Chapter 38 - Crouch Down, Hands on Head, Sweep the Area!
【Total fried sausages sold: 54. Task rewards: Yuan +29,500, Allocatable Career Experience +5, Snack Vendor Career Recommendation Letter】
【All fried sausages have been sold out. This temporary task is now complete.】
In the department store, each person held a fried sausage, silently chewing.
Meanwhile, Meng Xu sat in a corner with a somber expression, appearing somewhat melancholic.
His mood swings had left Kong Weizhen and the others terrified, clueless about what had transpired, and shivering in their seats, enduring every excruciating minute.
The reason for Meng Xu’s gloomy demeanor was that … the fried sausages were sold out.
“Damn it, I should’ve made them buy only one each instead of three. I should’ve said there was a limit, no more than one per person.”
Meng Xu regretted it deeply, feeling he had made a grave mistake.
But regret was useless now. What could he do?
The fried sausages were gone, and he had no way to conjure more.
Sighing deeply, Meng Xu followed the procedure, making friends one by one, raising his number of friends to 14.
Perhaps the new friends were still a bit shy. Meng Xu looked around and noticed everyone was unusually silent, which puzzled him.
“Are there only fourteen of you here?”
Meng Xu asked with concern, glancing around. Out of the corner of his eye, he suddenly noticed something odd in the corner near a changing room—two figures hanging upside down.
“Huh?”
Meng Xu made a noise of surprise and, upon closer inspection, realized they weren’t figures but bodies.
Meng Xu walked over to inspect them carefully.
They didn’t have the characteristics of zombies; they appeared to be humans.
This piqued Meng Xu’s curiosity.
He had seen plenty of zombies, zombie corpses, and dismembered human remains.
But complete human corpses? This was a first!
It felt like spotting a panda in a zoo!
At that moment, everyone’s eyes were on Meng Xu.
Kong Weizhen felt a flurry of emotions, while the others looked on with schadenfreude.
“Look at him, scared out of his wits! Just wait until Brother Li comes out, he’s in for it!”
“Better hang him too, here… no, hang him outside the department store entrance! Make an example out of him, show everyone what this place is!”
“Uh? That might be a bit too much. We’re all just trying to survive…”
“…”
The group whispered among themselves, most of them gloating over Meng Xu’s situation. The fitness instructor, in particular, seemed especially pleased.
Knowing the ‘truth,’ Kong Weizhen remained silent, his mind racing with anxiety, fearing that any incident might provoke Meng Xu.
After his curious inspection, Meng Xu leisurely returned to the second-floor gathering area—a space that seemed to be a sports shoe store.
Looking around, Meng Xu spotted a common sight in many malls: a massage chair. He swaggered over and took a seat. Noticing a small plate of candies on a nearby table, Meng Xu casually picked up a piece of chocolate, unwrapped it, and popped it into his mouth.
“What’s the deal with those two hanging over there? What did they do?”
“They offended Brother Li.”
The fitness instructor, seeing Meng Xu’s nonchalant behavior, smirked and stepped forward, speaking with smug confidence.
“You’re sitting in Brother Li’s spot, eating Brother Li’s stuff. You’re done for!”
His expression radiated the smug satisfaction of someone reveling in another’s misfortune.
“So this ‘Brother Li’ is that tyrannical, huh? Offending him means death? What happened to the law?!”
Seeing this, Meng Xu was puzzled but nonchalantly picked up another piece of corn candy, “So, you mean to tell me that eating two pieces of your candy is enough to have this Brother Li come after me?”
Meng Xu found the situation odd.
Yes, the apocalypse had caused upheaval in people’s hearts.
Some had turned into lunatics like Aunt Zhao, some were meekly trying to survive, and some, like himself, had come to live fully and openly.
But such tyrannical behavior was rare.
Who exactly is this Brother Li?
Should I get rid of him?
Meng Xu pondered silently.
As for the ordinary people before him? Most were probably too scared to speak up, only a few were likely a bootlicker. He might just break their arms.
After all, Meng Xu considered himself merciful, a chairman with good morals who wouldn’t do anything too cruel.
After all, he hadn’t killed a person yet!
With that thought, Meng Xu stood up, causing the fitness instructor to instinctively take a step back, unable to meet Meng Xu’s sharp gaze.
Without further ado, Meng Xu picked up his baseball bat and enthusiastically asked, “And where is this Brother Li? Where can I find him?”
Gritting his teeth, Kong Weizhen summoned his courage and shouted, “He’s in the changing room up ahead, with two girls…”
“Got it.”
Meng Xu nodded, glancing towards the changing room, yawning as he walked over, then suddenly turned back to the fitness instructor.
The fitness instructor, though outwardly defiant, was panicking inside, straightening his posture and pretending not to be afraid.
“Wh-what are you doing?”
“Almost forgot to hit you.”
Meng Xu mumbled to himself. The fitness instructor was stunned upon hearing Meng Xu’s words. The next second, he felt a tremendous force hit him, the impact spreading across his face. At that moment, he seemed to lose all sense of the world, feeling dizzy and disoriented.
Teeth flew out, blood spurted from his mouth.
Falling to the ground, his ears rang.
With one slap, Meng Xu knocked him down without hesitation and headed straight for the changing room. After taking just a few steps, he heard faint noises from inside.
The sounds were not good.
The kind of sounds children shouldn’t hear.
Oh, this ‘Brother Li’ is quite the player, huh?
Thinking this, Meng Xu was ready to kick the door open and barge in to bust up the scene.
But then he remembered he was a polite and good chairman, and he shouldn’t act that way.
So, Meng Xu knocked on the door.
“Knock, knock, knock.”
The knocking was clear, and Meng Xu politely said, “Brother Li, are you in? I’m the new guy, Xiao Meng. Can we have a chat?”
“Could you open the door, Brother Li? We’re civilized people, can’t just talk through the door.”
“Li Xiang, Li Xiang, open the door! If you have the guts to hang two people, you should have the guts to open the door!”
“Nanjiang Heqing, Nanjiang Heqing, the department store is closing down, and the boss Li Xiang is not human…”
“…”
Meng Xu repeated his polite knocking, his voice not too loud, adhering to decorum.
But his behavior left the other survivors dumbfounded.
What?
This?
What’s going on?
Is he not afraid of death?
The survivors shivered with fear. Some were in a full-blown panic, dreading that Li Xiang’s rage would be directed at them.
Shortly, Meng Xu received a response from inside the room.
“Get the hell out! When I come out, I’ll kill you!”
Hearing this, Meng Xu raised an eyebrow.
“You’re testing my patience!”
Who do you think you are to speak to me like that? How many mothers do you have?!
Without hesitation, Meng Xu kicked the door.
With a loud ‘crack,’ the door split in two. Meng Xu, baseball bat in hand, barged in without missing a beat!
“Crouch down, hands on your head, I’m here to bust this place!”
Meng Xu shouted as he stormed in. But as he entered, he was met with a bizarre sight: a young man with green hair, half-naked and tied up with ribbons, lay on the floor, while a tall girl stepped on his face with her bare foot.
Another girl, covered in bruises and wearing skimpy clothing, sprawled across the green-haired guy’s chest, holding… a candle?
Meng Xu: ?
Seeing this scene, Meng Xu was momentarily speechless.
Quickly regaining his composure, he switched from his aggressive stance to a more cautious one.
The Reading the Room skill gave him a hint.
