My Villainous husband loves me

Chapter 5: In his presence

Abigail's POV

I followed prince Markle into the king's court. I could hear the king and the lord commander converse as we walked inside.

Briefly, I wondered what the king was like, I reckoned few only knew the man not his reputation. King Aldous wasn't a man or king to be trifled with. He was ruthless in his dealings and he made it a choice to forgive as little as possible.

Father once told me that when King Aldous was still a prince, he wanted a rare horse owned by king Javis of Oakland and to get it he waged war on the little kingdom and he slaughtered hundreds and conquered the land.

Oakland is now one of the seven kingdoms he conquered and now reigns over. I have no doubt the second prince, Prince Abbott Raven, took after him in his ruthlessness.

The king's court was just as I imagined. The cold granite walls…the lack of welcoming colors…the round table with a miniature of the southern hemisphere and the tall flag with the sigil of the house Raven…a phoenix bird. I thought it would be a raven bird but I guess not.

The king sat on his throne while the lord commander stood by the round table, his gaze glued to the king in this cold unfeeling way.

"….wanted to see you, I would have sent for you, rat"

It was the king's voice and I must have heard him wrong because who calls their favorite kin, rat.

"Your debt of gratitude and your big heart always brings tears to my eyes, your majesty but I am not here for the hugs and the praises, father. I have delivered on my end…the midland is yours and one day it will be Markle's to lose, it is time for you to make due on your end. I expect two more battalions to join the crescent by day's end"

I watched as Prince Markle stopped in his tracks. His eyes were like two dark points, I could feel the anger evaporating from his pores.

"You are not going to give a madman more armies to control, Grandpa! It is ridiculous!" Prince Markle yelled out loud.

I have never been so uncomfortable in my life. I tried to make myself as small as possible but it was practically impossible, all I succeeded in doing was raise the level of anxiety and panic in me.

I tried to slow my pounding heart; this wasn't the kind of family I grew up with.

I expected the lord commander to attack his nephew for calling him a madman but all he did was stare…. And then he stared at me and I felt my pounding heart jump into my stomach.

I couldn't hold his gaze and it burned like hot coal and without thinking I grabbed Prince Markle's hand for protection, he seemed like the only one who wasn't terrified to the bones of the prince of darkness.

I counted to ten in my head and I waited for a few more seconds before I tried to look at him again

*

"What are you doing here? You are not supposed to be here"

he murmured to himself but I heard him and so did the first prince but King Aldous seemed oblivious of his statement.

Great! Now, I have succeeded in annoying a Baron and a psycho murderous ex-husband!

Way to go, Abby!

What is next?

Upset the tyrant King?!

"Don't talk to her. Stay away from her, Abbott. She's under my protection" Markle said and it gladdened my heart.

Once again, Lord Commander did nothing but throw a glance his way, it shut Markle up almost immediately.

"Grandpa, tell Abbott she is…"

"Did you bring a whore to my court, Markle?" the old man king asked from where he sat.

Hmm…I am sorry but does Markle make it a point of bringing whores to the king's court and when did this happe…wait, I am the whore.

The king was referring to me.

"No…I am not…no, I am nothing so vile, your majesty" I blabbered

"Hush" Markle whispered. "we are not permitted to speak to the king unless spoken to"

"I am so…so sorry, your majesty. I didn't…" I started to blabber again to the king when I heard the lord commander speak.

"Be Quiet!" he snapped at me. It was enough to get me to shut up.

"Markle?" King Aldous looked at his grandson.

Markle took a step forward.

"You wouldn't believe it but this is the honorable Abigail Spencer" Markle said with a little smile that made me a little nervous. "She is the daughter of your esteemed friend, Baron Baltimore of house spencer"

The king stood up and he took a step closer to us like he was examining me. His curious eyes made me want to vanish into thin air but it also gave me time to really look at him too.

He was old yet he stood upright and agile. His hair was gray and he was stout unlike the two princes.

He had blue eyes like Markle and a face that was more wrinkled than old man Charlie Stinson the marquess of Eagle bee.

He walked with the agility of a young man, slowing down only when he was standing very close to me.

I lowered my head immediately…mostly out of fear rather than rules.

"Miss Spencer, I have been looking for you"

"You have? Why?" I blurted out before I could stop myself.
