Rebekah's POV
At first, I couldn't understand why Kol was so insistent on this, nor why Klaus—of all people—agreed so readily. Teaching Caroline Forbes how to hunt seemed beneath us, especially with her undying loyalty to the doppelganger and her band of misfit friends. But now, as I watched her stumble through the woods, struggling to follow my instructions, I started to see the purpose behind Kol's plan.
"Focus," I snapped, my patience thinning as she stepped on a twig, the sharp crack piercing the silence. The man we were trailing—a drifter, likely no one to miss—shifted uncomfortably ahead, his instincts telling him something was off. "Do you want to scare him away before you even get close?"
Caroline exhaled in frustration, adjusting her posture, her movements growing more cautious. She was trying, but her inexperience was painfully obvious. She didn't get it yet—that hunting wasn't just about satisfying a hunger. It was about control, precision, and the thrill of the chase.
I motioned for her to hang back as I closed in on the man. In an instant, I was on him, my hand covering his mouth as I sank my fangs into his neck. The warmth of his blood flooded me, and for a moment, the world around me disappeared. When I finished, I compelled him to forget and sent him on his way, his mind clouded, but unharmed.
I turned back to Caroline, wiping my mouth. "Your turn."
Her eyes flicked nervously from me to the man who had just entered the clearing. "I don't think I can—"
"You can, and you will," I interrupted firmly. "You're not a child, Caroline. This is who you are now. Accept it."
She swallowed hard but nodded, stepping forward hesitantly. I watched as she approached the man, awkward and unsure, like a bird testing its wings for the first time. It was almost painful to watch.
At first, the man didn't notice her, but when he did, his eyes widened in alarm. Caroline lunged, her movements clumsy, but she managed to pin him against a tree. She bit down, her fangs sinking into his skin, and I could see the moment she tasted his blood. Her eyes darkened, and her grip tightened.
"Stop," I commanded, my tone sharp. She hesitated, her breath ragged as she pulled away, blood dripping from her lips.
"But—"
"No buts," I cut her off. "You don't drain them completely unless you want to kill. Compel him and let him go."
SHe flinched 'ITS as i guessed'
She stared at me for a moment before nodding. Her voice trembled as she whispered the compulsion, erasing the man's memory and sending him on his way.
By the time we were finished, she was visibly shaken, her hands trembling as she wiped them on her jeans. "This is harder than I thought," she admitted.
I rolled my eyes. "Of course it is. If it were easy, every fledgling would have mastered it by now. But you'll get the hang of it."
We returned to the car in silence, the weight of what she had just done heavy in the air. Once we were at a bar, I poured us both a drink—bourbon for me, a blood cocktail for her—and decided it was time to offer some clarity.
She sipped her drink cautiously, her eyes flicking to mine. "Why are you and Kol helping me? I mean, Even Klaus agreed. Why go through all this trouble?"
I swirled the bourbon in my glass, considering how to answer. "Kol has his reasons—or no reason at all. That's just who he is. But if I had to guess, I'd say it's a mix of things."
She tilted her head, waiting for me to elaborate.
"For one, you told him everything that happened before and after we showed up. Kol knows Klaus admires loyalty—fierce, unyielding loyalty. And you, Caroline Forbes, are loyal to your friends. Blindly loyal, maybe, but loyal all the same. It's why Kol gave Klaus just enough reason to agree to the deal he was already leaning toward."
Her face tightened at the backhanded compliment, but I kept going. "He probably thinks that if you can see the bigger picture, you might stop being so naïve. You might even start questioning whether your friends deserve the loyalty you give them. He wants to give you perspective."
Caroline frowned, clearly uncomfortable with where this was heading.
I leaned back in my chair, my voice more serious now. "But it's not just about loyalty. When you spoke about the Salvatores earlier, I saw it in your face—you flinched. Your expression was a dead giveaway, like you were reliving something painful. Kol noticed it too Nik would have noticed to if he was there. And since we know what kind of man Stefan is, and how we both feel about men like Damon, we came to a conclusion. Even if Damon's has to be left alive for any reason, Kol won't let it be easy."
Caroline's gaze dropped to her glass, her hands tightening around it. I softened my tone, though the subject was anything but gentle.
"My brothers don't tolerate men like Damon," I said quietly. "Men who take what isn't theirs. Men who thrive on pain and powerlessness. We've seen it too many times."
Caroline didn't look up, but I could see her stiffen.
"And if you must know," I added, my voice sharp, "neither Kol nor any of my brothers can stand the thought of another man thinking of me that way. It's an affront they won't let slide. Not now, not ever."
Her head snapped up, confusion flickering in her eyes. "Wait, so he's doing this because he—"
"Because he cares about survival," I interrupted briskly. "Yours, mine, and our family's. He believes this will make you stronger. Because if you ever face someone like that again—human or vampire—you'll know exactly how to handle it."
She was quiet for a long time, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass. Finally, she looked up, her eyes determined. "I'll get better. At all of it. Hunting, feeding, controlling myself. I won't let anyone see me as weak again. But… will it come back to me about Damon?"
I smiled, sensing the conflict simmering beneath her resolve. "Smart girl. Still conflicted, though."
I could see the struggle within her—the girl she had been, torn between the people who had manipulated her and the woman she was becoming. It was a wound she wasn't ready to face.
I gave Caroline a pointed look, my smirk tugging at my lips. "Oh, Care Bear. Since Damon and Stefan stole our coffins, Kol has already been thinking of punishing them. He's just picking the most convenient target for now. Klaus? He won't intervene. He knows better than to bring Kol's wrath upon him. Kol will needle him every single day for the next decade if Klaus tries to stop him."
Caroline looked utterly shocked, but I wasn't finished.
"Also," I continued, leaning in a little, "your little group thought it was a good idea to raise my mother from the dead. Kol and Klaus are pissed about it. Klaus didn't think too highly of all this training either, but he believes it gives him more room to maneuver in the future."
She looked floored. "Wait, what? You mean—"
I smirked, raising my glass in mock toast. "What, you didn't know? I'm always right about these things. Oh, Care Bear, this week is going to be fantastic. We will even go shopping with Kol's money. I'm sure I can talk him into letting me change up your daylight jewelry too. You'll be so helpful with shopping for his wardrobe, haven't you?"
Her expression softened, despite the whirlwind of emotions still playing out in her eyes. I could see she was processing everything, still struggling to reconcile the person she had been with the woman she was becoming.
