Chapter 52: Chapter 50

A week had passed since Peter had busted one of Kingpin's largest weapon shipments. Rumors were already swirling in the streets that kingpin had more stashes hidden throughout the city, and it was only a matter of time before they surfaced.

Tonight, Peter wasn't taking any chances.

Clad in his Spider-Man suit, he clung to the shadows, perched behind a parked car downtown. The amber glow of streetlights flickered against his mask as he silently tailed two disguised police officers moving cautiously through the dimly lit streets.

The taller officer, John, was glancing around nervously, clearly uncomfortable. "Do we really have to be here, Yuri? I promised my girls I'd be home before dinner... you know how they get."

Detective Yuri Watanabe shot him a look, her arms crossed. "Quit whining, John. You know the chief wants us checking this place out. Besides, try not to look so suspicious and keep your voice down will you. We're supposed to be blending in, remember?"

Peter squinted from his vantage point high above, now perched on the ledge of a crumbling brick building.

'Better not be another dead end. Kingpin been hiding his shipments ever since that incident last week... I wonder why'

Then, almost as if to cheer himself up, he chuckled softly.

'Pretty sure I was that incident.'

The two officers continued forward, scanning the empty lot.

"Are you sure this is the place?" John asked, glancing around the abandoned structure in confusion.

"The intel from Alex says this is it," Yuri replied, narrowing her eyes at the building ahead. "But it's... empty.*l"

Spider-Man tensed as Yuri took another step forward.

His spider-sense screamed.

The moment seemed to stretch in slow motion—

A barely visible tripwire caught the edge of her boot.

"YURI, WAIT!" Shouted John.

Peter launched himself off the building, twisting midair as he fired a webline. It latched onto the back of Yuri's jacket just as she realized what had happened.

With a powerful yank, he pulled her backward—

BOOOOOOOM!

The entire building exploded in a fireball. Flames erupted from the windows, glass shattering outward in a deafening blast that consumed the entire structure. A shockwave rippled through the area, knocking John off his feet while Spider-Man rolled with the impact, keeping Yuri safe from the worst of the explosion.

Smoke billowed out, choking the air as burning debris clattered around them.

"Shit," Peter muttered under his breath as his ears rang.

Footsteps.

Dozens of them.

Emerging from the smoke came several heavily armed men clad in black tactical gear, their high-tech rifles pulsing with a faint blue energy hum.

"Yuri!" John was already scrambling toward her as she coughed, trying to clear her lungs. "Are you alright? Are you injured?"

She shook her head, wincing. "Yeah I'm fine, nothings broken... it was a trap."

John's face twisted with fury as he glanced toward the wreckage. "I swear, the next time I see Alex, I'm putting a bullet between his—"

Peter cut him off, raising his hands. "Hate to break up the bonding moment, but we've got company..."

The gunmen fanned out, their weapons humming louder as they raised them. One of them, clearly the leader, sneered. "You know what I love about these toys? Cops like you can't do squat against them. Neither can Spider-Man."

Peter raised his hands higher, playing along. "Whoa, guys, easy there. I get it. Some of you are eager to—what's the phrase?—'Off some law enforcement'?But let me warn you, the whole 'attempted murder' thing doesn't come with bail packages. Think community service... but way worse."

One of the gunmen growled. "Get him!"

The trigger clicked—

Peter moved.

A flash of blue energy burst from the barrel, slicing through the air where he had been a split second earlier. He twisted mid-swing, flipping over the officers and landing between them and the attackers.

"Stay down!" he barked, webbing a shield from nearby debris and using it to deflect another blast.

"We can handle ourselves!" Yuri snapped, firing back.

John wasn't so lucky. A blast struck near his feet, sending a chunk of glowing debris hurtling toward him. He cried out as it tore through his leg, collapsing to the ground.

"John!" Yuri shouted.

"I got him!"

Peter slid into a crouch, webs shooting from both hands to yank John out of the open. But the gunmen advanced, their weapons charging brighter.

"You're outmatched, Spider-Man!" one of them called. "These aren't your friendly neighborhood toys! These babies are pure high tech weaponry and against those webs of yours well… it definitely wouldn't hold!"

Peter's eyes narrowed behind the mask.

"Yeah? Well, so is that receding hairline. Let's see which one holds up better."

He webbed the door off a nearby cop car, yanking it into his grip.

"Heads up!"

He hurled the door like a discus, striking one of the gunmen squarely in the chest and sending him flying backward before shooting his web at another causing him to trip and his his head before blacking out.

Another raised his weapon—too late.

Peter leapt into the air, kicking off the discarded car door still midair. The force sent him flipping into a somersault, grabbing the door mid-spin and smashing it into the next attacker and throwing it at another damaging the plasma gun, causing the weapon to spark violently before fizzling out.

"Told you kingpin overpays for garbage tech," he quipped, webbing another gunman's weapon and yanking it straight into his face.

"Could you stop joking for five minutes?" Yuri shouted, clutching her side while covering John.

Peter shrugged mid-swing taking out another goon. "Hey, humor is my coping mechanism."

The last two gunmen made a break for it.

"Oh, no you don't—"

A webline snagged the ankle of one, yanking him face-first into the pavement.

Yuri, wincing but determined, raised her sidearm. She fired once. The final gunman collapsed, clutching his shoulder in pain.

Silence… well along with the painful groans all around them and the burning building.

The smoke cleared.

Peter landed lightly on his feet, scanning the scene before turning back to Yuri and John.

"Okay... well... points for teamwork, but next time? Maybe don't trip a booby trap."

"Noted," Yuri muttered, standing with John's arm around her shoulder.

Peter's lenses narrowed as he glanced back at the burning remains of the building.
