Chapter 40 - I
The next day, the sky brightened.
Feng Chilie and Tan Chuyan opened their eyes and, as they prepared to go downstairs after washing up, they spotted the Hongying Army searching for someone.
Feng Chilie quickly pulled Tan Chuyan back into the house. Tan Chuyan, disguised as Young Master Yan, could be exposed if seen by the Hongying Army.
Anxious and without a spare veil, Feng Chilie could only make one from his own dark clothes, concealing Tan Chuyan’s identity.
The black cloth wrapped around Tan Chuyan’s face highlighted his fair skin, and the minor injuries from the previous day made him appear a bit frail.
Feng Chilie held his hand and asked, “So, who are we now?”
Tan Chuyan pondered for a moment. “Perhaps, relatively innocent bed partners?”
Feng Chilie’s expression shifted. “Would you have such a relationship with someone else?” The thought unsettled him, prompting discomfort and panic.
After tying the veil, Feng Chilie’s rough fingers traced the protruding bones on the back of his neck. He sighed softly, “It’s too thin. How can you be so thin?”
“It’s okay,” Tan Chuyan reassured as he lifted the face towel and puffed up his cheeks. “Look, isn’t this quite fleshy?”
“No,” Feng Chilie replied, pinching his face. “You still need to grow some flesh to make it comfortable to hold.”
Tan Chuyan patted his hand down, asking, “What kind of flesh do you want to hold for the rest of your life?”
Feng Chilie raised his eyebrows. “Can’t I?”
Tan Chuyan was momentarily stunned, then lowered his eyes and smiled. Standing up, he concealed his heartbeat. “Yes, why not? But I must remind the general that the price of my life is not small.”
“Tell me about it,” Feng Chilie said curiously. “I’ll come and see if I can afford this price.”
“General, listen up,” Tan Chuyan looked up at him. “I am very stingy and don’t like to share men.”
“So, if you want me for the rest of your life,” Tan Chuyan put his hand on Feng Chilie’s lower abdomen, feeling the outline of his muscles.
“You have to give me your heart and be prepared to be the only one. If you dare to have three wives and four concubines, if you have affairs outside, I will not only kill those women and men but also make you die a terrible death.”
Tan Chuyan’s hand slid up and stopped on Feng Chilie’s heart. “In other words, from now on, for the rest of my life, it’s just the two of us. Do you dare?”
Feng Chilie, exposed to men with countless wives and concubines since childhood, was indeed shocked when someone suddenly told him they could only have each other for the rest of their lives.
“Don’t worry,” Tan Chuyan withdrew his hand and glanced indifferently at Feng Chilie. “I will not engage with others in this way until our relationship is severed. It’s distasteful.”
Intimate relationships were acceptable, but only with one person at a time – a matter of principle.
Just like love, the next chapter could only begin when the previous one end.
Feng Chilie sensed Tan Chuyan’s indifference. “Have you ever had such relationships with others before?”
“I wanted to, but did I have a chance?” Tan Chuyan replied. “I’m either a eunuch or a master, and I can’t even meet the maids. How many opportunities would I have?”
Feng Chilie breathed a sigh of relief, adding subconsciously, “Before I met you, I had never been involved with anyone else.”
“Oh,” Tan Chuyan asked casually, “Will you give your heart to me? Just me?”
Silence hung in the air as Feng Chilie grappled with the question.
Observing Feng Chilie’s struggle, Tan Chuyan’s lips curled up slightly. He knew the conceptual gap was challenging for Feng Chilie to bridge.
It was best if he couldn’t bridge it, so that after fulfilling his promise to the master, he could leave without any reservations.
Tan Chuyan’s longing was never for a high position and bright accolades but for freedom from shackles.
Staying in the court would subject him to open and covert struggles, even with protection and advocacy.
Human desires were endless. Once one person attained a high position, others eagerly strived to ascend as well.
For instance, Dayong Dynasty’s decline stemmed from his relatives’ power-hungry desires, attempting to manipulate the emperor into ordering the princes. This led Emperor Mingguang, Baili Chengzhi’s grandfather, to favor eunuchs and successfully counter his power-hungry relatives.
However, during the reign of Emperor Hongwu, Baili Chengzhi’s father, the influence of eunuchs reached unprecedented levels, interfering with government affairs. To curb their power, Emperor Hongwu had to turn to his relatives.
The power struggle between eunuchs and their relatives gradually escalated, especially amid the Three Kingdoms’ competition for hegemony and the threat of foreign invasions. The nation was on the brink, with undercurrents threatening to erupt into a storm at any moment.
Disliking court life in both troubled and prosperous times, Tan Chuyan sought freedom from worries and cares, aiming to leave without any reservations.
.
Walking around Feng Chilie, Tan Chuyan opened the door and stated, “Let’s go downstairs.”
Feng Chilie hesitated briefly before picking up his spear and following. Standing upstairs, he watched Tan Chuyan’s departure, pondering the words Tan Chuyan had just spoken.
‘—Is he the only one in this life?’
Feng Chilie remains uncertain about whether he could overcome this hurdle and what kind of feelings he harbored toward Tan Chuyan.
He knew it well.
He desired to discuss matters with Tan Chuyan and have him exclusively in this lifetime. However, three types of unfilial acts existed, with the gravest being lacking an heir.
With thoughts entangled and his soul trembling, Feng Chilie descended the stairs step by step.
How should he choose?
For now, he better focused on the immediate tasks.
