Chapter 92: Fury
When they reached the front gate, the injured had all been laid on blankets on the ground while members from SHIELD's personal medical team and local paramedics attended to them. The dead people were being covered by the blankets the local law enforcement had brought.
At the same time, multiple black SUVs had already arrived. From these vehicles, agents stepped out and were brought to the surrounding parking garages and hangars. Their mission was simple: check for any survivors still hiding and recovering the bodies of the dead.
The people directing everything were Coulson and Sharon. Sharon, herself a rescue trooper, guided the medical personnel, making sure they gave care to those in urgent need of it first. Coulson, meanwhile, directed agents into the buildings, splitting them into teams and organizing the recovery of the deceased.
As Coulson and the others directed the agents and medical personel, Nick Fury had also arrived. He stood off to the side, observing the scene with Natasha Romanoff by his side. His phone buzzed constantly, but he ignored it, staring at the injured and dead with a dark expression.
"The bloodsuckers from the world governments are going to take advantage of this," Fury muttered, before turning to Romanoff. "I'm going to need a detailed report on what happened inside later."
Natasha nodded silently.
Fury then spotted Liam and Clint approaching. As they got closer, Fury began asking questions.
"What's the situation in the hangars and parking garages?" Fury asked.
"A lot of dead people, and still many survivors likely in hiding," Clint replied. "A Hydra member with a monocle most likely commanded the slaughter."
"We won't be able to do anything about that temporarily," Fury responded. "We need to get this building operational again and root out any remaining Hydra members still hiding here."
He glanced at the group. "For now, all of you can rest. The other agents will handle the rest of this."
Natasha and Clint nodded, but Liam didn't move.
"Hold on, we aren't done yet," Liam said.
Fury turned to him. "What's the problem now?"
"Don't you know what the problem is?" Liam retorted. "This could've all been prevented if you'd listened to my warnings."
Liam stepped closer, his voice was low but very clearly held anger in it. "Time and time again, I told you to be extremely careful. And most of all, I told you to never, under any circumstances, involve my grandfather. That was the agreement."
Fury's expression didn't change. "The agreement also said you'd be there in times of danger," he shot back. "While we were being hunted and forced to hide, where were you?"
Liam's eyes went cold. "Is that your excuse for nearly getting my grandfather killed?"
Fury met his gaze. "The choice to go to your grandfather's house was necessary," he said. "You weren't reachable, and when Hydra caught on, they monitored our lines. The only logical place to regroup was somewhere Hydra didn't know about but both of us did."
"If I hadn't come back when I did, I might've returned to my grandfather's funeral instead," Liam said. "You always justify your actions, Fury. But this time? It was pure recklessness—and it's going to cost you."
"Cost me what?" Fury demanded. "I've already paid. I've lost my eye, suffered and survived life-threatening injuries, and now I'm dealing with world governments ready to dismantle the organization I've put my entire life in over this chaos. So tell me, Liam—what else is it going to cost me?"
Fury's words only fueled Liam's anger more. "Also, don't forget, Liam," Fury continued, "this isn't about you or your family. This is about the bigger picture."
Liam's expression darkened further. "Bigger picture?" he repeated, his voice now filled with disdain and anger. He had ignored Fury's behaviour many times before, but Fury's blatant dismissal of his grandfather's safety was the final straw for him.
Without hesitation, Liam threw a punch straight into the middle of Fury's face. Even without Incursio summoned around him, Liam's strength was strong now, easily knocking out several of Fury's teeth and breaking his nose.
Clint instinctively raised his bow, but Natasha stepped in, placing her arm in front of him. She gestured for him to wait, silently indicating that Liam seemed to have no intention of killing Fury.
Fury fell backwards, groaning in pain as his earlier injuries started acting up. Dazed and dizzy, he raised his head and reached for his waist.
"I can tell you right now, Fury," Liam said, standing over him. "There is no bigger picture if my grandfather isn't in it. Every time I've been here, you've tried pulling something against me, and I've ignored it. But this? This crossed a line—and a big one at that."
With that, Liam turned away, opening a white rift infront of him. As the ground changed and the grass withered, ice sculptures began to appear, within them were unconscious SHIELD agents.
"These are the agents I found," Liam told Clint and Natasha. "The ice isn't a danger to them. It'll disappear in an hour or two. Make sure you check the identity on all of them before that."
He stepped through another different colored portal that appeared infront of him, disappearing as it closed behind him. After it closed, Maria and a few medics rushed over to Fury's side to tend to his injuries.
On the other side, Liam stepped back into his room. Only a few hours had passed since he left for SHIELD, meaning that it was still in the middle of the night at Kamar Taj.
'Time to work on my last problem,' Liam thought, summoning another white rift. 'I need information on Strucker's base—and as many Hydra bases as possible.'
After passing through, he found Alexander, still cold and pretty dazed. From the cuffs on the middle of his arms to the tips of his fingers, his skin had turned a deep blue color.
'Looks like he can't move them anymore,' Liam thought. 'Good. That makes this easier.'
"Hello, Alexander," Liam said, slapping his face to bring him out of his daze. "We need to talk."
When Alexander didn't respond, Liam frowned. A small hammer construct appeared in his hand. Without hesitation, he smashed it down on one of Alexander's frozen fingers.
Alexander screamed in pain as he attempted to lift his arms, trying to reach for the spot where his smashed finger used to be. Instead, his arms collided because of their weight.
With his arms now against each, Alexander desperately tried to move his remaining fingers towards the place where he had lost a finger. But with that came the realization that he couldn't move them at all anymore. Not being able to move them only added to his already bad state of mind.
'He suffered from the freezing initially, but the numbness must have given him a false sense of relief, 'Liam thought. 'Now that I've shattered his finger, not only is the pain excruciating, but he's also dealing with phantom pain from the freezing process the finger suffered earlier.'
"Do you want to talk now?" Liam asked. Seeing Alexander still writhing, Liam decided to wait until the screaming and gagging stopped.
As he waited, Liam began speaking again.
"You know, I wasn't a fan of you ordering an attack on my grandfather," he said coldly. "Had you not done that, I wouldn't have let you suffer like this."
