Chapter 17: SLEEP THE COUSIN OF DEATH PENDING

---[START]

**RUMBLING!!!**

A colossal sound erupted upon impact, sending Ken flying 13 feet through the air.

He skidded across the ground on his back after bouncing four times in a mere second.

In that one second, Ken lost consciousness only to regain it instantly.

The pain was excruciating, concentrated around his lower ribcage.

Standing slowly, he coughed up blood, his eyes now showing visible signs of bloodshot redness, as if they were about to bleed.

He fell to his knees under the sheer agony, examining the wound where his jacket had decayed to a certain extent.

It appeared that the cursed energy enveloping his body had somewhat shielded him from the attack, but at the cost of draining his energy to half its initial level.

His skin at the point of impact was a dark, bloody red, looking like it might peel off at any moment, and for some reason, his cursed energy didn't stop depleting; it seemed to decay even now.

In retaliation, he switched it off; the decay stopped. When he reactivated it, the energy regained its normal function.

Trying to stand, he found the task daunting; the pain was overwhelming, his legs felt heavy, and his vision was blurred, tinted with textures of blood.

Looking up, he saw Shigaraki approaching with confidence, followed by three companions moving in synchronized peace.

For the first time, Ken saw Shigaraki preparing for an attack, drawing closer and closer.

His instincts screamed for him to flee, but he couldn't.

His only choice, the only chance to escape certain death, was clear; his cursed energy was insufficient.

Ken could only muster one word, "Kirin!"

~~~~{Shigaraki POV}
'He looks so young, perhaps twelve. How could this child survive my attack? Master said no one would survive; he called it the strongest. So why?'
As I approached, I could see my attack had indeed affected him; he was bleeding profusely, even his eyes were leaking blood.
Yet, for some reason, I felt pity, seeing myself in him.
His eyes, I remembered them; I knew I'd seen them somewhere but couldn't recall where.
As I got closer, his eyes became clearer, wider, and then it clicked—I saw them once in myself, but no, these were different, unfazed by the dire circumstances.
Though bleeding, they seemed untouched, unaffected, as if merely observing, omnipotent. His gaze didn't acknowledge me, giving me no recognition, making me feel like an insect. It was 'disgusting,' I thought.
As I moved closer, I saw him trying to stand but failing, which made me laugh at his pathetic figure, reminding me of when everyone looked down on me—my family, my friends, my... my…but now, I look down on them.
Walking closer, I could feel his breaths growing louder , but then, the child, who seemed to be 8 feet away from death, uttered a word that changed everything. He said….
"Kirin!"
Suddenly, the child, who was at death's door, rose to his feet in an instant, his body seemingly abandoning all sense of pain.
The crows in the sky began to mob as if in protest, forming a circle that blotted out the rain.
Below this circle stood the child who had withstood my power.
The crows didn't stop moving, didn't stop singing; they continued, but for some reason, they seemed to descend with time.
Then, they came, flying at unrecognizable speeds toward the child.
My heart skipped a beat as fear consumed me; the crows reached him, and the ground where he stood was enveloped by endless flying birds of darkness—endless due to the rain's illusion, contributing to their motion.
**WOOSH!!!**
They attacked as if mechanically controlled, rushing towards us.
Adrenaline surged through me, a feeling I'd felt before , a feeling I'd felt when my father discovered my older sister and our dog killed by my own hands—it was the feeling of 'DEATH.'
Covering my face and upper body with my crossed arms, palms forward, waiting for the crows, I laughed,
"MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!" For death was too exciting, too delicious; I could feel its danger pulsing through my veins.
Then, the crows arrived, and before they could touch me, I dashed forward, wanting to embrace them first, slashing at those close enough.
As I thought, they weren't numerous, only a few, and they turned to nothing upon my touch, but not all.
Looking back, the two pieces of shit were dead, their bodies unrecognizable, clothes in ruins from the underestimated strength of the crows.
I laughed again, but as I looked for the boy I suspected had orchestrated the attack, I saw him. He was still standing, his right hand raised in a chopping gesture, radiating an indescribably evil, dark energy.
Then, the child, who was now about 8 feet from me, uttered words deep but seemingly meaningless, intended not to be understood, words that made me see him differently, words that...
"Ryu," he whispered, and my heart, mind, and body issued a warning, but it was too late.
Then, before my eyes, something emerged from the darkness and smoke, something that could only belong in movies or nightmares.
I couldn't fully see it, but it was large, standing almost 20 feet, its tail seemingly endless.
I saw it , I saw a ser…. no, I saw a …a ...yes, I lost consciousness before I could fully perceive it, but whatever it was, it was the DEVIL!
~~~~~~~{Ken Kaneki POV}

As I spoke his name, everything vanished—my crows, my strength, my cursed energy—all gone , my consciousness, 'Ryu sent him far' I thought , very far; if I had to guess, he was probably dead.

I collapsed to the ground, my head hitting the hard floor, my eyes closing gradually.

I could feel the comfort even in the concrete, the comfort of sleep ,the cousin of death pending.
