The heavy curtains blocked out the bright blue sky outside. Due to the distance between the Empire’s central star system and the sun, daytime here was much longer than night.
To ensure the male zerg had adequate sleep, Rhys, with the male zerg’s silent approval, replaced the thin sheer curtains with these heavy light-blocking ones on his second day of moving in.
The villa’s temperature control system was always on, and in the middle of the large bed in the upstairs bedroom, a female zerg, dressed in dark sleepwear, curled up with his head nestled in the crook between the male’s chest and arm.
The room, isolated from any light, was filled only with the sound of their even breathing.
Though it was still early, the female’s internal clock wouldn’t let him sleep any longer. Rhys held himself to high standards, never oversleeping, and his routine of waking, dressing, and getting out of bed was swift and efficient.
Slipping out of the male zerg’s embrace, he searched the floor for the slippers that had been kicked away during the night.
Not wanting to disturb the male zerg’s good sleep, Rhys groped in the darkness for today’s outfit.
Thankfully, the female’s night vision was excellent. Rhys had used these very eyes to kill countless alien enemies in the pitch-blackness of space black holes.
Rhys usually started his morning with a physical training session in the simulator of the exercise room on the first floor.
After finishing, he would go to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. His male lord was different from ordinary male zergs; his meal portions rivaled those of military female zergs, requiring plenty of meat.
Rhys pre-ordered fresh vegetables and food every day, and after his training, a delivery robot would promptly bring the food to the doorstep.
But today was different. As soon as the male zerg sensed Rhys waking, he struggled to sit up, half-opening his eyes, “Where are you going?” he asked, still groggy and mumbling.
“Sleep a bit longer. I’ll come upstairs to call you once breakfast is ready,” Rhys said, fastening the last cufflink.
The male zerg had exerted himself quite a bit last night, so Rhys had already planned to skip his daily training to prepare breakfast first.
“I’m not hungry.” The male zerg, unable to see in the dark, tried to get up from the bed in a daze and almost fell headfirst to the ground.
Rhys quickly reached out to prevent the male zerg from falling. Once the male zerg was steady, Rhys found a red remote control on the bedside table, and the heavy curtains slowly opened, letting in a bit of sunlight.
“Be careful not to catch a cold. Put on your shirt first.” Rhys took a white shirt that the male zerg liked from the larger wardrobe on the left and helped him cover his exposed upper body.
He Qin had grown up in a military camp on Earth, where his brothers usually slept shirtless, and he hadn’t changed this habit since arriving on the zerg planet.
“Why are you up so early today? Do you have something to do?”
During the first three months of the male zerg’s transformation, he tended to sleep more. Usually, by the time Rhys left, his male lord would still be asleep, which was a normal physiological reaction.
Today, however, he was unusually early.
“Nothing in particular. I just want to resume my morning runs.” He Qin yawned, walked to the window, breathed in the fresh air, and stretched his arms, finally waking up completely.
Since his last back injury, which took nearly half a month to heal, He Qin realized he was gradually becoming more like the empire’s male zergs. He didn’t want his body to become weak like those other male zergs who would fall apart over minor ailments.
Sleeping in was the first bad habit he needed to change.
Morning runs in the sunlight and fresh air were He Qin’s favorite way to exercise.
“Then I’ll join you,” Rhys said, though he preferred indoor workouts. The idea of running on the road with his male master in the morning was a blissful scenario he had never dreamed of.
Empire male zergs disliked any activity that made them tired, especially exercises that made them sweat. Meeting a male zerg who shared his interests and was gentle with him seemed like a dream even three months ago.
Now, such an outstanding male zerg was a reality, within his reach, and exclusively his for the time being.
“Please wear these shoes today. They are suitable for exercise.”
The house assigned to He Qin by the Empire government had a large enough yard, and the two of them ran over twenty laps on the small path in the yard, with He Qin leading and Rhys following.
When a thin layer of sweat appeared on He Qin’s body and his leg muscles began to ache, Rhys, having watched the male zerg’s every move, noticed his slowing pace and suggested they stop.
He Qin knew the importance of not overexerting on the first day of resumed exercise. After wiping the sweat from his forehead and resting for a while, he took Rhys’s hand and led him back into the house.
Rhys looked down at their intertwined hands, breathing in the faint ginger lily scent from the male zerg. He felt he must be the luckiest female in the world.
“Rhys, I’ll work out with you every morning from now on. Make sure to wake me up,” He Qin said.
Because of their early start, Rhys didn’t have time to prepare breakfast. Luckily, Ivan, also woke up early and had skillfully prepared breakfast for the whole family while they exercised.
“You really don’t need to do this,” Rhys said hesitantly, recalling the male’s wish on K19 for him to freely express any thoughts.
Rhys knew He Qin always wanted to return to the military, and physical training was crucial. He hoped the male zerg could achieve his dream, knowing how difficult the path would be.
Male zergs were the most noble in the Empire. If He Qin wanted, with his status and accumulated wealth, they could live comfortably for the rest of their lives.
As a soldier, Rhys wanted He Qin to achieve his self-worth, but as a partner, he wished the male zerg could live a simple and comfortable life.
“Alright, Rhys,” Ivan said, breaking the tense atmosphere at the table. “Moderate exercise is good for health. Lord He just need to control the intensity,” he said gently to the young male zerg.
Rhys’s open opposition had made Ivan nervous. He knew Rhys was used to commanding in the military but shouldn’t bring that attitude into their personal life. No matter how good-tempered the male zerg was, there was always a limit.
“Father, we agreed you wouldn’t call me that anymore. Just call me Little Qin,” He Qin said, his short hair having grown considerably longer, now lying softly atop his head, making him look like an undeveloped teenager.
He Qin wasn’t particularly sensitive. He was even pleased that Rhys could naturally offer suggestions in front of him. All the hints and efforts He Qin made to open up his heart had finally paid off.
“Father, do you want to go out?” He Qin asked, finishing the last bite of his sandwich and accepting the handkerchief Rhys handed him.
When they had taken Ivan back from the Qi family, Qi Lun had learned that night that Ivan, the lowly female servant, was actually Rhys’s biological female father and now belonged to a male who had returned from Earth. Realizing he had been completely outwitted by a young, unfamiliar male zerg, Qi Lun’s house had stayed brightly lit all night, with occasional curses heard from inside.
“But I can’t go out alone.”
Without a male zerg accompanying him, Ivan going out was like announcing he wanted to hand himself back to Qi Lun. Plus, with his injuries needing at least a month of good rest, Ivan hadn’t left the house since moving in with He Qin.
However, he had already grown accustomed to a life disconnected from the outside world.
Having been confined in the Qi family for nearly forty years, from initially thinking of ways to escape to later just wanting to live well with Rhys.
“After dropping Rhys off at the military, I need to meet. Ryan, but I can’t fly the craft. Father, would you be willing to be my driver for the time being?” He Qin tried to soften his voice, attempting to use his dark eyes to give Ivan courage.
“I have a pilot’s license, but that was forty years ago.”
“It doesn’t matter. It’s still better than me.”
His “father-in-law” was a kind female who, after nearly forty years of torment, deserved to freely stand in the sunlight.
If Ivan didn’t have the courage, He Qin would be the solid support, enabling them to openly choose their own lives.
“Little… Little Qin,” Ivan struggled to say the name without an honorific, his tongue twisting before he managed it. “But, won’t it cause trouble for you?”
Ivan turned to look at Rhys. He wanted to see what the world had become but worried about causing unnecessary trouble for the young male zerg.
“Father, if you don’t come with me, I’ll have to find any driver, and only females might be willing to help me here.” He Qin lowered his head and pouted, looking completely like a pitiful young boy without help.
Rhys remained silent, focusing on cleaning the dishes. This matter had been discussed the previous night with his master, and he fully agreed. Letting his female father get accustomed to the outside world and, if possible, finding him a light job to return to normal life was also Rhys’s wish as his child.
“Father?” He Qin’s pitiful expression made it impossible for Ivan to refuse.
“I hope this won’t cause any trouble.”
Going out? He wondered what the world and the other Zergs had become.
Rhys placed the dishes into the machine, scheduled the evening’s groceries for delivery online, and efficiently managed all the household chores.
“Let’s go, Female father.” Rhys stepped forward and gave a firm hug to the female zerg who gave him life.
“With me behind you, it’s okay,” He Qin said, pulling Rhys’s hand.
With two children, one an Imperial hero and the other a distinguished A-class male zerg of the Empire, Ivan felt his entire body fill with courage.
That’s right, with such excellent children to protect him, there was no need to fear the Qi family or Qi Lun anymore.
The sky outside was blue, and the sun was shining brightly. With hope for the world and fear of the unknown, Ivan finally took his first step towards a normal life.
