Maze of Shadows

Chapter 3: The Trial of Sacrifice

The corridor beyond the chamber was dark and narrow, the air heavy with the scent of damp stone. The orb in Emi's hands emitted a faint glow, casting long shadows on the walls as she and Yumi moved forward. The countdown on their bracelets continued to tick: 00:26:30.

"Do you think the exit is really close?" Yumi asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Emi glanced at the map again. The green circle marking the exit was nearby, but the Maze had proven it wouldn't let them leave without a fight. "We're close, but don't relax yet. The Maze always has one last trick."

Yumi nodded, clutching her arms. Her fear was palpable, but she stayed close to Emi, trusting her to lead the way.

As they turned a corner, the corridor opened into a vast chamber bathed in an eerie red light. In the center of the room was a raised platform with three pedestals. Each pedestal held an object: a dagger, a small vial of liquid, and a clock with its hands spinning erratically.

A distorted voice echoed through the chamber.

"Welcome to the Trial of Sacrifice. To proceed, you must choose what to give. Choose wisely, for the price you pay will shape the path ahead."

"What does that mean?" Yumi asked, her voice trembling.

Emi frowned, studying the objects on the pedestals. The dagger gleamed wickedly, its blade etched with strange symbols. The vial's liquid shimmered in shifting colors, and the clock seemed almost alive, its ticking loud and uneven.

"It's testing us," Emi said. "This is a choice. But we don't know what each one means."

"What if we choose wrong?"

"We'll deal with it," Emi said firmly. "Panicking won't help."

Emi stepped closer to the pedestals, her sharp eyes scanning for any clues. A faint inscription was carved into the base of each one, written in a language she didn't recognize. However, a smaller line beneath the symbols provided a cryptic translation:

1. Dagger: "Blood binds the door."

2. Vial: "Essence seals the fate."

3. Clock: "Time demands its due."

Emi's stomach twisted. "Sacrifice," she muttered. "They want something from us—our blood, our essence, or our time."

Yumi's face went pale. "What does 'essence' mean?"

"I don't know," Emi admitted. "It could mean our memories, our strength, or even our lives. And time… I don't know what that could cost us either."

Yumi's eyes filled with tears. "What do we do?"

Emi thought fast. Each option carried risks, but they had no choice but to decide. Her mind raced as she analyzed the possibilities.

"The dagger probably means blood—maybe just a little, but maybe more than we think. The vial is a mystery, and the clock… it could speed up our timer or slow it down. It might even take years off our lives."

Yumi stepped back, her fear overwhelming her. "I can't choose. Emi, I can't."

Emi placed a hand on Yumi's shoulder. "It's okay. I'll choose. But no matter what happens, we're getting out of here. Understand?"

Yumi nodded, tears spilling over.

After a moment of deliberation, Emi reached for the clock.

"Time is something I can gamble with," she said aloud, trying to sound confident. She lifted the clock carefully, its surface cold and smooth.

The room shuddered as the voice returned.

"Time demands its due."

The clock in Emi's hands shattered into glowing fragments, which swirled around her like a storm. The glow grew brighter, enveloping her completely.

"Emi!" Yumi screamed, reaching for her.

Emi felt an intense pull, as if something were being ripped from her. Memories flashed before her eyes—moments from her childhood, her family, her friends. The sensation stopped just as suddenly as it began, leaving Emi gasping for breath.

The glowing fragments faded, and the platform beneath the pedestals sank into the ground. A new door materialized at the far end of the chamber.

The voice spoke again. "The path is open. Proceed."

"Emi, are you okay?" Yumi asked, her voice trembling.

Emi nodded slowly, though her head throbbed and her heart felt heavy. Something was missing—memories, pieces of herself—but she pushed the thought aside. There wasn't time to dwell on it. Survival was the priority.

"I'm fine," Emi said, though her voice wavered slightly. She forced herself to straighten, gripping the iron rod tightly. "Let's go."

Yumi hesitated but nodded, following Emi toward the newly revealed door. The chamber grew silent behind them, the oppressive red light fading as they passed through the threshold.

The next corridor was dimly lit, its walls covered in what looked like veins pulsing with faint, crimson light. The air was thick, making it harder to breathe. Emi's bracelet now read 00:22:40.

Yumi glanced at Emi nervously. "Do you think we're almost out?"

"Maybe," Emi replied, though she wasn't convinced. The Maze had thrown too many twists at them for this to be the end.

As they moved deeper into the corridor, Emi felt an inexplicable unease. It was as though the walls were watching them, the veins twitching in time with their steps.

"Do you feel that?" Yumi whispered.

"Yeah," Emi said. "Stay close to me."

Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled, and the walls began to shift, the veins coiling and writhing like living things. The corridor twisted and reformed, blocking the path behind them.

"What's happening?" Yumi cried, clutching Emi's arm.

"It's changing the layout," Emi said, gritting her teeth. "It doesn't want us to leave."

Ahead of them, the corridor split into three paths, each one identical and equally foreboding. The map on Emi's bracelet flickered erratically, unable to provide clear guidance.

"Great," Emi muttered. "A maze within the Maze."

Emi studied the three paths, trying to determine which one to take. The leftmost path emitted a faint, rancid smell, while the middle path was eerily silent. The rightmost path was filled with distant, echoing sounds—inhuman growls and the scrape of claws on stone.

"We don't have time to stand here," Emi said, glancing at her bracelet. 00:20:15.

"Which way?" Yumi asked, her voice shaking.

Emi weighed their options. The left path smelled dangerous, the middle path felt like a trap, and the right path promised immediate threats. But if they were going to survive, they needed to move fast—and facing a known danger was better than walking into the unknown.

"The right path," Emi decided. "Stay close, and don't make any noise."

The right path was narrow and uneven, forcing them to move single file. The growls grew louder as they ventured deeper, the sound reverberating through the tight space.

Emi's grip on the iron rod tightened. Her nerves were on edge, every shadow and sound a potential threat. Yumi followed closely, her breathing shallow and uneven.

As they rounded a corner, the source of the growls came into view. A hulking creature, its body covered in jagged, chitinous plates, stood at the far end of the passage. Its glowing yellow eyes locked onto them the moment they entered.

"Run!" Emi shouted, grabbing Yumi's hand and pulling her back the way they came.

The creature let out an ear-splitting roar and charged after them, its massive claws tearing into the stone walls as it moved.

Emi's heart pounded as they sprinted back to the forked corridor. She glanced over her shoulder to see the creature closing in, its grotesque form illuminated by the dim light.

"We won't outrun it!" Yumi cried.

Emi's mind raced. They couldn't fight the creature head-on, and there was no time to pick another path. Desperation surged through her as she spotted a narrow alcove in the wall.

"In there!" she shouted, shoving Yumi toward the alcove.

They pressed themselves into the small space, holding their breath as the creature thundered past them, its heavy footsteps shaking the ground.

For a moment, the corridor fell silent. Emi peeked out cautiously, her heart still racing. The creature had disappeared down another path, but its roars echoed faintly in the distance.

"Is it gone?" Yumi whispered.

"For now," Emi said, stepping out of the alcove. "But we need to keep moving. It could come back."

They continued down the right path, moving as quickly and quietly as they could. Emi's bracelet now read 00:15:50.

The corridor finally opened into a large, circular chamber. At the center of the room was a glowing portal, its swirling light casting an otherworldly glow across the space.

"The exit," Yumi breathed, tears welling up in her eyes.

"Don't celebrate yet," Emi warned, scanning the room for traps. "The Maze won't let us leave that easily."

As they approached the portal, the ground trembled, and the creature from earlier burst into the chamber, its claws scraping against the stone floor.

"Go!" Emi shouted, shoving Yumi toward the portal.

"What about you?" Yumi cried, hesitating.

"I'll distract it! Just go!" Emi said, gripping the iron rod tightly.

The creature charged at Emi, its roar deafening. Emi dodged its claws, swinging the rod with all her strength. The impact barely fazed the creature, but it gave Yumi the chance to reach the portal.

"Emi!" Yumi screamed, standing at the portal's edge.

"Go!" Emi yelled again, dodging another swipe.

With tears streaming down her face, Yumi stepped into the portal and vanished in a flash of light.

Emi turned her attention back to the creature. Her bracelet now read 00:10:00. She needed to end this quickly or risk running out of time.

The creature lunged at her, its claws slamming into the ground where she had just been. Emi rolled to the side, searching for a weak spot. Its glowing eyes seemed vulnerable, but getting close enough to strike would be risky.

Summoning all her courage, Emi sprinted toward the creature, aiming for its face. It swung at her, but she ducked under its arm and jabbed the rod into its eye.

The creature let out an agonized roar, thrashing wildly. Emi seized the opportunity to run toward the portal.

Just as the creature regained its composure and lunged at her again, Emi leaped into the portal.

The world blurred around her as the portal engulfed her. When the light faded, Emi found herself in a new room—a stark, white space devoid of any features. The countdown on her bracelet stopped at 00:05:32.

She collapsed to her knees, gasping for breath.

"You survived the Trial of Sacrifice," the distorted voice said, echoing in the emptiness. "Prepare for the next trial."

Emi clenched her fists, her resolve hardening. The Maze wasn't done with her yet, but she wouldn't stop fighting.

She would survive.
