Chapter 140: Chapter 139: Uchiha Fugaku
Chapter 139: Uchiha Fugaku
Konoha Hospital.
This was Tonari's first visit to the Konoha Hospital after being appointed as the leader of the Third Division of the Konoha Medical Corps.
To be honest, ever since he arrived in the world of Naruto, he had rarely set foot in the hospital unless absolutely necessary. Even when Tsunade was working there, he would typically find her elsewhere.
The familiar smell of disinfectant brought a strange sense of nostalgia.
"Tonari-sama!"
"Leader Tonari!"
"Doctor Tonari!"
As soon as he entered, people began greeting him one after another.
Tonari had gained some fame in Konoha, and though not everyone knew him personally, word of his accomplishments had spread.
"Is that young ninja really a Special Jōnin? And a Medical Corps leader too?"
A wounded ninja being treated nearby voiced his confusion, evidently someone who didn't keep up with Konoha's latest happenings.
The medical ninja treating him was about to reply, but another patient sitting nearby interjected first.
"He's one of the most outstanding young ninjas in Konoha, considered on par with talents like Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki. He's Tsunade's disciple and Orochimaru's student. They even call him one of the 'Young Sannin' of Konoha. He dominated the Chūnin Exams recently, becoming a Chūnin with ease. And you don't know who he is?"
The questioning ninja blinked, stunned by the barrage of information.
"All that?"
Before the medical ninja could add anything, another patient chimed in:
"I know even more. My uncle's wife's cousin works in the Hokage's office, and he said that just a few days ago, Tonari was promoted to Special Jōnin. Not only that, but he's now the leader of the Third Division of the Medical Corps. His reputation is growing so much that even the clan heads are paying attention to him."
This left the first man completely speechless.
The discussions around Tonari's accolades rippled through the hospital lobby, and everyone's impression of him continued to deepen.
Unbeknownst to them, Tonari slowed his steps to catch snippets of their conversation, an amused smile tugging at his lips.
---
Reaching the third floor, Tonari entered the workspace for the Third Division.
Unlike the usual ninja team structure, each medical division had numerous members. The Third Division consisted of twelve individuals, divided into three smaller groups with a leader for each.
When Tonari arrived, no one seemed to notice him; the entire team was busy treating a critically injured patient.
Sitting in the waiting area was a young man in standard Konoha uniform, about seventeen or eighteen years old. He rested his chin on his hand, his demeanor calm but with a subtle hint of anxiety.
The man noticed Tonari's arrival and gave him a polite nod, which Tonari returned. They didn't exchange words.
Tonari eventually broke the silence. "Are they your comrades inside?"
The young man nodded, his voice laced with a bitter undertone.
"Yes. We were ambushed during a mission. Though we completed it, two of my teammates were gravely injured, poisoned during the encounter. By the time we returned to Konoha, the poison had spread throughout their bodies."
As the man spoke, Tonari gathered that he was the leader of his team—a full-fledged Jōnin.
Becoming a Jōnin at his age was no small feat, even before the rise of prodigies like Minato and the others.
Their mission was connected to tasks allocated to Konoha by Sunagakure, and the ambush likely came from rogue or hostile forces exploiting the political tension.
Placing a reassuring hand on the man's shoulder, Tonari noticed fresh blood staining his uniform—a sign that he was injured but had yet to receive treatment.
"Your shoulder…" Tonari frowned.
"It's nothing serious. I haven't had time to deal with it," the man replied, pulling out a handkerchief embroidered with the Uchiha clan symbol.
Tonari raised an eyebrow. "Uchiha?"
The young man hesitated, his expression slightly awkward. "It's not what you think..."
Uchiha weren't exactly popular in Konoha, often perceived as arrogant and aloof—a reputation not entirely undeserved, given their actions and Konoha's systematic suppression of the clan.
Tonari waved his hand dismissively, placing his palm over the man's injured shoulder. With a subtle glow of green chakra, he activated the Mystical Palm Technique.
The man's eyes widened in surprise.
"You seem… different from most of your clan," Tonari remarked. "Regardless, as a medical ninja, it's my duty to help you."
The man stared at him for a moment, processing his words, before finally saying, "You are…?"
"Tonari. Uchiha Yoshinari is one of my teammates," Tonari replied as he withdrew his hand, leaving the injury fully healed.
The man's demeanor shifted immediately.
"So you're Tonari! Yoshinari has mentioned you often," he said with genuine enthusiasm. "I'm Uchiha Fugaku. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Tonari froze for a split second.
Uchiha Fugaku. The legendary Uchiha clan head. The father of Itachi and Sasuke.
It all clicked. No wonder this man seemed vaguely familiar—he was a younger version of a pivotal character in Konoha's future.
"Yoshinari is your cousin?"
Fugaku coughed lightly, looking slightly embarrassed.
"Yes, technically speaking, though the family ties aren't particularly close. Still, Yoshinari's recent successes have brought pride to the Uchiha clan. He often speaks highly of you, especially regarding the Chūnin Exams, where you supposedly helped him awaken and evolve his Sharingan to the second tomoe stage."
Tonari sighed internally. It seemed his reputation as the "Uchiha Whisperer" had taken root, no matter how much he tried to downplay it.
"Let me guess. If I claim it was all a coincidence, you won't believe me?"
Fugaku smiled faintly. "I might… but it's hard to argue with results."
---
Before their conversation could continue, urgent voices from the treatment room interrupted them.
"His heart—! The poison is spreading too fast!"
"We need more hands here!"
"I'll handle this." Tonari stood, striding toward the commotion.
Fugaku watched him go, his gaze filled with hope.
In the treatment room, the patient on the operating table was a young man with a pallid complexion. His veins were visibly blackened, and his shallow breaths were a clear sign of critical poisoning.
"What's the status?" Tonari asked.
A female medic-nin glanced up, startled to see an unfamiliar figure.
"Who are—?"
"Mid-level toxin infiltration, not responding to basic detoxification. Have you tried the Chakra Scalpel yet?" Tonari cut her off, stepping up to the table and assessing the situation.
The lead medic blinked in surprise, taken aback by his confident tone and precise observation. "You know my name?"
"Of course. You're Naka Anzu, leader of the first sub-group under the Third Division," Tonari replied without hesitation.
Anzu narrowed her eyes but didn't object as Tonari quickly took charge.
He summoned his chakra scalpel, expertly making small incisions to release the buildup of contaminated blood. Despite the grotesque sight of dark, viscous fluid oozing out, his focus remained unshaken.
At one point, Anzu hesitated to intervene, but Tonari handed her a small pill.
"Have the patient swallow this. It will stabilize his vitals temporarily," he instructed.
Despite her skepticism, she complied, noticing the patient's complexion improving slightly.
"It's not enough. We need to isolate the poison entirely…" Tonari muttered to himself, activating his sensory abilities to trace the toxin's spread.
After a moment of silence, he abruptly grabbed a surgical scalpel.
"What are you—?" Anzu gasped as Tonari plunged the scalpel into the patient's chest, directly targeting the heart.
