Mythos Of Narcissus: Reborn As An NPC In A Horror VRMMO

Chapter 259: Seizing Control

The spire quaked as the transfer process began, its chaotic energy manifesting in a whirlwind of shifting floors and emerging defenses.

The once-dormant constructs that was hiding in plain sight began roaring to life, their glowing forms pouring from hidden alcoves in the walls and descending from the fractured ceiling like a metallic storm.

Each one moved with an eerie gait, like an apocalyptic zombie struggling to hold their hunger for the feast that was laid in front of them.

Their jagged limbs and pulsating cores reflect the hostile intent of the Vault itself.

Kuzunoha, as ever composed despite the growing chaos, stood by the stabilizing device where Lupina's disembodied head was secured.

Her fingers danced over a projection of arcane glyphic controls, the symbols reacting to her touch with fluid motion. The stabilizing device emitted a low hum, its energy resonating in a rhythm that felt uncomfortably alive.

Even though there was no sense of urgency in her face, she seemed to be hastening the transferring the process while also ensuring that the sudden hostels won't ever manage to interfere this process.

But the entire spire itself seemed to fight back against her rebellion, its shifting architecture lashing out in defiance. The walls pulsed with alien light, and sections of the floor buckled as if resisting the presence of the expedition team. Yet Kuzunoha's smirk remained intact, her crimson eyes glinting as if daring the Vault to do its worst.

Around her, the whole expedition team mobilized.

Heavenly Maids and bastioneers formed defensive perimeters, their weapons aimed at the onslaught of constructs. Assault drones zipped through the air, weaving between the incoming enemies and clashing their might of steel The Warpiece Drone loomed above them all, its cannons unleashing devastating salvos that shattered the approaching constructs into shards of glowing gold.

Viviane's magic flared in waves of shimmering light, her fae power enveloping the team in protective barriers and enhancing their movements.

Her voice, calm but firm, rang out over the telepathic channel. "Kuzunoha, how long is this transfer going to take?"

Kuzunoha didn't look up from the stabilizing device. Her tone was equal parts dismissive and smug. "Do you think that, transferring someone's soul into the most intricate and temperamental piece of Theotech ever conceived is something that happens in a blink? It will take as long as it takes. Be patient."

Viviane exhaled sharply but didn't press further. Instead, she turned her focus back to the constructs, her hands weaving intricate gestures that sent tendrils of fae magic lashing out at the enemies, binding them in place long enough for the bastioneers to finish them off.

She could try using more of her power, but there was no open source of water around. As a water nymph, she was heavily limited in her offensive and defensive method when it comes to fight outside of large bodies of water.

Of course, she could just open a reality rift, but it seemed like the Theotech psychic jammer was too strong for her to do anything of such scale.

Meanwhile, Verina stood at the front line, her crystalline musket firing precise, controlled heat-condensed shots that disintegrated constructs with each impact. Her expression remained as flat as ever, though her actions carried an unmistakable intensity. "You better not drag this out, Kuzunoha," she said through the comms, her tone deadpan but laced with sharp intent. "I'm not in the mood to babysit your overcomplicated science project for hours."

Kuzunoha chuckled softly. "Don't worry, Verina. I'm sure you'll find some way to entertain yourself. Perhaps count how many constructs you can vaporize before you start sweating."

Verina's response was a single, deliberate shot that obliterated three constructs in one go. "Eighty-seven," she said flatly, reloading her musket with a flick of her wrist. "Another ten thousand if you are not in the vicinity."

"You make it sound like I'm the actual psychic jammer here."

"Wait, you aren't?"

Viviane could only sigh at the sight of these two bickering at each other like children. "Is there anything that could make the two of you be at peace with one another?" She said, while casually protecting the entire expedition team member with her adaptive barriers.

"I want to see this exhaust-horned woman cry."

"I want to see this haughty fox cry."

"You two are insufferable…"

I guess there was a reason why Lupina was much more comfortable on Charis' hands than on her own long time friend.

As the battle raged as expected, my actual focus was somewhere else.

The chaos of the spire's defenses was an obstacle, yes, but also an opportunity.

With the Theotech Vessel no longer controlling the spire, the nexus of its psychic network was exposed, vulnerable to external influence.

If I could seize control of that nexus, the entire spire would become ours to command.

"Charis, what is the most efficient body part to attack, in order to kill a serpent the size of a mountain, and the length of an entire continent?"

"The head?"

"The same goes the same way with this Theotech spire."

Extending my perceptive reach, I pinpointed the core of the nexus, a pulsating mass of psychic energy buried deep within the spire's labyrinthine structure, the very same location where I first met and clashed with the Theotech Vessel of this vault.

Using my spiritual projection as a conduit, I transported myself directly into the nexus, my form materializing in the heart of the chaotic psychic realm.

Now, without the pilot, the nexus was a chaotic swirling void of golden and azure energy, its currents spiraling around a central core that pulsed with an almost organic, yet dying rhythm.

Tendrils of psychic interference lashed out in all directions, seeking to repel intruders and maintain the spire's chaotic order as it waits for its true driver to take the seat once again.

I moved forward, weaving through the tendrils and dodging their lashing strikes.

As I drew closer, the tendrils became more aggressive, their movements sharper and more deliberate, but I pressed on, before plunging my hand into the core with a decisive motion.

The instant my projection made contact, the nexus reacted violently.

A surge of energy exploded outward, threatening to destabilize my form, but I anchored myself with sheer force of will, channeling my divine dexterity to assimilate control over the core.

Threads of golden light extended from my hand, intertwining with the core's structure and embedding my essence within its framework.

"This should do it."

But out of nowhere, I heard a gentle voice.

"Everreal."

The word echoed through the psychic realm, reverberating with a resonance that felt both familiar and utterly alien.

Before I could react, my consciousness was pulled away from the nexus, transported to a new realm that defied all logic.

"... Where is this?"

I found myself standing in an open meadow, the ground beneath me covered in flowers made of crystalline light.

The air shimmered with an otherworldly glow, and the sky above was a swirling canvas of color and motion, as if the universe itself were alive.

And in the distance stood a figure.

They were humanoid in shape but utterly faceless, their form both present and absent, as if they existed only as a concept given shape.

Their presence was overwhelmingly divine, more than anything that should exist in this world. Its weight pressed against my very being, yet it carried no malice—only an undeniable sense of authority.

The figure regarded me with an expression I couldn't see but somehow felt. "You've grown, Everreal."

I frowned, taking a cautious step forward. "Who are you? And what is this place?"

The figure didn't answer directly. "The truth remains beyond what can exist in this world. But you… you are closer than most."

I narrowed my eyes. "What is Everreal? Why do you keep calling me that?"

There was a pause, the figure's gaze shifting toward the meadow around us. When they spoke again, their voice was softer, almost wistful. "Everreal is one of the finest creations we have ever conceived."

Their finest creation?

Was there a semblance of connection that Daffodil, or in this case, Narcissus have with the Theotech?

I opened my mouth to question further but stopped myself.

It was clear that this entity would only answer in riddles, their words more cryptic than illuminating. Instead, I gave it a chance to express itself.

"Is there a reason you brought me here? Something you want to tell me?"

The figure turned their faceless gaze back to me. "Carcosa is merely an egg. Everything you have ever perceived is but the outer shell." Geometric structure began to sprout from its vessel, like a thorny flower that wanted to bloom upward. "If you are ever lost, seek the center of this world…

"And uncover the moment where everything must turn to dust."

Before I could press for clarification, the figure vanished, and the meadow dissolved around me.

My consciousness also snapped back to the nexus, and I found my hand still embedded in its core.

"... And here I thought that I already have a good picture of this world."

The energy around me had stilled, and I realized with a start that I now held control over the spire.

It didn't feel like a victory at all. More like a gift granted by a force far beyond my understanding.

Regardless, I turned my focus to the task at hand, commanding the spire's constructs to retreat and restoring order to its chaotic floors.

The spire's labyrinthine structure began to shift, its once-random pathways rearranging into a more navigable configuration.

Satisfied, I retracted my projection and rejoined the telepathic channel.

"The spire is under our control."
