Chapter 54: The Study Session (54)

The air was heavy with the faint scent of freshly sharpened pencils and the crisp rustle of pages turning. The midterm exams loomed closer, casting a shadow of anxiety over Haruto's class. As students hurried to prepare, Aiko had an idea that would bring them together.

"Why don't we have a group study session?" she proposed during lunch, sitting with Haruto and a few classmates.

"A study session?" Haruto echoed, raising an eyebrow.

"Yes," Aiko said, her tone determined. "We can help each other with difficult subjects. It's better than stressing out alone."

Haruto couldn't argue with her logic, though he wasn't thrilled about spending extra hours immersed in textbooks. Still, Aiko's enthusiasm was hard to resist.

By the following afternoon, Aiko had secured the school library's study room and sent invitations to their classmates. About a dozen students showed up, books and notebooks in hand, wearing expressions that ranged from eager to reluctantly curious.

"Thanks for coming, everyone," Aiko said, standing at the front of the room like a teacher. "We'll split into smaller groups based on the subjects we need help with. If anyone feels stuck, just ask, and we'll figure it out together."

The room buzzed with activity as the students divided themselves. Haruto ended up in the math group with Aiko, along with two others who shared his dread of algebra.

For the first hour, Haruto struggled to focus. Numbers and formulas blurred together as his mind wandered. Aiko, however, was in her element. She patiently explained equations, breaking them down step by step.

"Haruto," she said, snapping him out of his thoughts, "you're overthinking it. Look here."

She leaned over his notebook, pointing to a half-finished problem. Her proximity made his heart skip a beat, but he tried to focus on her explanation.

"You just need to isolate the variable," she said, writing out the next step. "See?"

Haruto nodded slowly. "That... actually makes sense."

Aiko smiled. "Told you it's not so bad."

Meanwhile, the other groups were making progress. In the science corner, Kenta was enthusiastically explaining chemical reactions, using sketches of beakers and flames to illustrate his points. In the literature group, a spirited debate broke out over the meaning of a poem they were analyzing.

The room was alive with collaboration, and even the students who initially seemed disinterested were now engaged.

After a short break, the session shifted to history, one of Haruto's stronger subjects. This time, he found himself taking the lead, explaining the causes of a major war to a group of attentive listeners.

"So, the treaty wasn't just about peace," he said, gesturing to a diagram he'd drawn on the whiteboard. "It was also a power play."

Aiko watched from the sidelines, her eyes shining with pride. When the group applauded Haruto's explanation, he felt a surge of confidence.

As the evening wore on, the initial awkwardness dissolved, replaced by a sense of camaraderie. Students shared tips, swapped stories about their favorite teachers, and even laughed over silly mistakes in their notes.

By the time they wrapped up, everyone agreed that the session had been a success.

"Thanks for organizing this, Aiko," one student said as they packed up their books.

"You're a lifesaver," added another.

Aiko waved off their praise with a modest smile. "We all helped each other. That's what matters."

As they walked home, Haruto fell into step beside Aiko. "You really have a knack for this, you know," he said.

"For what?"

"Bringing people together. Making things less... stressful."

Aiko looked thoughtful. "I just think it's easier to face challenges when you're not alone. Don't you?"

Haruto nodded, realizing how much lighter he felt after the session. "Yeah. You're right."

The streetlights flickered on as they approached their neighborhood. Haruto glanced at Aiko, wondering how she always seemed to know what people needed.

"Thanks for helping me with math," he said.

Aiko grinned. "Anytime. And thanks for helping with history. I think you might've saved half the class."

Haruto chuckled. "Guess we make a good team."

As they reached their homes, Aiko turned to him with a smile that warmed the cool night air. "Same time next week?"

"Yeah," Haruto said, surprising himself with how quickly he agreed. "Same time."

And with that, they parted ways, both carrying a renewed sense of determination for the challenges ahead.
