Chapter 39: Mark of the Abyss
Kenji's eyes shot open but all he could see was darkness and for a moment Kenji thought he was still in the void. But after the initial moment passed Kenji realized there was some kind of bandage covering his eyes.
"Hello? Anybody in the room?" Kenji asked out loud in a horse voice, "If someone is, I would greatly appreciate a glass of water-"
Before Kenji could finish speaking something pounced on him knocking the air out of his lungs before preparing his face with kisses, "You're awake!"
Coughing Kenji eventually caught his breath before snaking his arms around Toga's waist and pulling her soft curves against his body, "Yeah, but I feel like shit. What the hell happened?"
Toga stopped kissing Kenji and simply lay in his arms, her head resting against his chest, "No one knows...you just collapsed during training bleeding from your nose, ears and eyes. Or at least that's what Uraraka told me what happened."
Kenji grunted and he ran his hand down Toga's back in an attempt to sooth her, he could hear the fear and anxiety in her voice, "Well sorry for giving you such a scare, but I think I'll be fine."
Toga huffed clearly not trusting him but was content nonetheless, before she sat up and slid off Kenji's lap, "Alright I'm going to get Recovery Girl, try not to do anything life threatening before I get back…or ever for that matter."
Kenji made a noncommittal noise and he listened to Toga walk across the room before opening a door which closed behind her with a soft click.
Getting up with a soft grunt of pain Kenji sat up in his bed before rolling his stiffened neck and shoulders, 'I wonder how long I was out for.'
Reaching around to the back of his head Kenji tried to remove the binding around his eyes only to find it was secured by a series of metal clamps that he couldn't pry off with his fingers alone.
Kenji was wondering how long he would have to sit in darkness when the door opened again and he turned his head to face where the sound came from, "Well look who's finally awake, I have to say I've never seen such a dramatic evolution in all my career."
An elderly but exuberant voice spoke up and Kenji could make out the sound of a wooden cane clacking against the floor, "Are you the one who cared for me?"
"Of course I am, though usually I only have to deal with the occasional broken bone or severed limb. You boy, were something different, I couldn't make heads or tails of what was happening to your body." The elderly voice groaned in frustration.
"But he'll be okay right Ms. Shuzenji," Toga asked fearfully, making Kenji feel a bit guilty about the whole ordeal even if it wasn't entirely his fault.
"Truthfully Mr. Aotoma is healthier than ever, quirk evolution does marvels for the body." Recovery girl responded, "Now lean down to your right, let's get those bandages off your eyes."
Kenji eagerly followed her directions not wanting to be in darkness any longer. After a brief pause Kenji felt the tight wrappings loosen before falling away completely unraveling around his head.
"Now I suggest you open your eyes slowly, they're going to be sensitive."
Dipping his head Kenji opened his eyes cautiously, but even then it wasn't enough to stop the sudden change in brightness from stinging his eyes. Wincing Kenji squinted, letting his eyes adjust before finally picking up his head and looking at Toga and Recovery Girl.
Upon seeing his face both of the girls gasped making Kenji frown as a nervous pang rippled through his body, "What, is something wrong?!"
"Your eyes," Toga responded unhelpfully.
Luckily before Kenji could panic, Recovery Girl produced a small mirror holding it up for Kenji to see his reflection.
Kenji froze as he stared into his eyes in the mirror, the whites had turned pitch black but they were cracked like shattered ice with the fractures highlighted a dark purple. Following the network of jagged lines Kenji found his iris possessed the same coloration while his pupil had all but disappeared. Then Kenji blinked and when he opened his eyes once more, they were glowing.
He heard Toga gasp and Recovery Girl mutter something under but Kenji ignored them as he focused on the world around him. The outlines were still there highlighting every edge and curve, fortunately Kenji had the awareness not to peer too deep into the abyss, but he could feel the connection between him and the otherworldly dimensions had changed…evolved.
[Quirk evolution detached….processing]
[Vessel of the Abyss has evolved into….Vassal of the Abyss]
[Quirk: Vassal of the Abyss]
Type: Mutation/Emitter
Power Ranking: City Protector
Potential: Paragon
Description: The user of this quirk is the physical conduit for the Abyss, a dimension of absolute nothingness, warping their physical form turning their skin black and granting them demonic features. Now truly one with the Abyss the user can manifest the mysterious force to create armor and other abyssal constructs as well as create a spatial field around their body diminishing the effectiveness of hostile quirks. But most notably of all the user can glimpse through the fabric of reality seeing the abyss and the physical plane are not as separate as most think they are.
Reading over the description of his new quirk Kenji tried to take in all the changes at once. The most impactful one was the change in name, even though only one letter was different.
'A vessel is a container, simply meant to hold something, that's what I was before, an unwilling tool that could be manipulated. But now…I'm a vassal, a willing participant who gets some benefits from a greater power.' Kenji thought to himself before pushing the window aside, he would have time to go everything later.
"Kenji, are you alright!" Toga screamed at him, shaking Kenji out of his stupor.
Turning off his eyes Kenji nodded, "Sorry, I just got distracted. My eyes are fine…there better than ever actually I think I found out one of the new abilities of my quirk."
