Mafia Marriage: Contracted by Mr Phantom

Chapter 5: 5. Taking a bullet

Camilla's eyes widened in terror like a deer caught in the headlights. She tried to speak, but her lips trembled uncontrollably as her words caught up in her throat.

Her heart extremely pounded hard on her chest in fright of both the deafening sound of the gunshot and the horrific sight before her. She reached out a trembling hand touching his chest and then froze when she felt a sleek wetness on the palm of her hands.

"Is this blood?" She asked no one in particular, her voice barely a whisper as it oozed out in between her fingers, thick and hot. Other people who were in the store couldn't stop screaming and running around everywhere as if the hitman was still present.

"Y- you're bleeding." She muttered in a trembling voice, looking down at Carlos. "You took a bullet for me?" Her voice was filled with confusion and disbelief.

He twisted his face in pain as he forced a lopsided grin. "I'm okay. It's.... it's not that bad."He assured her, although he was in so much pain, and blood wouldn't stop flowing out. The son of a bitch almost shot him on the heart, but luckily, the bullet hit just below his ribcage.

The shop attendants had already called the police and ambulance. Within five minutes, they both arrived almost at the same time and took both Carlos and Camilla to the hospital.

Arriving there, the nurses hurried Carlos into an intensive care unit in a rolling bed, Camilla following behind until the nurse told her to wait in the waiting room.

The moment she sat down, the gravity of the situation fell upon her. She was certain that the killer was targeting her, but Carlos jumped in the nick of time and took the bullet instead. She couldn't believe it. So there is someone out there who would want her dead. Like, for what reason? And who might it be? Although the incident left her with a lot of questions, what she found most unfathomable was why Carlos sacrificed himself for her. She isn't someone special.

As she sat down, lost in her thoughts, two police officers approached her for questioning.

"Sorry for disturbing, ma'am, but we want to ask you some questions." The tall, dark officer holding a pen and a book in hand said to her. She just nodded - "Go ahead."

They began questioning her, asking who the murderer was, and she answered truthfully, recounting everything that had happened. But when they asked her how she was connected to the victim, she hesitated to answer. Should she tell them he had purchased her? Or should she lie and claim they were relatives? What if that'll only make things more complicated?

"He's my fiancee." She blurted.

'What the fuck are you saying?' The voice in her head asked and she ignored it.

Finally, at last, the doctor approached them and told her that Carlos wasn't in a life-threatening condition and that he would be discharged the next day. The two police officers walked away after questioning her and a wave of joy washed all over her face as she patted her lips in a smile. Suddenly, El Rey opened the door of the waiting room in a rush, and her expression instantly went dull as she laid eyes on him. He walked over to her, a plastic bag on his left hand and a bucket of fruits on the right.

"How is Carlos?"He literally demanded, without even greeting her.

She let out a scoff. "The doctor said he'll be fine."She glanced away.

He heaved a sigh of relief, which left her befuddled. She couldn't understand this man even a bit. He gave her a mission to destroy Carlo's life, and yet, he gets worried when he gets shot? Just what the heck?

He leaned closer to her ears. "You're doing great, Camilla. The more you keep it up, the more your parents gain their freedom back. Don't ever forget their lives are in my hand, and never forget about the rule. UNDERSTOOD?"

She swallowed hard as she felt a stinging pain in her heart. If it weren't for her stupid ganster-wanted-to be father, she wouldn't be in this mess, and her mother wouldn't be suffering.

"DID YOU UNDERSTAND!?" El Rey repeated himself in a quiet yell. His maliciously rough voice turned her joints weak, so she just nodded to show him that she understood her mission perfectly well. He reached for his plastic bag and brought out a brand new phone, and handed it over to her.

"It's yours. You don't call me; I call you. And if he asks where you got it, you'll say from me. Here is our story— You'll tell him l was sick and worried about him, and wanted to stay in touch with someone close to him, so that's why I bought a phone for you. Understood? "He roared on her ear, his voice irritating her like an annoying, persistent fly that kept buzzing and won't go away, but she just nodded 'yes' anyway.

"Good girl. Say 'Hi' to him when he wakes up." She nodded again as he turned his back and left, the sound of his black ankle-cover boots echoeing through the corridor. That's when she felt relieved. His very presence exuded evil, totally different from how she felt around the man she was tasked to pretend to love, which made her wonder why Carlos even trusted him so much.

Later that day, the doctors transferred Carlos from an intensive care unit to an ordinary hospital room, although he was still unconscious. Camilla was afraid to go back to his house alone. What would she say to his guards, and what if she gets followed again by the killer and gets shot in the fuckin skull. With all that in mind, she decided to sleep on a chair next to his bed until morning.

She was awoken by a pat on her back as she slowly squinched her eyes open, only to see Carlos glaring at her, his cold eyes still the same like how she knew them.

A smile spread across her lips. "Morning." She said softly.

"What are you doing here?" He responded, his voice a lite harsh.

"Where did you want me to go, huh!?" She snarled, folding her hands.

He tried to sit up straight but felt a sharp pain on his chest, which made him let out a low, painful growl.

"Are you STUPID?" He lashed out at Camilla in a slightly loud yell. "I purchased you, and when l got shot, you were supposed to take that opportunity and escape from me, or at least report me to the police or something." He added, looking intently on her face to see how she'd react, but she only raised an eyebrow.

"I can't do that to someone who just took a bullet for me."She said. "And l can't leave you. I'm on a mission." She added on her mind. She wouldn't say that out loud.

He sighed. "Where's my phone?." He asked, trying to avoid the 'taking-a-bullet-for-me' conversation that he didn't even understand himself why he did something as stupid as that. His body only moved on its own.

She reached out to her pocket and handed it over to him. He took it, operated it a little, and brought it to his ears.

"Hey, Tualic. Someone tried to surreptitiously murder my toy, but shot me instead. Send some boys to collect me from the hospital and track the person down. I want to kill him with my own hands!" He said over the phone.

"Okay, boss. Consider it done." The guy over the phone responded. He is Carlos's second trusted member of the Black Eagles after El Rey, and he is a computer genius and also good in gathering information and tracking people down.

Meanwhile, Camilla couldnt stop shivering as she saw the angry expression on Carlo's voice.

'Gosh... the sound of his voice, and the look on his face; it all screams Danger with a capital letter 'D' .This is how he is when he gets really pissed off, huh! I wouldn't want to get on that bad side of him, but... "She sighed. " I will eventually. It's inevitable.' She mused to herself and then sighed again.
