My SSS-Rank Kingdom-Building System

Chapter 12: Chapter 12

As Leon walked through the bustling market, the system suddenly pinged in his mind, catching his attention. His expression darkened slightly as a new notification appeared in his vision.

[Mission Alert: Uncover the Secrets of the Market]

[Objective: Investigate and uncover the hidden secrets behind the market's strange happenings. Reward: 200 RP, Shop Unlock – Mystery Item.]

Leon paused, narrowing his eyes at the notification. "Secrets behind the market? What kind of shady stuff is going on here?"

Elys looked up, noticing his pause. "What is it?" she asked quietly, sensing the change in his mood.

Leon gave her a nonchalant shrug, masking the seriousness of his thoughts. "Nothing. Let's keep moving."

Elys frowned but said nothing, her silver eyes scanning the market's lively scene. She could feel the tension in the air, though it wasn't clear whether it was from Leon's mission or the market's chaotic energy.

"Stay close," Leon said, his voice lowering to a whisper. "Let's see if we can sniff out something interesting."

They continued through the market, passing rows of merchants hawking their wares, the smells of fresh bread and fish filling the air. The morning sun filtered through the canopies, casting dappled light over the busy square. But for some reason, Leon couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.

The market buzzed around Leon, a mix of haggling voices, clattering carts, and the mouthwatering scent of grilled meat wafting through the air. The chaos of it all should've been enough to drown out the nagging feeling in the pit of his stomach, but it wasn't.

As he moved through the crowd, a sudden impact—a soft thud—hit his shoulder. He barely caught himself before stumbling.

Looking up, he froze.

A woman stood before him, her face concealed by the deep shadow of her hood. The robe she wore hung loose, dark fabric shifting with the movement of the crowd.

Leon took a half step back, eyes narrowing. There was no acknowledgment in her movements, no attempt to apologize. She simply stared at him, the silence between them stretching on.

"Apologies, I wasn't paying attention," she said, her voice soft, but there was no sincerity behind it.

Before Leon could say anything, she turned and moved smoothly through the crowd, like she belonged there, unnoticed. Her pace was steady, too steady for someone navigating a crowded market.

Leon watched her for a moment, but shrugged it off. People bumped into each other all the time in places like this. He wasn't going to waste time on it.

He shifted his attention back to the market, his fingers instinctively brushing the strap of his rifle. "Come on," he muttered to Elys, "let's keep moving."

After a long day navigating the market, Leon and Elys finally made their way back to their room in the inn. The door creaked open, and the soft, musty smell of the old building greeted them. Leon tossed his pack onto the bed, his muscles sore from the day's exertions.

Elys stepped in behind him, her hood drawn low over her face. She had been silent for most of the walk, her steps measured and steady. Leon had noticed her quietness but didn't press her. He wasn't the type to push too hard.

Without thinking, Leon removed his rifle and set it down by the door. His eyes scanned the room for a moment before he turned to Elys. He still couldn't fully understand the situation they were in, but one thing was clear: she wasn't like the others he'd met before.

"How are you holding up?" he asked, his voice a bit softer than usual.

Elys gave a slight nod, her silver eyes flicking toward him. "I'm fine," she said, though there was an unfamiliar tension in her shoulders. It wasn't just the long walk—it was the strange feeling of being here, of being with him, not as a slave, but... something else.

Leon ran a hand through his hair, walking over to the bed and sitting down. "Look, I don't really know how this whole 'you being here' thing works. I didn't bring you along to make you work like a servant or anything. You're not a slave, got it?"

He glanced up at her, and for a brief moment, the playful smirk faded into something a little more serious. "I'm just trying to figure out what this is. I've never had to... well, treat anyone like this before."

Elys didn't respond immediately, still processing his words. She wasn't used to being treated this way. Most people only saw her as something to use, a tool to be sold or discarded. Leon, however, didn't treat her like that. It left her feeling strangely out of place—uncomfortable, even.

Leon seemed to sense the shift in the air and stood, walking toward her with a smirk on his face as if trying to lighten the mood. He stopped just a foot away, close enough for her to feel the warmth of his presence. Without warning, he placed his hands on her waist, pulling her closer. Their bodies brushed against each other, and for a moment, everything around them seemed to blur.

Elys froze, her breath catching. His touch was unexpected—intimate even—and it sent a strange warmth through her. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she could feel her face heating up.

"Come on," Leon said, his voice low, yet teasing. "I'm not gonna bite. Just... relax."

Elys's cheeks turned slightly pink, but she stayed still, unsure of how to react. His words were casual, but the way his body was so close to hers was anything but. She wasn't used to this kind of proximity, and for a moment, the world seemed to narrow down to just the two of them.

Leon's grip loosened slightly, but he didn't pull away. His eyes met hers, searching for some sort of reaction. "I'm not trying to make things weird, okay? Just... I don't want you thinking that you're just some... thing. I'm not the kind of guy who treats people like that."

Elys's thoughts were a mess, but something in his tone made her feel a little more at ease. She could see the sincerity in his eyes, even if she didn't fully understand it. The tension in her shoulders loosened just a fraction, but there was still a part of her that felt unsure.

"Okay?" Leon's voice softened as if he was giving her the space to decide what to do next.

After a moment of hesitation, Elys slowly closed the distance between them, her body relaxing into his, almost instinctively. She buried her face in his chest, her arms wrapping around him hesitantly at first, then more firmly as she let herself rest in his warmth.

Leon didn't say anything, but his arms went around her in return, holding her lightly. He could feel her tension slowly melting away as she allowed herself to lean into him, and for a brief moment, everything felt... right.
