Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Secrets Unveiled
Devin and Elara followed Theodora as she led them through the dimly lit corridors of the slave quarters. The air was thick with the musty scent of old stone and damp earth. They moved quickly but quietly, their senses heightened by the fear of being caught.
As they walked, Elara couldn't help but feel a strange sense of curiosity about Theodora. There was something unique about the young girl, something that set her apart from the others. She watched as Theo moved with an almost ethereal grace, her small frame slipping through the shadows like a wisp of smoke.
"Elara's colors shine like mine, but different and stronger," Theo said suddenly, breaking the silence.
Devin looked puzzled. "What do you mean by colors, Theo?"
Theodora hesitated, her brow furrowing as she tried to find the right words. "I don't know how to explain it. They just come out of people and vibrate. The colors tell me who is good and bad and if someone is special. My tricks help me too, like being able to disappear for a little at a time."
Elara and Devin exchanged a glance, both intrigued and a little bewildered by her explanation. "How long have you been able to do these special things?" Elara asked gently.
Theo's expression grew somber. "As long as I can remember. But my parents always told me to keep it a secret. They said if anyone else found out, they would come and take me away."
Curiosity piqued, Elara asked, "What happened to your parents, Theo?"
A shadow passed over Theo's face as she recalled her past. "I hid my tricks for most of my life. But one day, I was being bullied, and I got really angry. Small flames appeared on my hands, and I burned the bully. I was terrified and ran home to tell my parents what happened. But it was too late. The bad men were already coming. They broke down the door and took me away."
Devin's eyes widened in shock. "That's horrible. Do you remember what happened after that?"
Theo shook her head. "I don't remember much. I woke up here as a slave. At first, I thought my tricks were gone, but little by little, they came back."
Devin leaned in, his curiosity piqued. "Have you had any help with your tricks?"
A small smile crept onto Theo's face. "An old lady came to visit me, at first in my sleep and sometimes in the In-Between. She helped me get my 'tricks' back, as she calls them."
As Theo led them deeper into the maze of corridors, Elara and Devin couldn't help but feel a growing sense of awe and admiration for the young girl. She was more than just a slave; she was special, a beacon of hope in the darkness.
Finally, they stopped in the middle of a darkly lit hallway. Theo pointed at an empty wall. "Here," she said.
Elara and Devin looked at the wall, seeing nothing. Their confused faces must have been apparent, because Theo started tapping the bricks in a specific sequence. Each brick glowed for a second before quickly fading.
After completing the sequence, she tapped one final brick in the middle. The outline of a door began to glow, and a low rumbling sound filled the air. The outline solidified into the edges of a door, and with a push from the tiny girl, it slowly opened.
Elara and Devin stood there in shock, unable to believe their eyes. Theo took a step into the darkness, turning to ask, "Coming?" before disappearing completely into the black void beyond.
