived?”
“I’m sorry for worrying you. But I…”
“Ah, fine. Fine! It would just worry me if I stopped you and you snuck off anyway! Come on, let’s go, kid!”
“Kid? My name is…”
“Kikori, huh? The nerve to name yourself something that ridiculous. Well, this place is full of people like that anyway!”
With Gantz firmly grasping him, Kikori entered the Adventurers’ Guild.
