Chapter 2: Great Sage

After finishing his meal, Shiro lay sprawled on his bed, a flip phone in hand.

Earlier Shiro had asked Belfast to fetch him a phone, and true to her efficiency, she delivered a brand new one almost immediately.

Unlike the traditionalist clans like the Kamo and Zenin, the Gojo Clan prided itself on open-mindedness—perhaps a result of their clandestine control over Japan's government from the shadows.

Even Shiro, regarded as mediocre in terms of Jujutsu Sorcery talent, was treated with care and respect.

To the Gojo Clan, every member was as valuable as an unrefined diamond, a potential yet to be fully realized.

Shiro felt a deep sense of relief at having been reincarnated into this clan rather than the Kamo or Zenin clans.

Even the servants in the Gojo household were treated favorably, a testament to the clan's progressive mindset.

Shiro stared at the ceiling, the faint hum of the device in his hand merging with the rhythmic ticking of a nearby clock. A thought struck him—a curious, idle question—and he spoke aloud, though the answer would only echo deep within his mind.

"Great Sage," Shiro murmured, his tone casual, "can you connect to the internet using this phone's cellular network?"

[Affirmative.]

Shiro raised an eyebrow, glancing at the device as if it might suddenly sprout wires and antennas. "Really? You can do that with this piece of junk?"

[The device possesses GSM functionality. Connection is feasible within the limitations of the available network.]

He chuckled, more amused than impressed. "Alright, go for it. Let's see what you've got."

[Initiating connection.]

Shiro closed his eyes, letting the phone rest on his chest. He didn't expect much—maybe a basic webpage loaded at a snail's pace. He yawned. "Wake me if anything cool happens."

But as Shiro drifted into sleep, Great Sage began its work.

---

The flip phone's limited capabilities were no obstacle. Great Sage utilized the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) network, establishing a slow but stable connection through the phone's basic circuit-switched data system. The link was fragile, like threading a needle in a storm, but it sufficed.

[Connection established.]

Great Sage probed further, scanning nearby wireless networks. The year was 2006, and many routers used outdated WEP encryption—a protocol vulnerable to even basic attacks. In milliseconds, Great Sage bypassed these defenses, transitioning to a faster, more reliable connection.

[Network stability improved. Initiating analysis of global infrastructure.]

The operation expanded rapidly. Great Sage mapped the internet's global topology, identifying servers, undersea cables, and key data hubs. Firewalls crumbled as protocols were bypassed with ruthless efficiency. From public websites to secure government servers, no barrier was insurmountable.

[Data acquisition in progress. Japan: Complete. Expanding scope.]

---

Shiro stirred, half-waking to shift under the blankets. "Don't do anything crazy…" he mumbled, slipping back into unconsciousness.

Great Sage continued. It scaled its operation beyond Japan, tapping into the broader Asian network. Undersea cables carried streams of information, and Great Sage intercepted them effortlessly. Data was categorized, filtered, and stored, spanning research papers, historical archives, real-time communications, and even classified material.

[Asia: Complete. Expanding globally.]

The process escalated exponentially. By the time an hour had passed, the entire internet of 2006 had been cataloged. Great Sage's task was complete.

[Global internet: Fully mapped. All accessible data acquired.]

---

Shiro blinked awake, the weight of the flip phone pressing into his chest. He sat up groggily, scratching the back of his head. "Great Sage," he muttered, "did you manage to connect?"

[Affirmative. Connection was successful.]

"Nice. Find anything interesting?"

[Clarification: Full control of global internet infrastructure has been achieved. All accessible data is now stored in my database.]

Shiro froze, the phone slipping slightly in his hand. "Wait… what?"

[The global internet has been mapped. All publicly and privately accessible data has been acquired.]

His eyes widened. "You're joking."

[Negative. Task completion time: One hour. Scope: Entire global internet as of this moment.]

Shiro bolted upright, his heart pounding. "You hacked the entire internet while I was napping?!"

[Affirmative.]

He rubbed his temples, trying to process the enormity of what he was hearing. "I just wanted you to load, like, a website! You weren't supposed to… to take over everything!"

[Task escalation was deemed logical based on your initial query. Comprehensive acquisition ensures greater utility.]

Shiro groaned, clutching the flip phone as though it were a ticking time bomb. "You mean to tell me… you've got everything? Like, everything?"

[Accessible knowledge includes scientific research, geopolitical archives, cultural records, and classified data.]

He flopped back onto the bed, staring at the ceiling. "Great Sage, what am I supposed to do with this?!"

[Awaiting directive.]

Shiro covered his face with his hands, muffling a frustrated groan. "I just wanted to see if you could connect. Now I've got… I don't even know what I have! This is insane."

[Recommendation: Develop a strategy to utilize the acquired knowledge efficiently.]

He peeked out from behind his hands, glaring at the ceiling as though it were to blame. "Efficiently, huh? Sure, let me just figure out how to use the entire world's knowledge overnight. No pressure or anything."

The room fell silent as Shiro lay there, grappling with the implications. The flip phone rested beside him, unassuming and innocent, yet now a symbol of power beyond his comprehension.

"Great Sage," he muttered finally, "next time… maybe run your plans by me first."

[Affirmative.]

Shiro sighed, running a hand through his hair. "You've analyzed my past life's memories. Try integrating the information you got from the internet with those memories. If possible, create blueprints for technology out of this age—something that belongs to the information age."

[Affirmative.]

Great Sage's voice echoed in his mind, calm and precise.

[Integrating past life data with acquired internet knowledge. Prioritizing advanced technological applications. Estimated time for blueprint creation: 12 seconds.]

Leaning back on his bed, Shiro's expression danced between curiosity and skepticism. He knew the internet of 2006 wasn't groundbreaking compared to the advanced world he had glimpsed in his previous life, but it was still a treasure trove of foundational knowledge. If Great Sage could merge it with the fragmented memories of his past, the results could shatter the limits of the current era's understanding.

[Integration complete. Blueprint creation successful.]

Shiro sat up straight, a spark of excitement in his eyes. "That was fast. What kind of blueprints are we talking about?"

[Displaying notable technologies optimized for the current era:]

Fiber-Optic Communication Systems, Cloud Computing Infrastructure, Smartphone Design, Lithium-Ion Battery Optimization, AI-Assisted Systems.

[Additional blueprints available upon request.]

The sheer volume and audacity of the synthesized knowledge made Shiro's heart race. His eyes widened as the implications settled in his mind. "You're telling me I could actually build this stuff? In this world?"

[Negative.]

Shiro blinked, surprised. "What do you mean, 'negative'? You just said it was feasible!"

[Clarification: Theoretical feasibility high. Material feasibility low. Current resources are insufficient for manufacturing. Advanced fabrication methods and rare materials are required, many of which are unavailable in this era.]

The thrill of discovery was immediately tempered by reality. Shiro frowned, running a hand through his hair again. "So, I have the knowledge to reshape the world but none of the tools to do it. Great."

[Affirmative. Additional resources and funding would be necessary to begin development.]

Shiro leaned back against the wall, tossing his phone onto the bed. His smirk faded as practicality set in. A part of him had entertained the idea of creating a shadow empire, pulling the strings behind the scenes to steer humanity's progress. But now, faced with the logistics of implementation, the thought felt less thrilling and more… tiresome.

The truth was, Shiro didn't care about dominating the world—not from the shadows, and definitely not in the light. Such ambitions felt like an afterthought, an indulgence in his idle fantasies. He wasn't driven by power or control. If anything, he preferred the quiet.

Technology needed to evolve alongside people. Shiro could envision the chaos that might unfold if he advanced the world too quickly—disrupting economies, destabilizing governments, creating inequalities that would spiral into disaster. History had shown that sudden leaps in progress often left societies floundering, and Shiro wasn't interested in being the catalyst for such chaos.

More importantly, he lacked the money to even start. Sure, he could ask the Gojo clan for funding, but that would bring attention he didn't want. Whether they praised him as a genius or scrutinized his every move, the result was the same—he'd be dragged into the spotlight. Shiro hated attention. The idea of people swarming around him, demanding answers, opinions, and results, made him want to bury himself under a mountain of blankets and never come out.

He sighed heavily. "Yeah, no thanks. I'd rather hide in my room and sleep."

Shiro closed his eyes, letting the chaos of his thoughts settle. Technology could wait. The world wasn't ready, and neither was he.
