Chapter 8: Vorithar the Eternal Vanquisher
We appeared on the other side of the portal, landing with a soft thud on the ground. I looked around, taking in our surroundings. It was a completely different world - the sky was a deep shade of purple, and the grass beneath us was a vibrant shade of blue. The air was cool and crisp, and everywhere was completely silent, as if we were the only beings in this strange place.Angelica slowly got up, wincing in pain as she tested her injured wings. She too looked around, her eyes wide with wonder and confusion at the strange new world we found ourselves in.
I looked up at the sign, trying to make sense of the strange characters written on it. It was written in a language that looked almost like Japanese, but I couldn't read it. The characters were elegant and flowing, but completely indecipherable to me.
I don't understand this language," I admitted, studying the sign closely. "Do you recognize it, Angelica?
Angelica shook her head, looking equally confused. "No, I've never seen writing like this before. It's not celestial script, nor any other language I'm familiar with.
Just as I was speaking, I suddenly felt a strange presence nearby. I looked around, my senses on high alert, when I suddenly sensed an incoming attack. I quickly grabbed Angelica's arm and pulled her to the side, dodging a powerful energy blast that narrowly missed us.
I looked up and saw a ninja girl standing a few yards away from us, holding a sword. She had black hair tied up in a bun, and was dressed in traditional ninja gear, including a black mask that covered the lower half of her face. She looked young, around our age, but there was a deadly aura about her, an experienced killer in training.
Who are you?" I called out, keeping a cautious eye on the ninja girl. "What do you want?
The ninja girl didn't respond right away, but instead studied us closely. Her eyes flicked from me to Angelica and back again, assessing us with a cold, calculating gaze.
The ninja girl suddenly dashed forward, her sword at the ready. She moved at an incredible speed, closing the distance between us in a matter of seconds.
I quickly stepped in front of Angelica, ready to defend her from the ninja girl. I held my guard, preparing myself for the incoming attack.
The ninja girl swung her sword, aiming a powerful strike at me. I dodged it narrowly, stepping to the side to avoid the blade. At the same time, I prepared to counterattack, looking for an opening in her defenses.
The ninja girl pressed the advantage, continuing her onslaught of attacks. She moved like lightning, swinging her sword with remarkable speed and precision. I barely managed to block her strikes, parrying and dodging as best as I could. Meanwhile, Angelica stood behind me, watching the fight unfold with a mixture of fear and awe. I could hear her labored breathing and the soft clench of her fists, the sound of her worry and anxiety for my safety.
Stay back, Angelica," I called out over my shoulder. "I'll handle this.
I focused my attention back on the ninja girl, who was still relentlessly attacking me. I studied her movements, looking for any patterns in her attacks. I knew I had to find a way to predict her next move and take advantage of any openings.
I clenched my fist tighter, feeling the familiar sensation of my powers welling up inside me. I focused all my energy into my fist, channeling the power of the void.
The ninja girl lunged at me again, swinging her sword in a wide arc. I waited until the last possible moment before dodging to the side, letting her overextend herself. Then, with a burst of power, I swung my void-powered fist directly at her midriff.
Just as I was about to strike the ninja girl, we were suddenly interrupted by a loud shout. "Hey! Stop fighting!
I pulled back my fist, looking towards the source of the voice. Standing a few yards away from us was a young man, dressed in a black kimono and holding a bow and arrow.
The ninja girl also paused, turning her attention to the newcomer. She looked surprised to see him, her expression betraying a hint of caution.
Who are you?" I demanded, sizing up the newcomer. "What do you want?
The young man stepped forwards, lowering his bow and arrow. He looked at me and the ninja girl for a moment, his expression unreadable.
I'm here to stop this fight," the young man said simply. "There's no need for bloodshed here.
The ninja girl scowled at his words, but said nothing, her eyes still fixed on the young man. I studied the young man, trying to gauge his intentions. He seemed sincere enough, but I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to him than met the eye.
Why should we trust you?" I asked, still guarded. "How do we know you're not working for the enemy?
The young man chuckled softly, a hint of amusement in his voice. "I'm not working for anyone," he said. "I'm just here to offer my help. The ninja girl spoke up, her voice laced with suspicion. "And why would you help us? What's in it for you?
The young man looked directly at the ninja girl, his gaze steady. "I don't want anything," he said. "I've seen enough fighting and bloodshed. I just want to help bring peace to this land.
I relaxed my stance slightly, my senses still on high alert but less guarded than before. I decided to trust him for now, at least until he proved otherwise. Alright," I said, still wary but willing to give him a chance. "We'll trust you... for now.
The ninja girl looked at him for a long moment, weighing his words. Then she lowered her sword, her expression softening slightly.
Fine," she said grudgingly. "We'll stop fighting... for now.
The tension in the air lessened a little, and a sense of peace settled over the area. The young man smiled slightly, pleased that the situation had been resolved peacefully.
I turned to the ninja girl, my guard still up. "What's your name?" I asked.
She looked at me for a moment, considering whether to answer. Then she let out a sigh and said, "My name is Kendo.
Kendo," I repeated, committing her name to memory. "And what were you doing out here, fighting us?
Kendo shrugged nonchalantly. "I was just patrolling the area when I sensed your presence," she said. "I thought you might be a threat, so I came to eliminate you. I raised an eyebrow slightly, surprised by her answer. "So you just attack anyone you come across?" I asked, with a hint of skepticism in my voice.
Kendo rolled her eyes slightly. "You're outsiders here," she said bluntly. "It's my job to protect this land from intrusion.
I ask for who your master.
Kendo raised an eyebrow at my question, surprised that I'd ask about her master. After a moment of hesitation, she answered grudginly. Yes my master is Lord Orochi," she said.
I nodded in recognition of the name. I had heard of Lord Orochi before, a powerful and ruthless warlord who ruled over this land with an iron fist. So you're one of Lord Orochi's soldiers," I stated, more as a fact than a question. "You follow his every order.
I see," I said with a hint of unease. "And Lord Orochi sent you to eliminate us because we're outsiders?
I couldn't help but roll my eyes at Kendo's words. It was clear that she was taking her orders very seriously, and was willing to follow them to the letter regardless of the consequences.
You're very loyal to your master, aren't you?" I asked, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
Kendo took offense to my tone, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Of course I am," she said. "My loyalty to Lord Orochi is absolute. I would die for him without hesitation.
I glanced over at the young man, who had been watching our conversation quietly. He returned my gaze, his expression unreadable but his eyes seemed to convey a hint of concern. I could tell he was not happy with the way things were going, and I could sense that he wanted to intervene. But he held himself back, for some reason keeping his thoughts to himself.
I turned my attention back to Kendo, taking a deep breath before speaking.
"You realize that Lord Orochi is not the only ruler in this land, don't you?" I said, keeping my voice calm and rational.
Kendo looked at me with a mixture of confusion and irritation. "What are you talking about?" she asked, her tone brisk and impatient.
There are other leaders, other powers in this land," I explained. "And Lord Orochi is not the only one who has control over parts of it.
Kendo scoffed at my words, her expression dismissive. "You're wrong," she said. "Lord Orochi rules this land with an iron fist. There is no one else who can challenge his authority.
I turned my back on Kendo, gesturing for Angelica to follow me. We walked away, leaving the ninja girl, come on Angelica let's go. We walked away, leaving the ninja girl standing there, watching us with a mixture of puzzled and annoyed expression.
I looking at the young man and ask him, do you know where the nearest town is.
The young man nodded in response and gestured further down the path.
"There's a small town not far from here," he said. "If you keep walking in this direction, you should reach it within a few hours.
I thanked him and turned to Angelica, who was still looking a bit shaken by the encounter with Kendo.
"Are you alright?" I asked, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
She nodded, her expression calming slightly under my touch. "I'm okay," she said, her voice still a little shaky. "Just a little shaken, that's all. I gave her a reassuring smile and squeezed her shoulder gently. "Don't worry," I said. "We're going to be alright. We're going to find help in that town, I'm sure of it.
Angelica managed a small smile back, her expression a little hopeful. "I hope you're right," she said, her voice soft and quiet.
I held onto her hands tightly, reassuringly, and we began walking once again, following the path the young man had pointed out. As we walked, I kept a vigilant eye on our surroundings, still wary of any potential threats. I couldn't shake the feeling that we might encounter more of Lord Orochi's soldiers, or worse, the warlord himself.
After a few hours of walking, the small town came into view. It was a small, nondescript settlement, built around a central square adorned with a tall, stone well. As we walked into the town, we could see a few townspeople milling about, going about their daily business. Some of them glanced in our direction as we passed, their expressions curious and wary.
As we walked further into the town, I could feel a prickle of unease wash over me. There was a subtle change in the air, a hint of something that was all too familiar. I knew immediately that Kendo was nearby, no doubt still on the lookout for us.
I stopped suddenly, my senses on high alert. I whispered to Angelica, keeping my voice low.
"Kendo's here," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "She's nearby. We need to find cover, quick."
Angelica's eyes widened in alarm, her expression frightened. She looked around nervously, searching for a place to hide. But the town square was too open and exposed. There were no alleys or buildings to duck into, nothing to hide behind. We were completely exposed.
I raised my voice, yelling out into the town square. "Kendo!" I shouted, my voice ringing out loud and clear. "We know you're there! Come out and show yourself!
There was a moment of silence, then a rustle from a nearby alleyway. Kendo stepped out into the open, her expression cool and calm, as if she had expected us to call her out.
You're pretty perceptive," she said, her voice cool and nonchalant. "I wondered when you'd notice me.
Why are you following us?" I asked, my voice a mixture of annoyance and skepticism. I was sent to keep an eye on you," Kendo replied, her tone dispassionate. "Lord Orochi wants to know who you are and what you're doing in his land.
Well, we're not interested in causing any trouble," I said, my voice firm. "We're just passing through, looking for a place to rest and replenish our supplies.
Suddenly, I felt a shift in the air, a subtle change in the atmosphere that told me danger was approaching. I tensed, my senses on high alert as I tried to pinpoint the source of the impending danger.
Kendo's eyes widened in recognition as the monster appeared. "It's one of Orochi's demons," she said, her voice firm but tinged with an edge of fear.
Kendo nodded, her expression grim. "They call it Vorithar, the Eternal Vanquisher," she confirmed. "It's one of Orochi's most fearsome generals. It's known for its ferocity and brutality.
