Chapter 3: Chapter 3

As they approached the door of Emily's apartment building, she turned to Leon with a soft smile. "Thanks again, Leon. I really don't know what I'd have done without you tonight."

Leon nodded, giving her a reassuring look. "No problem. Just glad I could help."

They reached the door to her apartment, and she pulled out her keys to unlock it. The moment the door creaked open, a small voice came from inside.

"Emily! Where have you been? I was starting to worry!"

Emily stepped inside, followed by Leon. Her younger brother, a 10-year-old with messy brown hair and a worried expression, stood at the hallway entrance, his eyes wide as he looked at her.

"Hey, Jake," Emily said, kneeling down to give him a quick hug. "Sorry I'm late. I ran into a friend and got caught up talking."

Jake's eyes flickered over to Leon, his brow furrowing slightly. "Who's that?"

Leon gave a small, friendly wave. "Hey, I'm Leon. Nice to meet you."

Emily quickly stepped in to smooth things over, standing up and brushing off the question. "He's an old friend from college. We were talking for a while, and I lost track of time. I'll make us some dinner in a minute, okay?"

Jake, still a little uneasy, nodded but didn't look completely convinced. "Okay, but you're home now. And I don't want anything happening to you."

Emily smiled, ruffling his hair. "I'm fine, don't worry. It was just a little walk, nothing serious."

Leon could see the protective nature of the little brother. It was clear how much he cared about her, even if he was a bit overprotective. He respected that.

"Come inside," Emily said, ushering him into the apartment. "Make yourself comfortable. I'll just get us settled."

As they entered, the warm glow of the apartment was a stark contrast to the cold streets outside. Emily quickly set about preparing something simple to eat, and Leon found a place to sit, feeling the tension from the night finally beginning to fade.

Jake glanced at him again, more curious than anything. "So… you guys were talking for a long time, huh?"

Emily chuckled nervously, shooting a quick glance at Leon. "Yeah, just catching up. It's been a while, you know? Anyway, we can talk about it later. Go get ready for bed."

Jake, still a little suspicious, nodded and shuffled off to his room, leaving Emily and Leon alone in the quiet of the apartment.

Emily turned to Leon, a soft smile on her face. "Thanks again for helping me tonight. I don't know how to repay you."

Leon smiled back, feeling a little more at ease. "It's no big deal. I'm just glad you're safe."

As Emily prepared dinner, Leon looked around the small, cozy apartment. It wasn't much, but it felt warm, and the kind of place where he could relax for the first time that night.

As Emily worked in the kitchen, Leon leaned back in his seat, scanning the room with a casual, observant gaze. The apartment was modest but well-kept, a reflection of Emily's careful nature. His eyes flickered to her as she moved, her figure outlined by the warm glow of the light above. He noted her steady composure—a quiet resilience in the way she handled everything. It wasn't something he admired lightly.

Still, he didn't linger. Leon had always been pragmatic, grounded. If he noticed something, it wasn't to daydream but to analyze. People's behavior, their reactions—those were tools he used to measure his surroundings, to prepare for the unexpected. Tonight was no different.

"Everything okay?" Emily asked, glancing over her shoulder.

"Yeah," Leon replied smoothly. His tone was even, his expression unreadable. "Just thinking."

"About earlier?" she pressed, her voice tinged with concern.

He offered a faint smirk, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees. "Not exactly. I'll worry about that if it comes back to bite us."

Emily paused for a moment before nodding, as if reassured by his calm demeanor. "Well, dinner's almost ready. I hope you don't mind something simple."

"Anything's fine," he said. "Thanks for going through the trouble."

Her smile was small, almost shy, but she didn't reply. Instead, she focused on finishing the meal, while Leon turned his attention back to the room. Jake's earlier hostility had amused him more than anything else. Protective or not, the kid had guts—a good trait in the right situation.

By the time dinner was served, the air had settled into a quiet rhythm. They ate without much talk, the tension of the day fading into a shared, unspoken understanding. Jake had long since disappeared into his room, and Emily seemed content to let the silence linger.

When the meal was done, Leon stood, gathering the plates without waiting for her to protest. She gave him a surprised look, but he shrugged it off. "You cooked. Least I can do is help clean up."

"Fair enough," she said, a hint of a smile breaking through.

Once the dishes were done, Emily set out a blanket and pillow for him on the couch. "You can crash here for the night. It's not much, but..."

"It'll do," Leon interrupted, his tone firm but not unkind. He wasn't used to relying on others, but practicality won out over pride. The streets weren't an option tonight, and he needed rest.

Emily hesitated, as if she wanted to say more, but eventually nodded. "Goodnight, then. And... thanks again."

Leon nodded once, watching as she retreated to her room. The apartment grew quiet, the faint hum of the city outside the only sound left. He sat back on the couch, exhaling slowly as the weight of the day pressed down on him.

Finally.

The moment he closed his eyes, a sharp, overwhelming sensation tore through his mind. His body stiffened, muscles locking up as his pulse thundered in his ears. The room around him blurred, fading into a void of black and white.

Leon blinked, his body frozen as a holographic screen floated before him, shimmering with a digital glow. Lines of text scrolled past in perfect synchronization, sleek and futuristic. He stared, incredulous, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

"What in the Elon Musk Neuralink sci-fi bulls**t is this?" he muttered, running a hand through his hair. He wasn't sure if he was dreaming or losing his mind, but the damn thing wasn't going away.
