Chapter 12: Chapter 12: The Escalation of Misfortune

Zhao Lun's formidable strength subdued the lawless mob, ensuring his safe return home.

The defeated aggressors were hurled far from his path, clearing the exit to his house. Faced with Zhao Lun's might, they feigned death on the ground.

"Listen up! Whoever has stolen or vandalized our property, step forward and make proper amends! If not—hmph!" With a cold snort, Zhao Lun shut the door behind him, leaving retribution for a later time once he had regained his footing.

Ten days had passed since Zhao Lun's return to the village, enough time for the initial tumult to subside. Outwardly, no one dared display hostility towards them. Zhao Lun knew better than to press too hard; he desired a life here and understood that reckless actions would only spell trouble. Even with his divine realm, he was aware that invincibility was an illusion in this perilous world, where survival demanded discretion and the semblance of normalcy.

A truce, silent and uneasy, had been reached. Neither side acknowledged the other, communicating their unwelcoming attitudes through an unspoken detachment.

Zhao Lun was unbothered by this coldness. As long as they stayed away, he could handle any hardship. The villagers, suspecting his strength as a legacy of his father's martial prowess, dared not provoke him. The myths surrounding Maria's misfortune only heightened their aversion. Even children avoided them, perceiving Zhao Lun and Maria as untouchable threats.

Content in their newfound tranquility, the pair rarely ventured out. It was now afternoon, and Zhao Lun napped on a reclining chair near an intact window, wrapped in a blanket. Beside him lay Maria, unwilling to part from his side, even in slumber.

The warm sunlight filtered through, shielded from the wind, making their naps especially restful. Compared to the decrepit seaside shack, this place was a haven. They had quickly embraced the luxury of post-meal siestas, recharging their spirits in this improved environment.

Awakening, they prepared their tools and set out for the sea to fish. With housing and clothing sorted, food was the only ongoing challenge, one that the sea could readily address. The divine spring in Zhao Lun's realm made fishing remarkably efficient, yielding provisions for days with each outing. Yet, they persisted in regular fishing trips, knowing the importance of fresh and varied food in their growth.

The past ten days had brought significant changes to Zhao Lun and Maria. Daily sips of the enchanted spring water had silently enhanced their physiques. Zhao Lun discovered a burgeoning ability to manipulate air currents, enhancing his strength and enabling feats beyond his natural capacity. Maria's misfortune aura had evolved, now selectively targeting her adversaries while sparing those she cared for.

This newfound control led to numerous mishaps befalling their previous tormentors—trivial yet incessant misfortunes that subtly disrupted their lives. The villagers, sensing the shifting tides of fate, grew increasingly wary of Maria, recognizing the danger of her latent power.

Out at sea, the pair worked with practiced ease. Zhao Lun scattered bait, waiting patiently as fish swarmed the shallows, lured by the irresistible magic-infused waters. With a precise throw, he cast his net, the air currents aiding in ensnaring the fish. Together, he and Maria hauled in their bountiful catch, securing enough provisions for days ahead.

Their return to a simpler, self-sufficient life provided a measure of solace amidst the underlying tension. For now, they had found a fragile peace, a brief respite from the ever-looming uncertainties of their world.
