Chapter 60: Chapter 57: Hades, I Choose You!
The Endurance, Dueling Cage.
Now.
<+>
The once spacious dueling hall now seemed a bit cramped, as the crowd that had gradually filled the darkened area below the stage stood silently, their gazes fixed on the duel above.
The towering figure of the Primarch still sat below, his face shrouded in shadows and mist, making it difficult to discern his expression.
But the soldiers near Mortarion could all feel the overwhelming pressure and displeasure emanating from him.
The reason? Likely the chaotic warp energy fluctuating on stage.
Besides the Xenos Overlords from Barbarus, no one had ever dared to brazenly use warp powers in front of Mortarion like this.
The brilliant white light of the warp danced wildly on the stage, distorting space slightly from the powerful warp energy, while frost crept across the entire duel cage.
Ugo held a sword covered in frost, with jagged ice hanging from it, yet the white flames of warp energy flowed over the blade like serpents.
Enhanced by warp energy, Ugo's body glowed faintly, his eyes burning with sparks of psychic energy from his rage.
Such a strong display of warp energy!
Even during duels between Librarians, it would never be this exaggerated. Librarians, who valued wisdom and order, would never so recklessly expose their warp powers. They were like miserly caretakers, for excessive use of warp energy could lead to exhaustion—or worse, madness.
But Ugo was enraged beyond reason. He glared at the terrified Calas Typhon on the opposite side of the cage.
This traitor!
And he was determined to show everyone, right here on the dueling stage, that the Librarians of the Death Guard were not to be trifled with. Even though they were restricted by the Primarch, they could still stand their ground within the Legion with their own strength!
The bell rang mercilessly, signaling Typhon's defeat.
Seeing the venomous look in Ugo's eyes, Calas could no longer hide his abilities. Though weaker than Ugo, a faint ripple of warp energy surrounded him as well.
But how could a newly-inducted psyker, with only basic training, stand a chance against a battle-hardened Librarian?
Ugo, as if showing off, muttered an incantation under his breath and unleashed a crushing wave of warp energy towards Typhon. Then, with a flick of his sword, a fiery serpent roared towards Calas Typhon's face.
Pinned down by the psychic pressure, Typhon could only raise his scythe in a desperate attempt to block the incoming flame. At the same time, he chanted a defensive spell, summoning an invisible warp shield in front of him.
To be fair, Typhon's psychic talent was outstanding among psykers, but the vast gulf in experience and skill rendered all his efforts futile.
It's like a mantis trying to stop a chariot.
The fire serpent shattered the shield effortlessly and shot towards Typhon without obstruction. A brilliant explosion of white light followed, and Calas was sent flying off the stage, barely clinging to life as he lay on the ground.
The audience was dead silent.
Ugo's full display of psychic power had far surpassed what anyone had ever imagined for a duel. On the battlefield, Librarians usually set traps, ambushed enemies, or communicated through prophecies, rarely engaging in direct combat.
But today, they had seen it.
Even some of the veteran Terran soldiers in the legion now realized how much they had underestimated the Librarians, often regarded as mere support.
Meanwhile, the Barbarus-born soldiers stirred. A few of Typhon's closer comrades gathered around him, while a medic rushed over.
On stage, Ugo's psychic energy showed no signs of fading. He stood firm, his gaze fixed on the Primarch's direction as the space around him distorted more and more menacingly.
Aside from the mild commotion among the Barbarus-born troops, the rest of the hall remained silent.
The metal censer on Mortarion's body clanged softly.
He uncrossed his arms, about to stand—
But suddenly, Mortarion stopped.
The sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed through the hall, growing clearer by the second.
Hades was nearly dragged in by Vorx, hurriedly entering the hall, and just as they arrived, the Primarch spoke.
His raspy whisper echoed gently but clearly through the hall.
"Hades, go."
Huh?
A confused Hades looked at the warp energy crackling in the air on the stage, the space so distorted it seemed warped, and at the person in the middle—clearly someone beyond an ordinary Astartes.
At that moment, he seemed to understand what had just happened.
Mortarion, did you just send me in like some kind of Pokémon?
Dark-type versus Psychic-type, huh?
In the duel hall, the white light mercilessly outlined both figures, while the crackling of warp electricity faintly pulsed through the air.
Hades stood on stage, scythe in hand.
The training scythe that Calas Typhon had wielded was long since shattered by warp energy. Seeing Hades hesitate slightly, Ugo pulled another scythe from his weapon rack and tossed it over.
"Thanks."
Hades caught the scythe in one hand, instinctively offering his thanks.
Ugo raised an eyebrow.
Polite, but that's not a reason for me to go easy on you.
Hades, oblivious to Ugo's change in expression, raised his scythe and assumed a stance, his mind racing.
Looking at the slightly distorted space in front of him, Hades judged that Ugo's psychic abilities were stronger than most of the Xenos Overlords from Barbarus but still not at the level of Necare.
If it had been the Hades from Barbarus, he would have been confident in winning this fight.
But now…
His Black Domain could no longer suppress the surrounding space as it once did, and the maximum range of his suppression barely extended to his skin!
The scythe in his hand wasn't his Obituary, which could channel his Black Domain, meaning he couldn't use it to extend his abilities either.
Due to the changes in his Black Domain, Hades was now at a significant disadvantage.
But Mortarion didn't know about this. He still thought Hades was as strong as before.
So, when he heard Hades' footsteps earlier, he decided to send him up.
What no one knew was that Mortarion had originally intended to enter the duel himself!
Ugo's actions had been nothing short of a direct challenge to Mortarion.
Hades' sudden appearance had interrupted Mortarion's initial plan and ultimately saved Ugo's life.
Now, standing on the stage with a training scythe in hand, Hades faced Ugo, both dressed in standard combat attire as warp sparks erupted around Ugo.
To win, there was only one option left.
Hades looked at Ugo.
Well… you're using warp powers, so I guess I don't have to stick to the usual rules either, right?
