Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Aura of Malevolence
Garus ignored the soldiers locked in combat with the Scourge and turned toward the ruins of the academy. He needed to find out if anyone had survived.
On his way, he spotted Senator Kelly and a group of HYDRA agents searching through the rubble.
When Senator Kelly noticed the weapon-wielding, battle-hardened Garus approaching with murderous intent, fear flashed across his face. Realizing he had been spotted, he retreated to the safety of the group and shouted, "Quick, take him down!"
HYDRA agents raised their weapons and opened fire, but their bullets had no effect. Garus unleashed a Frost Shock, the icy blast freezing them into statues before they could get off more than a few shots.
"I'm a United States Senator! You can't kill me—" Kelly began, but the words were cut short as the runeblade Frostmourne pierced his chest. The sword's dark magic activated, extracting Kelly's soul and absorbing it into the blade.
With the HYDRA agents eliminated, Garus continued his search. Beneath the ruins, he sensed a faint but familiar energy signature. Summoning ghouls and gargoyles, he commanded them to clear away the debris with urgency, praying the students were still alive.
When the final slab of concrete was removed, he found a protective sphere of red magic shielding its occupants. Inside, Wanda Maximoff struggled to maintain the barrier. Exhausted and on the brink of collapse, she felt the pressure above her suddenly lift. A voice called down.
"Wanda."
The barrier dissipated, revealing Logan's bloodied and unconscious form, Wanda's pale face, and Pietro Maximoff's comparatively better condition.
"Pietro, Wanda, where are the other students?" Garus asked, his expression dark. "Why is it just the three of you?"
"They're safe," Pietro replied. "We got them to a secure location."
Relieved, Garus exhaled. "Good. As long as they're alive."
Noticing Logan's condition, he asked, "What about him?"
"He's alive," Wanda answered between breaths, "but his injuries won't heal. They've used a gene-suppression serum on him."
Garus's eyes narrowed. "HYDRA agents?"
"We didn't see them, but it's possible they were in hiding," Wanda said weakly.
Garus thought of how deeply HYDRA had infiltrated organizations like S.H.I.E.L.D., concluding that the government likely harbored them as well. This attack had all the hallmarks of their manipulation.
None of them realized that Senator Kelly himself had been a HYDRA mole.
Meanwhile, the undead Scourge soldiers, though resilient, lacked the raw strength to withstand heavy fire. Initially shaken by the grotesque appearance of their enemies, Stryker's forces quickly regrouped and formed a battle line.
The sonic cannons mounted on tanks targeted clusters of undead. Each blast sent several dismembered corpses flying, spraying green ichor instead of blood. The ichor splattered onto soldiers, unknowingly spreading a virulent plague.
Despite their vast numbers, the Scourge fell rapidly under the relentless barrage. Seeing the battle stabilize, General Stryker turned to seek an update from Senator Kelly, only to find frozen corpses in his place. His gaze then locked onto the black-armored figure standing amidst the ruins, commanding the undead.
"Colonel Norton, take him out with the tank," Stryker ordered.
"Yes, sir!" Norton responded, directing his men to aim the sonic cannon at Garus.
"Garus!" Wanda shouted in warning. Before she could finish, he summoned an Ice Wall behind him, absorbing the blast with a deafening crack. The wall fractured but held firm.
"You bastards!" Garus growled, shattering the wall with a swing of Frostmourne. "Wanda, stay here and protect Logan."
Wanda nodded as Garus advanced toward the enemy lines, his frost aura intensifying into a whirlwind of icy winds.
"What a terrifying mutant," Stryker muttered, his resolve faltering. He noticed that soldiers splashed with the undead's ichor were weakening and remembered they had no more gene-suppression serum. Conventional weapons were proving useless. Any longer, and his forces would be decimated.
"Retreat!" he commanded.
Relieved by the order, his soldiers began pulling back, bewildered by the horrors they had faced.
Garus had no intention of letting them escape. Shrouded in his icy storm, he surged forward with unrelenting ferocity.
"Colonel Norton, hold him off!" Stryker barked.
Norton hesitated, reluctant to sacrifice himself. But Stryker's glare left no room for argument. Resigned, he rallied his men to intercept Garus.
As Garus approached, Norton felt an unnatural pull, dragging him forward. He looked down to see Frostmourne piercing his chest. Darkness consumed him as his soul was wrenched from his body into the sword's abyss.
The remaining soldiers fired desperately, their bullets harmless against Garus' frost-enhanced armor. He leapt atop a tank, slicing it cleanly in two with a single swing.
Above, gargoyles swarmed the helicopters, dragging them from the sky in fiery spirals. Explosions and screams filled the air as chaos reigned.
By now, Garus' mental strength had grown, allowing him to command over two thousand undead simultaneously. However, he felt his limit nearing.
Suddenly, knowledge of a new skill flooded his mind: the Aura of Malevolence. The system had promised that as his power grew, more Death Knight abilities would unlock. The souls he had absorbed must have significantly boosted his strength.
This aura enhanced the movement speed and regeneration of both himself and his undead minions, dramatically increasing their combat effectiveness.
To Garus, this newfound power felt intoxicating, like an addictive rush. He realized he was becoming addicted to harvesting souls.
Under the influence of the Aura of Malevolence, the Scourge surged forward with renewed vigor. Their numbers, though diminished, now moved faster and struck harder, overwhelming the retreating forces.
As the battle raged, Garus stood amidst the carnage, an unstoppable force commanding his legion of the undead. The day was far from over, but his enemies would not forget the terror they faced.
