Chapter 33: Chapter 33
The classroom was abuzz as students scanned their surroundings, but there was no sign of Naruto.
"Hmph, don't tell me he's too scared to show up?"
"Looks like it. Definitely chickened out."
At that moment, a chubby boy walked into the classroom, his face full of irritation. Hearing the others angrily searching for Naruto, he immediately shouted, "Naruto? He's just outside, setting up a shogi stand on his way here! I swear, that guy's lost his mind."
Still smarting from being outdone by Naruto earlier, the boy exaggerated further, accusing Naruto of openly looking down on his classmates.
Hearing this, Sasuke glanced up at the ranting boy. In the past, she might have believed Naruto to be this arrogant. But after getting to know him better, she realized the boy was just badmouthing Naruto out of spite.
"What? He dares to set up a public shogi stand and charge for matches?"
Yamanaka Ino, who had been looking for an excuse to confront Naruto, clenched her fists and stood up. "And he had the nerve to claim we're all garbage when it comes to shogi?"
"Right! Shikamaru's the best in class at shogi, and even I—who barely play—could crush Naruto!" Sakura added, standing up in anger.
"Shikamaru, I'll pay you to teach Naruto a lesson on behalf of our class!" Ino slammed a stack of hundred-ryo bills onto the desk.
All eyes turned to Shikamaru, who was dozing off as usual.
These past few days, his parents had been in a cold war, and he'd spent three sleepless nights playing chess with his dad. When he heard Ino's proposal, he rolled his eyes in frustration.
"Troublesome. Not interested. Go ask someone else."
"Shikamaru, are you really going to turn me down?" Ino fumed, but she was used to his attitude and had no way to force him.
"Hmph, we don't need Shikamaru. Even we can beat Naruto with our skills."
Indeed, families like the Yamanakas, Naras, Inuzukas, and Hyugas, renowned in Konoha, trained their younger generation in all areas—moral, intellectual, physical, artistic, and labor education. Most of them knew some shogi, though Shikamaru was still considered the best.
Soon, Ino, Sakura, and about seven or eight other students formed a "task force" and marched out of the classroom with great fanfare.
Sasuke watched them leave, frowning. "Naruto, what are you up to now? Since when do you even know how to play shogi?"
She had initially considered following them to watch the drama unfold, but after being bested by Naruto multiple times recently, she decided it was time to let him taste defeat instead.
Most of the boys had left the classroom, leaving only a few students like Hinata, Choji, Kiba, Shino, and a small group of girls behind.
Five minutes passed, but none of the challengers returned.
This piqued the curiosity of Kiba and the others, who hadn't paid much attention earlier.
"Hinata, why don't you take a look and see what's going on out there?" Kiba suggested with a grin. "It's just reconnaissance, not snooping on a classmate's secrets, okay?"
Shino nodded in agreement. "Right. Gathering intel is a natural advantage of the Byakugan. Think of it as practice."
Hinata hesitated, worried about Naruto's safety. But after some internal debate, she nodded.
"Fine... consider this training."
"Byakugan!"
With a soft exclamation, the veins around her eyes bulged as her Byakugan activated. Her pale, pupil-less eyes now bore a sharp focus that seemed to pierce through everything.
Hinata's gaze cut through the walls, landing on the scene not far outside the classroom. What she saw left her stunned.
Naruto, looking exuberant, was dominating the shogi board, while the team led by Ino and Sakura appeared visibly distressed.
"Hinata, what do you see?"
"Is Naruto getting destroyed?"
While the others chattered, only Shikamaru and Sasuke remained silent, their eyes fixed on Hinata.
Hinata deactivated her Byakugan and carefully chose her words. "Naruto-kun's stand has a large pile of ryo notes. Judging by their expressions and momentum... it seems Ino-senpai and her group are the ones losing terribly."
Hinata's calm explanation shocked everyone, even Kiba, Shino, and Sasuke.
"Impossible! Ino may not be great at shogi, but she's not a novice either," Shikamaru muttered, visibly surprised.
"Hmph," Sasuke scoffed softly. She was mildly surprised by Naruto's breadth of skills, especially since her own understanding of shogi was minimal.

Meanwhile, at the shogi stand:
[Ding! You've received 600 Shock Points from the girls in your class!]
At that moment, Naruto's lips curled into a victorious smile as he placed a chess piece on the board with a decisive clack.
The move pierced through the defenses like a spear to the heart, securing yet another victory against Ino's group.
Staring at the lost game, Ino's face turned as dark as the bottom of a pot, and the crowd of advisors surrounding her fell silent.
This was already the fifth game. Another crushing defeat.
Naruto's exceptional chess skills left them feeling as if victory was an unattainable illusion whenever they faced him.
"Another loss… The fifth game, and we've lost again?"
Haruno Sakura stared blankly at the board, unable to believe that such masterful chess moves could come from a so-called "dead last" of their class.
"Hahaha… I'll gladly accept these 600 ryō!"
Naruto reached out, grabbed the six large bills stacked beside the chessboard, and placed them neatly by his side, his sunny smile brimming with satisfaction.
The first game's bet had been 200 ryō. The second, 400. By the third, the stakes had risen to 500. After his victory in the third game, both Ino and Sakura's allowance money had been completely lost to Naruto.
Naruto had initially thought they would give up after that. Who would've guessed that, unwilling to let him continue flaunting his arrogance, they pooled their remaining allowances together to challenge him again?
This turn of events amused Naruto to no end. Initially, he had felt a twinge of regret that Shikamaru wasn't around—after all, these girls' allowances couldn't possibly match up to his.
By the fourth game, Naruto found himself essentially playing against a collective of seven or eight people.
While it's said that a true gentleman doesn't comment while observing a chess game, these players were paying their bets—so who could blame them for offering advice during the matches?
The stakes for the fourth game rose to 600 ryō. Concerned that he might crush their spirits too thoroughly, Naruto deliberately left openings in his gameplay. Even so, facing multiple opponents at once was a perilous endeavor. At one point, he was dangerously close to losing.
This ploy had the desired effect: it reignited hope in Ino and her group, making them believe they had a real chance of defeating him.
And so…
The group pooled their money once more for a fifth game. The result? Another near-victory that fell just short.
"Naruto, I refuse to accept this! One more game!" Ino roared, unable to stomach the smug grin plastered across Naruto's face.
"Oh? Do you even have any ryō left?"
Naruto, sensing that the prep bell was about to ring, slapped all the money he'd won so far onto the board.
"For the final game, 1,900 ryō. Can you match the stakes?"
