Chapter 13: A world in chaos
The Avengers were gathered around the large circular table, a quiet hum of activity filling the room as they watched the footage of David Faust flying into space on the big screen. The tension in the air was palpable, especially with Tony Stark pacing back and forth like a tiger in a cage.
"Are you seeing this?" Tony muttered, his eyes glued to the screen. "This guy's got more power than a nuclear reactor, and he's just... flying off into the sun like he's taking a vacation. What the hell is wrong with this world?"
"Maybe he's just a guy who doesn't care about the spotlight," Steve Rogers said, leaning back in his chair with a thoughtful frown. "But, yeah... it's hard to ignore that he's got some serious power. You don't just fly into space without being able to take the heat."
Tony scoffed. "Yeah, right. This is like if Superman went rogue and decided to make a YouTube video about it. And I'm supposed to be okay with that?" He shot Natasha a look, clearly expecting her response, to which she just shrugged.
"Am I the only one seeing this?" Tony muttered, arms flailing as he circled the room. "This guy's got more power than a nuclear reactor, and he's just... flying off into space like he's late for an intergalactic brunch!"
Steve Rogers raised an eyebrow. "He's obviously powerful, Tony. But we still don't know what he's about. You don't just go from being a regular guy to flying to the sun without some kind of backstory."
Tony shot Steve a glare. "That's the thing, Cap. We don't know his backstory. And right now, I'm starting to wonder if anyone knows his backstory. Which, by the way, is exactly what Emma Frost is thinking right now. You know, the woman who slapped a ten million dollar bounty on him? Because that is what really keeps me up at night."
Natasha, leaning back in his chair with his usual relaxed posture, furrowed his brow. "I do not understand. Why does this Emma Frost care so much for this Faust? I thought she dealt with mind games and manipulation. What could he offer her?"
Tony let out an exasperated sigh. "Because she's crazy. She sees a guy who can literally break the laws of physics, fly into space like he's on some kind of world tour, and for some reason, she's obsessed with him. I don't get it!
I mean, I am Tony Stark—genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist—and I can't get a woman like Emma to look my way without a bunch of drama. But David Faust? This guy just shows up, does whatever he wants, and gets ten million dollars attached to his name. And she wants him absolutely unharmed? What could possibly harm him!"
Natasha Romanoff, who had been quietly watching the footage, raised an eyebrow. "Sounds like someone's a little jealous." She smirked, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Emma Frost's taste in men is... interesting, to say the least. But hey, I also would like a guy who can save me from possible world-ending threats."
Tony stopped mid-pace and shot Natasha a look, eyebrows twitching. "Jealous? Me? I'm not jealous! It's just... I don't get why she would want him. He's some random guy with more power than sense. You know what Emma Frost is like. She doesn't chase just anyone. She wants him."
"Maybe she sees something you don't," Natasha teased, leaning forward, her fingers tapping the edge of the table. "And honestly... he's kind of my type. Powerful, a little chaotic, and definitely knows how to make an entrance."
Tony froze. His eyes widened for a split second, before narrowing into slits. "Wait, what?"
Natasha shrugged, unfazed. "What can I say? I like a guy who can hold his own and isn't afraid to get a little messy." She smirked again. "Guess that rules you out, huh, Tony?"
Tony stopped dead in his tracks, his jaw tightening as his eyes narrowed. "Oh, really?" he practically hissed, barely keeping the irritation out of his voice. "You're into the whole 'fly into the sun and leave chaos in your wake' thing now? You have so many types, Natasha."
Natasha just chuckled. "I can see why people are fascinated by him. There's something... magnetic about the way he just does whatever he wants. You have to admit, he's got style."
Tony crossed his arms, clearly displeased. "Oh, great. Now even you've jumped on the 'David Faust' bandwagon. This is just perfect."
Steve, clearly trying to defuse the tension, spoke up. "He's powerful, yes. But that doesn't mean he's a hero. I think we need to be cautious. Faust could be dangerous."
Tony snapped his fingers. "Thank you, Steve. Finally, someone gets it. He's not just some guy with cool powers—he's a wildcard. You can't trust a guy who flies into space like he's going for a joyride while the entire world watches." He glared at the screen again.
"Emma Frost wants him because she thinks she can control him. Maybe she sees an asset, someone she can use. But what if he decides he doesn't need her? What if he does whatever he wants and then... what happens to us?"
Thor nodded thoughtfully. "Aye, he is not one to follow rules. But he could also be a force for good. There is strength in freedom, in the will to choose one's own path. Is that not what heroes do?"
Tony scoffed. "Great, now you're going full Asgardian philosopher on me. But there's a difference between choosing your own path and being a ticking time bomb with no sense of self-control. Faust has no idea what he's dealing with. If he decides to snap one day, who's going to stop him?"
Bruce Banner, who had been quietly observing, finally spoke. "We've dealt with this before, Tony. Remember when we first found out about Thor?
The guy could have leveled the entire planet on a whim. But we took a chance, and we worked with him. Even Hulk is not particularly safety oriented. Faust... he's unpredictable, but that doesn't mean he's automatically a threat."
Tony turned to Bruce, his face dead serious. "Bruce, I don't care how much you want to analyze this. I'm not taking any chances with a guy who's already flying into space like he's about to colonize Mars. We don't know what he can do, and we don't know what he wants."
"Hold on," Bruce Banner spoke up, adjusting his glasses. "We've seen him before—back when SHIELD was tracking an anomaly. His flight isn't just basic, he's using a unique energy, something we don't even have a name for. This guy... he could be a game-changer. But the question is, is he a hero or just another force we can't control?"
Tony's voice dropped a little, more serious now. "That's what I'm saying. The moment we start calling him a 'hero,' we're just setting ourselves up for a world of hurt. Heroes don't just take off into space to escape their problems. What if he decides Earth isn't enough for him? What if we can't stop him when he turns on us?"
"I doubt he's looking to become a villain," Steve said, his voice calm but firm. "But we still need to figure out what his motivations are. Maybe he's not trying to save us... maybe he's just trying to figure himself out."
Tony raised an eyebrow. "Great. So we've got an existential crisis flying around the globe. That's exactly what the world needs right now. Let's just throw a cape on him and make him the next Tony Stark."
"Maybe we should find out," Natasha suggested. "Before anyone else does."
Tony glared at the screen again, his mind racing. "Fine. We'll find out. But if he ends up turning on us, I'm blaming all of you."
Steve leaned back in his chair, watching the footage of Faust soaring through the atmosphere. "The question is... is he a hero, or is he just another guy with too much power? We need to find that out before anyone else does."
Tony groaned. "You know what I'm worried about? That Emma Frost gets to him first. That's what really keeps me up at night. She's got the power to bend people to her will. And if she gets Faust under her thumb? The world's gonna be in huge trouble."
Thor let out a small laugh. "Aye. But if Emma Frost is smart, she would do well to remember that Faust is not so easily controlled. And you, Stark, might be wise to remember that a wild spirit can sometimes be the greatest ally."
Tony shot him a look. "Tell me that when Faust is flying over my head, trying to punch a hole in the moon. I'm not taking any chances."
"Well," Natasha said, standing up with a slight smirk, "whatever happens, I'm looking forward to seeing what he does next."
Tony didn't answer, too busy muttering under his breath about how this whole situation could go horribly wrong. Meanwhile, the rest of the team was lost in their own thoughts, wondering what David Faust's next move would be.
As the Avengers continued to ponder David's future, the uncertainty loomed large. Was he the next Superman—or was he just a ticking time bomb with cosmic powers?
Either way, they couldn't ignore the fact that he was out there... and they needed to figure out what side of the line he would end up on.
