Mystery Chaser: The Assassination

Chapter 21: Chapter 21: The Escape Begins

The room was a claustrophobic nightmare. The air hung thick with the smell of dust and machine oil, the faint hum of the dying lights overhead adding to the oppressive atmosphere. Gabriel's pulse thudded in his ears, drowning out everything but the cold, calculating eyes of Blackwood standing at the door.

For a moment, time seemed to slow. Gabriel's thoughts whirled like a hurricane, crashing against his skull, but he didn't have the luxury of hesitation. He had learned long ago that in moments like this, survival wasn't about thinking—it was about acting.

Claire's breath was shallow, her hand inching toward the weapon hidden at her side. Gabriel could sense the tension radiating from her, but he didn't move to stop her. They were cornered, and if there was one thing he knew, it was that you never let an opportunity to strike slip by. Not with someone like Blackwood.

Lila stood motionless by the console, her face pale but set. Her fingers had stopped moving, and for a split second, Gabriel saw the briefest flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. The betrayal hung between them, unspoken, but clear as day.

"You're right," Blackwood said, his voice smooth, calculating. "I knew this would happen. I always know, Lila. You think you can outsmart me?" His gaze shifted to Gabriel, then to Claire. "But you've underestimated me all along. And now you'll pay the price."

The man didn't move, but every inch of him radiated danger. He was a predator, a man who had shaped his life around controlling every variable in the equation. Gabriel could practically feel the weight of the trap closing in, like the jaws of a steel vise. They had no way out. No escape.

But then, as if by instinct, Gabriel's mind raced into overdrive. He turned to Claire with a single, silent command—a look, a gesture. She nodded almost imperceptibly. Without a sound, she moved, slipping behind the nearest machinery. Her stealth was impressive, but it wasn't enough to distract Blackwood.

"Is this really how it ends, Gabriel?" Blackwood taunted, taking a slow step forward, his hands folded neatly behind his back. "You think you can defeat me? You're just a dog chasing a car. You don't even know what to do if you catch it."

Gabriel's heart pounded, but his mind was a machine now, working, calculating. He could almost hear the words in his head, as if the entire escape plan had been laid out for him. He had one shot. One chance.

With a snap, he lunged forward, grabbing a wrench from the nearby tool table and flinging it toward a series of exposed wires. Sparks flew, and a loud crackling sound echoed through the room, momentarily blinding Blackwood and his guards.

Claire reacted instantly. She darted out from her hiding place, moving like a shadow, and grabbed Blackwood's gun from the belt of the nearest guard. The man barely had time to react before she slammed the barrel of the gun into his chest, knocking him backward. In the chaos, Gabriel reached for Lila, pulling her toward the door.

"We need to move," Gabriel growled, his voice low, his hand gripping Lila's arm tightly. She flinched, but didn't resist. Not this time.

Blackwood roared in fury, his hands reaching for his own gun, but Gabriel was already one step ahead. He kicked over a nearby stack of equipment, creating a barrier between them and the guards. As the gunfire erupted behind them, Gabriel could hear Claire's voice shouting orders. It was chaos, a cacophony of noise and violence that filled the room.

They were running. Gabriel, Claire, and Lila. Through the narrow, twisting corridors of the underground facility. The sounds of pursuit followed them—footsteps pounding on the concrete floors, shouts echoing off the walls. But they had no choice. There was no time to stop. No time to think. Only one objective: escape.

"Keep moving!" Gabriel barked, adrenaline pumping through his veins. His mind was in a frenzy, calculating the next turn, the next corner, the next danger. He glanced over at Claire, whose face was set with grim determination. They were a team now. There was no turning back.

"Where are we going?" Lila gasped, her voice strained from the exertion. She was barely keeping up, but there was something in her eyes now—something different. It was the look of someone who knew the stakes. Someone who understood what was on the line.

"Just keep running," Gabriel shot back, his gaze scanning ahead. They needed an exit, and fast.

They rounded a corner and came to an abrupt halt. The hallway stretched ahead, lined with doors and thick steel walls. In the distance, the sound of footsteps echoed louder. The guards were closing in.

Gabriel's mind raced. There had to be a way out.

"Wait." Claire suddenly held up her hand, her eyes narrowing. "I think I know where we are."

Gabriel turned, his eyes sharp. "Where?"

"There's a maintenance tunnel about fifty meters to the left," she said, pointing. "It should lead us out of the facility. We need to hurry."

Without another word, they sprinted down the hallway, Gabriel leading the charge. His heart was in his throat, each step carrying them closer to the one slim chance they had of escaping. The guards were close now—too close. But the maintenance tunnel was their only hope.

They reached the door, and Claire worked quickly, expertly picking the lock. Her hands were steady, even as the noise from the pursuing guards grew louder. She pushed the door open, and they rushed inside, slamming it shut behind them.

For a moment, there was silence. The hum of distant machinery. The echo of their breaths in the small, cramped space.

"We're not safe yet," Gabriel muttered, eyes scanning the dark tunnel ahead. It was narrow, the walls close, and the air was damp. They had no idea how far this tunnel went, or what lay at the other end.

"We have to keep moving," Claire said, her voice calm but urgent. "They'll be looking for us. We can't stop now."

Gabriel nodded, and they moved forward into the darkness.

But something wasn't right.

They weren't alone.
