Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Quincy invasion—War Breaks Out.
Outside the Seireitei.
An endless tide of Quincy emerged from the gate spanning the two realms, gathering before the four great gates protecting the Soul Society.
Leading this vast army, clad in a black windbreaker, stood the emperor of the Wandenreich, ruler of the Quincy—Yhwach.
"Your Majesty, everything proceeds as planned," a handsome young Quincy, standing beside Yhwach, bowed slightly and spoke respectfully. "Once the four gates are breached, we will immediately begin exploring the internal structure of the Soul Society."
"Very well. Remember your mission," Yhwach replied, his expression stern. He nodded curtly to the young man before addressing the assembled Quincy in a deep, resonant voice. "Everything you achieve will serve as the foundation for my ascent to the highest throne."
"By your will, Your Majesty!" The Quincys, clad in white, knightlike uniforms, responded in unison, offering their absolute fealty to their emperor.
The next moment, a storm of spirit particle arrows rained down upon the Seireitei's gates.
Simultaneously, within the headquarters of the Gotei 13's First Division...
"Reporting to the Captain-Commander! The enemy has appeared at the East Gate, Kokuryōmon (Black Flow Gate)."
"Report to Captain-Commander! The West Gate, Hakutōmon (White Tower Gate), the North Gate, Seiryūmon (Azure Dragon Gate), and the South Gate, Shūshimon (Vermilion Bird Gate), have also reported enemy sightings! The stationed Shinigami are suffering heavy casualties."
"Captain-Commander, the enemy identifies themselves as subjects of the Wandenreich, wielding bows and arrows composed of spirit particles."
"Reporting to Captain-Commander, enemy identity confirmed... they are Quincy."
Shinigami messengers rushed back and forth between the First Division headquarters and the other divisions, relaying the rapidly deteriorating situation to Captain-Commander Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni and the assembled captains.
Thump!
Upon confirmation that the invaders were indeed Quincy, Yamamoto slammed his Zanpakuto, Ryūjin Jakka, into the ground like a staff, the impact echoing through the room.
"Enough! We will not allow these vermin to continue their rampage." Yamamoto roared, his voice silencing the entire First Division.
Unlike the Yamamoto of a thousand years later, who remained primarily within the First Division barracks as a symbol of stability and strength, this younger Yamamoto was far more aggressive and impetuous.
He believed in taking the fight to the enemy rather than passively defending.
The other captains of the Gotei 13 shared this sentiment.
Under their captains' orders, the Shinigami of each division prepared for battle.
As Yhwach would later observe, the Seireitei of this era resembled a group of killers operating under the guise of protectors rather than a true protective force.
"Men, follow me! War has found us!" Yamamoto's declaration was a furnace blast, his spiritual pressure igniting the air around him. Ryūjin Jakka hummed with anticipation, the blade practically radiating heat as it thirsted for battle.
"Yes, captain-commander!" The First Division Shinigami drew their Zanpakuto in unison and followed Yamamoto as he charged out of the barracks, heading towards the battlefield. Their combined spiritual pressure blazed like a wildfire.
Near the Shūshimon (Vermilion Bird Gate), one of the four main gates of the Seireitei.
The Quincy's relentless advance had transformed the area into a desolate ruin. Countless Quincy poured through the now-breached gate, an endless tide of white-clad figures.
Despite Araki's warning months prior and the deployment of substantial forces to defend the gates, the sheer volume of spirit particle arrows overwhelmed the Shinigami.
The relentless barrage descended like a rain of death, each arrow a grim reaper's scythe, cutting down the Shinigami one by one.
Despite their courage, the Gotei 13 soldiers were forced into a desperate retreat.
"Weak... too weak," a Quincy remarked dismissively. "These shinigami are nothing more than target practice."
"I truly don't understand what His Majesty is concerned about," another scoffed. "Does he truly believe these incompetent Soul Reapers pose a threat to the mighty Quincy? Ridiculous."
"I'd rather be hunting Great Hollows in Hueco Mundo than wasting my time on this trash," a third grumbled.
Among the ranks of ordinary Quincy were members of the Sternritter, relentlessly firing their Heilig Pfeil (Holy Arrows) at the retreating Shinigami.
Each arrow found its mark, claiming another life. Their arrogance grew with each kill, causing them to disregard Yhwach's earlier warnings.
"Retreat! Fall back!" a Shinigami officer yelled, his voice hoarse. "The enemy's firepower is too intense! We must regroup!"
The Shinigami defending the Shūshimon were in disarray, their ranks decimated by the relentless arrow fire. Many were wounded, and their spiritual pressure was rapidly depleting. Retreat was their only option for survival.
"Trying to escape?" a Sternritter member sneered, drawing their bow once more. A spirit particle arrow materialized and was swiftly released.
However, instead of striking the retreating Shinigami directly, the arrow pierced the knee of a soldier who had stumbled and fallen behind the others.
"Agh!" The soldier cried out in pain and collapsed to the ground.
"Sergeant Sugi!" The retreating Shinigami turned back at the cry, their faces etched with worry as they saw their comrade fall.
"Don't stop! Keep moving!" Sugi urged, clutching his injured leg. Blood soaked his trousers. "I can't go back. You must return to your squads and report the enemy's abilities to the captains."
"But Sergeant Sugi, we—" a Shinigami began, hesitant to leave their comrade behind.
"Enough!" Before they could argue further, two more spirit arrows whizzed towards them.
"Burn, Hidanmaru!" Sugi roared, releasing his zanpakuto's shikai. A torrent of flames erupted, intercepting the incoming arrows. "Go!" he commanded.
With a painful grunt, Sugi pushed himself to his feet, using his Zanpakuto as a crutch, and charged towards the approaching Quincy.
"Sugi…" The remaining Shinigami watched him go, their eyes filled with grief and determination.
"Let's go. We can't let Sugi's sacrifice be in vain!" The senior officer urged, pulling the others along.
He knew Sugi's chances were slim. His sacrifice was meant to buy them time to escape and deliver vital information.
"Understood!" Though their hearts ached, the remaining Shinigami knew they had no other choice. Retreat was their only hope.
