Chapter 65: The Accidental Hug (65)
The day started like any other, with Haruto and Aiko walking to school together. The cherry blossoms were shedding their petals, leaving a trail of pink and white along the sidewalks. The air was cool, carrying the faint scent of spring. They chatted about the upcoming school sports day, their voices light and teasing as they debated which of them would win the relay race.
"I'm telling you, I'll beat you easily," Aiko said with a grin, her confidence making Haruto laugh.
"You're forgetting I have longer legs," Haruto teased back, earning a playful nudge from Aiko.
As they reached the school gate, Aiko noticed that Haruto's shoelace was untied. Without thinking, she stopped him with a light tug on his sleeve. "Hold on," she said, crouching down.
"What are you doing?" Haruto asked, confused.
"Your shoelace is undone. If you trip, you'll blame it on me later," Aiko said, her voice laced with mock seriousness.
Haruto blinked, a bit flustered. "I can do it myself, you know."
"Too late," she said, tying the laces with quick precision before standing up again. "There, all set."
Haruto scratched the back of his neck, mumbling a soft, "Thanks."
The morning classes passed uneventfully until it was time for lunch. Haruto and Aiko, along with a few friends, decided to eat in the schoolyard. They found a shady spot under a large tree, where the sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled patterns on the ground.
As they ate, their conversation turned to lighthearted teasing. Riku, always the jokester, began recounting a story about Haruto's less-than-graceful fall during a previous sports day.
"And then—bam! Haruto was flat on his face," Riku said, laughing so hard he nearly spilled his drink.
Haruto groaned. "Do you have to bring that up?"
Aiko, trying to stifle her own laughter, placed a reassuring hand on Haruto's shoulder. "Don't worry. This year, I'll make sure to win so no one remembers that."
"Gee, thanks," Haruto said dryly, though he couldn't help but chuckle.
After lunch, the group decided to play a quick game of tag before heading back to class. The schoolyard was filled with students enjoying the break, and the air buzzed with energy. Haruto ended up being "it," chasing after Aiko and the others with a determined grin.
"You can't catch me!" Aiko called out, darting around a corner.
"Oh, we'll see about that!" Haruto shot back, quickening his pace.
Aiko's laughter echoed as she dodged and weaved, but just as she turned sharply to avoid Haruto, she miscalculated. Her foot slipped on a patch of damp grass, and she stumbled backward. Haruto, unable to stop in time, reached out instinctively to steady her.
What happened next felt like slow motion. Aiko fell against him, and Haruto's arms wrapped around her reflexively to keep her from hitting the ground. They both froze, their faces mere inches apart.
The world seemed to fade away for a moment, the chatter and laughter of their classmates dimming. Aiko's wide eyes locked with Haruto's, and a deep blush spread across both their faces.
"Uh… are you okay?" Haruto finally managed to ask, his voice a little shaky.
Aiko nodded quickly, her cheeks burning. "Y-Yeah, I'm fine."
Realizing the position they were in, Haruto let go and stepped back, his heart pounding. "Sorry about that," he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck.
"It's… okay," Aiko replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
Their classmates, who had been watching from a distance, erupted into a mix of laughter and teasing.
"Looks like Haruto's got some secret moves!" Riku called out, grinning from ear to ear.
"Careful, Aiko," another friend teased. "He might sweep you off your feet—literally!"
Haruto groaned, his face heating up even more. "Can we not make a big deal out of this?"
Aiko, still flustered, managed a weak smile. "It was just an accident, okay?"
But the teasing continued as they made their way back to class, leaving both Haruto and Aiko feeling self-conscious.
Later that day, as they walked home together, the memory of the accidental hug lingered between them. Neither brought it up, but the atmosphere was noticeably different—quieter, more thoughtful.
As they reached Aiko's house, she hesitated before turning to Haruto. "Thanks for catching me earlier," she said softly.
Haruto glanced at her, his expression a mix of embarrassment and sincerity. "Yeah, of course. I wasn't going to let you fall."
Aiko smiled, the warmth in her eyes making Haruto's heart skip a beat. "Goodnight, Haruto."
"Goodnight, Aiko."
As Aiko disappeared inside, Haruto stood on the sidewalk for a moment, staring at the door. His thoughts were a jumble, but one thing was clear—something had shifted between them. Something neither of them could quite name yet.
