Chapter 12: The First Mission
The Takime outpost had transformed over the past few months. It was no longer the quiet, hidden refuge it once was—it had grown into a bustling settlement filled with laughter, training, and life. The partial relocation of the Terumi clan had brought new energy to the valley. The construction teams worked tirelessly, and families settled in with ease. Children ran around, competing in games and sparring sessions, pushing each other to improve. The classrooms were more crowded, and every lesson was met with more eager minds.
This trial phase, suggested by Meruem, was proving to be a success. The minor complaints—over room sizes or food preferences—were nothing out of the ordinary, and both clans adapted well to sharing the outpost. The cooperation between the two clans was strengthening faster than anyone had anticipated.
For the clan heads and higher-ups, things were more hectic than ever. Meetings, planning sessions, and constant problem-solving filled their days. Maki and Mei bore the brunt of the workload. Maki, in particular, was constantly frustrated, often muttering complaints to anyone who'd listen.
"I don't even have time to train myself, let alone Ru!" she would grumble, rubbing her temples.
But Kaoru? He wasn't missing her guidance all that much.
Since getting permission to leave the outpost and train near the waterfall, Kaoru had been spending nearly all his time there. The serene environment and rushing water provided the perfect backdrop for him to focus on honing his abilities. It was the first time he could truly explore his Kekkei Genkai without restraint. He discovered a crucial breakthrough: his Kekkei Genkai could be partially activated.
By limiting his visual abilities he drastically reduced his chakra consumption. This allowed him to practice water manipulation more freely.
"Why burn through all my chakra when I can do it this way?" he mused, swirling a droplet of water in his palm.
Kaoru's focus was now on refining his control and efficiency. He practiced creating intricate shapes from water, manipulating its flow with precision, and even hardening it to mimic small projectiles. Though his chakra reserves were still limited, he felt like he was making real progress.
Kaoru had mastered Body Flicker to the point that it was second nature. He could use it without thinking, almost like a reflex. His Water Prison technique had also taken a big leap forward. Thanks to his recent discovery about water density, it was now a much tougher trap to escape.
Ever since he woke up in this world with his Naruto memories, Kaoru had been thinking about what made his Kekkei Genkai different from regular water-style ninjutsu. After a lot of trial and error, he figured it out: his Kekkei Genkai let him control water particles in the air and on surfaces without much chakra. But when it came to water inside living things—even plants—it became way harder to manipulate. Still, being able to control free water particles with minimal effort was already a huge advantage.
One day, while testing his theory, Kaoru tried increasing the density of the water in his Water Prison. The result blew his mind. The water shrank, but it hardened to the point that it became nearly indestructible—almost like metal. He tested it by slashing a kunai at the dense water barrier. The blade didn't even leave a scratch.
Kaoru stood there, grinning like a fool.
"This… is huge," he muttered to himself, spinning a droplet of water between his fingers. He had just discovered something that no ordinary water user could do. Hardened water that was practically unbreakable? That could be his trump card.
However, changing the water's density wasn't without its drawbacks. Every time Kaoru tried to alter a large amount of water, a splitting headache followed. The more he pushed, the worse it got. Still, he could manage small objects with ease—small barriers, dense weapons, or even hardened water shuriken. He hoped that as his chakra control and mastery of Suijingan (The name of Takime Clan's Kekkei Genkai - Water God Eyes) improved, the pain would ease up with time.
"Well, there goes my dream of making it rain steel," he chuckled to himself. But despite the strain, he wasn't discouraged in the slightest. Kaoru had made significant progress. His chakra core kept growing steadily, and he knew it was only a matter of time before he had enough reserves to unleash the full potential of his Kekkei Genkai.
Still, there was something bothering him.
"It's been, what, six, almost seven months since I asked Maki to get me the Shadow Clone Jutsu?" he muttered, a deep frown settling on his face. "I'm starting to think that's never gonna happen."
Shadow Clones weren't just cool—they were broken. Kaoru wanted them badly for training purposes. With clones, he could study all the scrolls in the library at once, practice jutsu faster, and basically cut his training time significantly. But without access to the technique, he was stuck doing everything the old-fashioned way.
"I need to speed things up somehow," he muttered, thinking aloud. "My biggest problem right now is still my body. Low chakra reserves, zero real combat experience… No point in learning a bunch of new jutsus, I'd rather first master those I already know. I want to go outside on missions but there is no way Maki and grandma will let me…"
Kaoru's mind wandered to Mei. His eyes lit up with an idea.
"Maybe I can convince Mei to take me along next time she goes to the Terumi Clan to bring more people. She's always telling me I'm too mature for my age. Might as well use that to my advantage."
Smirking at his clever plan, Kaoru glanced at the waterfall in front of him. He stepped into the lake and made his way to stand under the cascading water. The rushing torrent hit his shoulders like a heavy weight, but he remained still, standing firmly on the water's surface.
Meditating while standing on water had been a challenge at first. Meditating while moving on water was still beyond his ability, but standing still? That he could do. His control had improved, and so had his endurance.
"Alright, let's keep going."
Kaoru closed his eyes, focusing on his breathing and chakra flow. The sound of the waterfall drowned out his thoughts, allowing him to lose himself in training once again.

Kaoru returned early that day, determined to talk to Mei. He knew she was leaving the next morning, and if he wanted to get permission to join her, this was his only chance. Unfortunately, Maki was also there, chatting with Mei. Now, he had to convince both of them.
With a grin plastered on his face, Kaoru approached the two girls. But their expressions said it all: What do you want now? It was no secret that Kaoru only showed up when he needed something. His reputation for being an adorable little schemer was well-earned.
"Hello, Mei. Hi, Maki," he greeted with a wide smile before throwing his arms around Maki in a hug. He knew she couldn't resist that. Maki's face softened immediately, and despite knowing it was a tactical move, she hugged him back with a bright smile. Kaoru was her weakness, and everyone knew it.
Before she could say anything, Kaoru launched his pitch.
"Maki, I was thinking… Maybe I could go with Mei to the Terumi Clan this time? You know, to keep her company?" he asked sweetly, his arms still wrapped around her.
Mei couldn't hold it in. She burst out laughing, watching how hard Kaoru was trying to win Maki over. His effort was both amusing and impressive.
"Ru, will you ever come to me for a hug when you don't want something?" Maki asked, pouting dramatically.
Kaoru froze, caught off guard by the question. For some reason, her words hit him harder than he expected. His chest tightened with guilt, and before he could stop himself, he blurted out, "I'm sorry, Maki. I promise I will."
To emphasize his point, he squeezed her tighter, holding on longer than usual. Maki blinked in surprise, feeling a twinge of emotion at her little brother's unexpected sincerity.
"Aww, you two are so cute together," teased Mei, still chuckling.
Kaoru finally let go of Maki, his face a little red from embarrassment. Mei grinned at Maki mischievously. "I don't mind taking him with me. If Lady Suiren and You are okay with it, he can come along. Plus…" Her grin widened as she leaned closer to Kaoru. "There are a few girls back at the Terumi Clan who've heard stories about your fight with me. They'd love to meet you."
Kaoru groaned, rolling his eyes. "I'm eight. I'm not interested in girls."
Mei laughed even harder, clearly enjoying herself. Maki, however, gave Kaoru a thoughtful look before speaking with a strange smile on her face.
"I'll let you go… on one condition."
Kaoru perked up instantly. "Anything!"
"You have to follow every order Mei gives you. No sneaking off. No wandering around on your own. You are not allowed to leave her side. Understand?"
Kaoru nodded eagerly. "I won't! I promise. You know I'd never lie to you."
Maki's smile softened, but her eyes lingered on him with an unusual seriousness. "I know, Ru."
For a moment, Kaoru felt a heaviness in his chest again, but this time it wasn't guilt. It was something else—something he couldn't quite explain. He had gotten what he wanted, but deep down, a part of him just wanted to see Maki smile.
"Alright," said Maki, giving him a playful flick on the forehead. "Go get ready. You're leaving in the morning."
Kaoru beamed, the excitement returning to his face. "Thank you, Maki! You're the best!"
"Yeah, yeah," Maki teased, watching him dash off. "Don't forget to pack your manners."
Mei, still smirking, shook her head. "That boy… I swear, he's going to be a handful one day."
Maki chuckled, watching her little brother disappear around the corner. "He already is."

"Give me a report," said a massive man with a deep, commanding voice. His huge sword rested across his back, the blade almost as imposing as his presence.
A shinobi dressed in black stepped forward, his face hidden behind a mask. "We still don't know the exact location of their relocation, but it's confirmed that Mei Terumi will be returning to her clan this month. She'll be accompanied by a small group of shinobis. The issue is, we're not sure which route they'll take, but we've narrowed it down to three possible paths."
The large man nodded slowly. "Good job."
He shifted his gaze to three shinobis standing behind him, each with a blade strapped to their back. They straightened under his piercing stare.
"You three will take a route each," he instructed. "Bring ten shinobis with you. The operation must be conducted stealthily. No traces. There should be no evidence left behind that could connect their deaths to us."
His calm demeanor made the words even more chilling, but it was the smirk that followed that made the room tense.
"It's Mizukage's order," he added, his smirk widening into a cruel grin. "So you know exactly what failure means."
The three shinobis didn't hesitate. They bowed their heads briefly before disappearing in a blur, leaving the massive man alone with his thoughts.
"Mei Terumi…" he muttered to himself, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "Let's see how you survive this."

The sun was barely peeking over the horizon, its weak rays casting a faint glow over the valley. Kaoru stood near the outpost entrance, shifting excitedly from foot to foot. His small backpack was slung over his shoulder, and he had packed a few scrolls to keep himself occupied on the long journey. He had recently picked up the Earth Wall technique and planned to master it during their travels.
The trip would take about two weeks one way, which meant nearly a month on the road. For Kaoru, it was the perfect opportunity to train and learn while experiencing life outside the outpost for the first time.
The group was larger than he expected. In addition to Mei and her small entourage, Sugeru and two other Takime genins were also joining the journey. They were led by Gumi, who had been assigned to oversee the youngsters. Akura had made the last-minute decision to send the kids along for practical experience. The mission was deemed safe, so the focus was more on discipline and endurance than danger.
Mei stood at the front, adjusting her cloak as she glanced back at the group. "Alright, we're heading out. Everyone stick together, no wandering off."
Kaoru nodded eagerly, his bright eyes scanning the road ahead. He couldn't hide his excitement—this was his first real adventure outside the outpost, and he was determined to make the most of it.
As Mei took the first step, the rest of the group fell in line behind her.
Kaoru couldn't help but grin. Finally. Freedom.
Some were excited to see their families and friends again. Others, like Kaoru, were thrilled by the prospect of a new experience and the chance to prove themselves.
As they walked, Kaoru pulled out a scroll and started reading. His thoughts were racing.
[Let's see if I can figure this jutsu out before we get there.]
