Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The Abyss Within
Jeremy, Lila, and Bethesda began preparation for the ritual to restore the Second Pillar's resonance. The atmosphere is tense; the fractured pillar looms over them, its cracks leaking dark energy into the air. As the group studies the process detailed in the oracle's instructions, the weight of Jeremy's impending sacrifice becomes apparent. Bethesda's voice is filled with concern as she warns, "This isn't just about losing an element. The Abyss will exploit the void left behind."
Jeremy, resolute, focuses on the ritual circle Bethesda carves around the base of the pillar using her staff. The markings are a complex mixture of elemental runes and alchemical glyphs. Jeremy must channel all six elements into the ritual to stabilize the pillar, but the final step requires severing his bond to one element permanently.
As they prepare, the whispers from the Abyss intensify in Jeremy's mind. Azarial's mocking words resurface: "You don't understand the cost of balance. You are its harbinger." Jeremy clenches his fists, trying to drown out the voices, but they claw at his resolve. Lila notices his hesitation and steps forward."You don't have to do this alone," she says firmly. "We'll find another way."
Jeremy shakes his head, his voice strained. "If I hesitate, the pillar will fall. The Abyss isn't waiting for us to figure this out."
Bethesda intervenes, her tone sharp yet empathetic. "Lila's right, Jeremy. Sacrificing an element now might save the pillar, but it could weaken you when we face Azarial again. Are you sure this is the right call?"
Jeremy's silence is enough answer for the question.
With time running out, Jeremy steps into the ritual circle. Bethesda and Lila position themselves outside it, channeling their energy to create a protective barrier in case the Abyss retaliates. The fractured pillar glows faintly, resonating with Jeremy's pendant as he begins to channel his elemental powers.
One by one, Jeremy summons the elements—earth, fire, water, air, lightening, and metal—binding them to the glyphs Bethesda carved. The process is physically and mentally draining; each element he channels feels heavier, more resistant. The Abyss pushes back, its energy swirling ominously around the circle.
As Jeremy channels fire, he feels an intense pull. The Abyss seems to latch onto it, amplifying the whispers in his mind. "You can't sever this bond," the voices hiss. "Without fire, you'll be powerless. We'll consume what remains."
Jeremy falters, but Lila's voice cuts through the haze. "Jeremy, focus! Don't let it in!"
Drawing on his connection to the pendant, Jeremy steadies himself and moves to the final step: choosing which element to sever.
Jeremy hesitates, his mind racing. Each element is vital to him, but the Abyss's whispers make it clear that fire is the most vulnerable. Severing his connection to fire would weaken the Abyss's hold, but it would also rob him of one of his strongest elements.
Lila steps closer, her molten crystal blades glowing faintly. "Jeremy, I'll carry the fire for you. If you let it go, I'll take up the mantle."
Bethesda looks alarmed. "That's too risky! Elemental bonds aren't transferable like that. It could destroy both of you!"
Jeremy looks at Lila, her determination unwavering. He nods, trusting her completely. "If it's the only way, we'll do it together."
Jeremy channels his connection to fire into Lila, who braces herself as the elemental energy flows into her molten blades. The transfer is agonizing for both of them, and the Abyss fights back, sending tendrils of dark energy toward the circle. Bethesda reacts quickly, casting a radiant barrier to block the attack.
Finally, the transfer is complete. Jeremy collapses to his knees, his connection to fire severed. The pillar stabilizes, its glow brightening as the fractures begin to heal.
Before they can celebrate, the ground trembles violently. A rift opens above the pillar, and a massive Abyssal construct emerges. This creature, larger and more menacing than any they've faced, appears to be the Abyss's retaliation for their interference.
The construct's form is a twisted amalgamation of shadow and corrupted elemental energy. It roars, sending shockwaves that shatter nearby rocks.
Jeremy struggles to stand, his body weakened by the ritual. Lila steps forward, her molten blades crackling with newfound power. Bethesda joins her, casting protective wards as the construct charges.
The battle is fierce. Lila's fusion abilities prove invaluable as she combines fire and earth to create explosive projectiles. However, the construct adapts quickly, absorbing her attacks and retaliating with overwhelming force.
Bethesda uses her alchemical knowledge to target the construct's weak points, but the creature's Abyssal energy makes it nearly invulnerable.
Jeremy, despite his weakened state, summons air and water to create a swirling vortex that slows the construct's movements. "We have to hit it all at once!" he shouts.
The group coordinates their attacks. Lila delivers a devastating blow with her molten blades, striking the construct's core. Jeremy channels lightning into the weakened area, while Bethesda amplifies the attack with a burst of radiant energy.
The construct lets out a final, deafening roar before disintegrating into dark wisps.
As the group catches their breath, the rift above the pillar shifts, and a familiar figure steps through: Azarial.
He claps slowly, his mocking smile sending chills down their spines. "Impressive," he says. "You've bought yourselves a little more time. But tell me, Jeremy—how does it feel to be incomplete?, Hahahaha".
Jeremy glares at him, his exhaustion evident. "We'll stop you, Azarial. No matter what it takes."
Azarial chuckles. "Oh, you've already paid the price. Severing your bond to fire was a mistake. Without it, you'll never be able to face what's coming."
Before Jeremy can respond, Azarial vanishes, leaving behind a chilling echo: "The Third Pillar is already crumbling. You're too late."
The group gathers around the restored pillar, its glow steady but faint. Jeremy looks at Lila, her molten blades still radiating with the fire he transferred to her.
"Are you okay?" he asks, his voice laced with concern.
Lila nods, though her expression is conflicted. "I can handle this. But Azarial's right—we need to be faster. If the Third Pillar falls, we might not get another chance."
Bethesda places a hand on Jeremy's shoulder. "You made the right choice, but this is far from over. The Abyss will only grow stronger."
Jeremy clenches his fists, his resolve hardening. "Then we'll grow stronger too. No more delays. We find the Third Pillar—and we end this."
As they prepare to leave, the sky above the Second Pillar begins to clear, but the faint whispers of the
Abyss linger, a constant reminder that their fight is far from over.
